Desperately needs a second edition.

Like many of the other reviewers I am fascinated by sustainable housing. I was drawn to this technology after a some research online and in the library on earth sheltered homes. I would really love to inhabit an earthship of my own. For now though I've purchased the entire trilogy in the last year and enjoy reading through them.
The problem here is, this series of books was written in the early 1990s, making them 20 years old. In those 20 years Michael Reynolds and his crew have done a lot of tinkering and trial and error, managing to improve the system drastically. These leaps forward are not represented in these books. Some of the techniques enshrined within have been discarded completely as their flaws came to light.
I hope they do update in the future. I'll gladly get another set.
For now, the books have solid information, just be sure to do deeper research.

Amazing Building Method Using Car Tires and Aluminum Cans

These books are way ahead of their time. The author first describes the idea of a self-contained "earthship" -- a home that provides for it's own power, sewage, food and water needs. He then talks about the structure, the ideas behind it, and why it works. The rest of the book is all about how to actually build one. Don't pass this up, once you get the idea in your head, you'll want to build one of your own!

You'll want all the books in this series

I went to Taos and toured some of the "Earth Ship" houses, and they were wonderful. I bought the books there and read them cover to cover (on the way home). These books are full of good, practical, information. If you have access to old tires, empty cans, clay mud, you could build your own house. I haven't done a house yet, but I've done some other interesting projects using these principles.
