Too bad this is out of print.

As others have said, this combines textiles, beading and wire work, but what they haven't said is that the jewelry in this book is emminently wearable. I've seen other books dealing with fiber jewelry, and some stuff is very hard or of questionable design and taste. You can be proud to make the items as gifts or to donate into raffles and auctions. I've been collecting my dos' hair from brushing, and once it's spun, I'll make some of the items with it as mementos.

Fiber work for wire jewelry

My main interest is bead stringing and wire wrapping so I skimmed over this book for about a year. After a closer look, I bought it and wondered why I didn't do it sooner. It melds wire working technique with fiber arts. Basic wire working tools and skills are necessary for Fiber-Wire Beads Jewelry. The book doesn't teach it which is the only drawback but there are other books that do this. All Wired Up by Mark Lareau would be a perfect companion for this book.
The instructions are clear and encouraging. The photos of beads and finished jewelry are inspiring. Another plus is that it requires mimimal equipment and can be made with brass, copper or craft wire instead of the more expensive silver and gold wires.

In 1971 William Kelso happened almost by chance on an archaeological find that would open a new door on the rural history of colonial Tidewater Virginia. Erosion had revealed a brick well shaft in a cliff on the James River; above this was an earthen fort and, a bit farther downriver, the remains of a plantation manor. These would be the first of many intriguing discoveries to be made in the area known as Kingsmill. Though the land's owners agreed to cooperate with, and even fund, an archaeological study of the area, the excavation schedule would have to keep one step ahead of the work on a major residential development. For centuries, time had stood still in Kingsmill; now the clock was suddenly ticking.

'Kingsmill Plantations,' Kelso's first-hand account of a great feat of rescue archaeology, covers a three-year period and the excavation of 15 separate sites. The various properties dated as far back as 1619 -- placing them among the earliest of American settlements -- and continued up through the 18th century. Because the division of labor on the Kingsmill plantations was typical of the era, the settlement could provide an invaluable microcosmic view of colonial Virginia. Meticulous study of the structures and their surroundings -- including faunal analyses and inventories of entire households -- allowed Kelso and his colleagues to construct a remarkably detailed picture of life in Kingsmill over the course of nearly 200 years.

At once scholarly and highly readable, 'Kingsmill Plantations' speaks to both expert and amateur. An extensive collection of illustrations -- including maps, diagrams, and contemporary and archival photographs -- makes the narrative especially vivid.

Great book, but for a narrow audience of readers

While detailed enough for advanced achaeologists to study and appreciate, these works are interesting for those like myself who simply want to learn more about life in this early era of history, in this unique area of early settlement. Academic, yes, but highly readable (and enjoyable) by those of us having more of an interest in early American history than perhaps the science of archaeology.

Anyone interested in colonial history will enjoy and learn from this book.

Charming introduction to scones

As I plan to review four of Ms. Romsey's cookbooks, I think it best to cover the major issue I have with all of them right at the beginning: Measurements and ingredient names. For the British marketplace, it's not a problem. British cooks will understand things like cornflour and caster sugar; Americans will have to look them up. Volumes can be a problem. British cooks will know that the pints of liquid referred to are Imperial pints. Americans will have to do some stepping to come up with the equivalent measurements for some ingredients. (For the record, an Imperial pint is roughly 20 liquid oz. Thus 1/4 of a pint will be about 5 oz in the UK, not 4 as it is here in the US.) Ingredients listed by weight are simpler, and any cook who routinely uses a scale for baking will have no problems with these. However I think that it would have been an enormous help to all cooks if the measurements had been converted to metric.

The other issue I have, and I don't think this is necessarily a problem with Ms. Romsey's formatting, is that pages will sometimes repeat on my Kindle. I'll go through the first page of a recipe, turn the page and find most of the information repeated on the next page. I don't know what causes this issue, but be aware of it as you work. It can be confusing if you're in the middle of a recipe.

All that said, I must say I like this cookbook tremendously. Scones have always been an occasional treat for me, and now I have a handy and simple guide to making them for myself. Romsey begins with recipes for basic scones, then provides a number of variations for both sweet and savory varieties. The cheddar and chive scones sound most delicious as do the walnut and raisin ones.

Apart from the issues outlined above, the recipes are simple, easy to follow and should allow even timid cooks to bake up delicious scones with ease. I'm very pleased to add this cookbook to my collection and hope Jane Romsey will choose to share more of her favorite recipes with readers.

Self rising Flour Cannot Be Substituted for All Purpose Without Adjusting the Recipe

If you know what you are doing when baking, this seems to be a pretty good scone primer. I love real scones-- not the scone/cookie pastries that became popular in the US back in the 80's and still hang around in a few places.

However, the thing that really puzzled me was the author included "8 oz. self rising flour/ all purpose flour" in each of the 14 recipes. Self rising flour is simply four that has a leavening agent such as baking powder already added during the packing process. Salt is also added.

So if you want to make a scone using self-rising flour then you leave out the baking power and the salt recommended in the recipe. If you want to use all purpose flour then you add the baking powder and the salt. In fact it's possible to make your own self-rising flour by simply adding about 1/8 tsp of salt and a tsp of baking powders to a cup of all purpose flour and sift it together thoroughly.

Clearly the author should have explained this somewhere in the introduction or in each recipe. I gave it two stars because the error appeared in every single recipe.

Repeated recipes

These are good recipes and easy to make. I don't like weighing flour, however, and prefer to have the measurement in cups. Also, several of the recipes repeat the instructions making it appear as though there is more to the recipe than there actually is. For a novice like my granddaughters this was very confusing.

About the Author
Dr. Ir. Anton A. Kiss has a PhD degree in chemical engineering and around 15 years of academic research and education experience, supported by 5 years of industrial research experience in the area of distillation and integrated chemical processes. Currently, he works as project leader and senior researcher in Separation Technology at AkzoNobel Research, Development & Innovation, Deventer, The Netherlands, acting as the key expert in distillation, reactive-separations, and other integrated processes. In his capacity as an award-winning researcher in separation technologies – particularly in distillation – Dr Kiss has given many lectures at universities and conferences and has carried out more than 100 research & industrial projects. He has also supervised numerous graduation projects, and has published several textbooks and more than 50 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.

It is a good book on the advanced subjects. It ties together many detailed subjects that appear in various published articles. There does not seem to be any comparable book that covers the breadth and depth of these advanced topics.

The Wiley AP English Language & Composition is an excellent test-prep guide ...

If you are a high school junior or senior in the Advanced Placement (AP) and will be sitting for the AP English Language & Composition exam, you'll want to maximize your chance for success. You may know your stuff, or think you do, but the real test of your knowledge is the exam itself. Let's face it, not everyone is a good test taker and the AP exams can cut the wheat from the chaff. The two-part exam is comprised of two sections, multiple choice and free response. The first part is a one hour exam that counts as 45% and the second is two hours (Free-Response, three essays, plus a mandatory 15-minute reading period) and counts as 55% of your score. Perhaps you are confident of your ability to ace the essays, but what about that multiple choice? On the other hand, perhaps you're more confident of acing that multiple choice section.

In this book you'll find be able to review the types of questions, both essay and multiple choice, check out some examples, and check out some tips that might help you out as you prepare for the exam. The pages of this text are peppered with tips and examples to work with. In the back of the book is a very thorough index you can work with, something I always appreciate when I want to either browse or look up something specific. Each chapter is prefaced by a list of Key Concepts that will be covered. There is a brief overview of the main theme and then an introduction of what to expect on the exam. One thing that is very important is how your essays are scored. For example they will be looking at things such as how clear your point of view was, the evidence, analysis and writing. You'll get to take a look at how they come up with your score.

Obviously you'll be interested in those two practice tests, but the bulk of this work is review, something that you really should pay attention to. In the appendixes there are the answer sheets and quite a bit of analysis for you to take a look at and think about. I wouldn't recommend picking this book up at the last minute, but working with a one year time frame in mind before the exam would be ideal. The book is thorough, very comprehensive, and will definitely help anyone preparing for the AP English Language & Composition exam. There are several resources out there and if you have the time, nothing says you can't use more than one.

Helpful for those that are already familiar with writing conventions

It is definitely hard to write a book that attempts to prepare someone for the AP English language test, probably because it's nearly impossible to cover all the elements of English prose style in a book, and, to include at the same time, pointers on test-taking strategies, the tasks required of the test-taker for the various elements of the test, and advice on such general test-taking skills as time management, taking notes, and reading strategies. In fact, I would say that such a book would be a small part of preparation for AP English. Or think of it this way: how long does it take for anyone to recognize the various elements of English prose style? Even professional writers undergo an "apprenticeship" that may take years.

Given this inherent problem, this is as good a book as could be developed for its purpose. I'll assume that someone that is taking the AP English test is also someone that has had a close 'relationship' with writing for many years, and for this type of student, the book may serve as a review. To master an understanding of everything for 'metonymy' to diction to the various forms of prose rhetoric is beyond the capability of any book.

However, the book does have deficiencies, and since the goal of the book is such an ambitious one, the deficiencies are all the more significant. Here's a few: the prose style of the author is often awkward and some explanations aren't even accurate: "Syntax, the way words are put together grammatically." Huh? What does that mean? Or consider the section on the author's attitude: "what the author believes or feels." I think that explanation would confuse most people. I'd have used the term "value position." It's much easier to grasp and more specific than the author's term. Or diction: "diction clues you in to subtleties of meaning, the author's purpose, and a host of other things." That explanation has practically no meaning at all, and is counterproductive to teaching writing style.

I think there should have been a lot more examples of perhaps one or two sentences. The author chooses longer passages as examples. The trouble with this approach is that learning what to 'look for' in writing is a process of accretion, just like learning most any subject.

Otherwise, the book is pretty good. But English education isn't like learning math. The ideas and examples have to marinate a long time in the learner's brain.

The AP English Language and Composition test is meant to certify that the student has some mastery of the English language and is worth a few college credits if you do well. The test itself is composed of a series of (some say) difficult multiple choice questions that must be completed in one hour and a series of essay questions which must be done in two hours. This is not a lot of time so good preparation is very necessary.

My High School junior kid has read a few prep books and told me that this one is not the best but not the worst either, so it's somewhere in the middle.

The information is standard compared to other AP test books, which is not to say it is useless but other books appear to be better at covering and explaining the subject matter. The book comes with practice questions and two full practice tests, but do not get too hung up on the practice tests because it is likely the real thing will be very different :).

The AP test changes year to year so having updated information helps a lot. Wiley's is a pretty good value considering the information contained and the test practice opportunities it offers but my kid is telling me that it wouldn't be his first choice for the AP English test practice.

Best picture dictionary

I hear that this book is no longer in print, which is a real shame, as it is one of the best picture dictionaries for adults out there. I think they should continue to produce it. ALL my adult language learners have LOVED it and I see them use it in class and talk about using it out of class. The illustrations are just, accurate, and also made for adults instead of kids so for those still in Level's 1 or beginning English levels it just can't be beat.

This book has been a great help to my ESL students. It presents pictures and words from many areas that my students need to learn. Its colorful pictures are nicely drawn and thus are pleasant to work with. It sometimes offers more than the basics--for example the category "colors"-- contains not just "green," but various names for the shades of green (teal, lime green, olive green).

I Highly recommend this book. It is great for low, mid and high beginners. I used it for regular classes and ESL civics. I bought several used picture dictionaries for my students. All the books arrived in a week and in excellent condition!!! They look as if they were new!!! for 1/3 of the price!!! Excellent product and service from several sellers!!
