Another excellent, 174 pages of "The Simpsons." Some of these comics are better than their later episodes. This book includes appearances by some less frequent characters like Doctor Nick, Homer's former psychotic boss Hank Scorpio, Luann Van Houten's boyfriend Pyro, Dr. Colossus, and even Waylon Smithers's favorite 8 1/2-incher...Malibu Stacy!

"Judge Marge"--Marge becomes a T.V. judge and her frequent absence causes her household to fall apart. I like the part where Lisa goes on a power trip after she starts wearing a monocle.
"Stacy's Busy Day!"--A comic short for Malibu Stacy! I love it! Let's have more of these! Malibu Stacy shows off some of her many careers and identities (my favorites are "KISS Army Stacy" and "Cosmetic Surgery Stacy"). There are also fan letters, one from a fan who Stacy thinks is a "sharp-eyed little girl" with "an unusual and charming name," Waylon Smithers.
"Viva Bart"--In a Duff Beer contest, Homer wins two weeks in Bosqueverde--a tropical paradise that has been in a state of perpetual civil war for the past thirty years.
"Beauty School Hellcats"--After Selma makes an effort to make DMV customers actually look good in their driver's license photos, she and Patty are given a vacation to beauty school to get rid of her creative impulses.

"Cruisin' for a Bruisin'"--After ruining his and Marge's cruise by giving booze to a recovering alcoholic dolphin, Homer takes Mr. Burns's discarded yacht to start his own cruise line, with some familiar Springfield couples as guests. Hank Scorpio appears at the end in a strip unrelated to this story (he's not one of my favorite characters).
"Crime Family Practice"--Short comic featuring Dr. Nick who is kidnapped to give medical treatment to the mob.
"Growing Pains"--Bart gets involved in a seed-selling scam, so The Simpsons put on a Seed Fair which includes a fashion report by Joan Rivers and her daughter. However, Mr. Burns, who's allergic to growing things (makes sense), may have the last say.
"The Abominable Dr. Colossus"--Dr. Colossus fans will like this book because he also appears in "Judge Marge." In this short, despite attempts at being evil and menacing, Dr. Colossus is seen as a lovable buffoon in Springfield.

"Merchants of Vengeance"--A wave of shoplifting plagues Springfield and shopkeepers Ned Flanders, Apu, and the comic Book Guy ban together to fight it. Comic Book Guy loves the crime-fighting group so much, he can't let it go even when the shoplifting stops. Comic Book Guy actually shows some emotion tearing up in one box.
"In Burns We Trust"--Mr. Burns takes over Rev. Lovejoy's church in his endless quest for more power. Meanwhile, Ned Flanders looks for a new church.
"How Marge Got Her Curtains Back"--In this short, Marge's curtains go down the garbage disposal and she's having a hard time finding that classic corncob pattern.

Phenomenal personal journey, presents science on music for PTSD

Bill has an incredible story about his own journey with PTSD: music is what healed him. I've had the good fortune of experiencing his music therapy/healing at Harmony Hill Retreat Center in Union, WA, --- it's quite profound and mystical. This book is a great fast read and download on the science of percussion/music for PTSD for anyone that doubts the efficacy or needs evidence to support the use of music as a modality.

While I haven't had the opportunity to try Rhythm Medicine itself reading this book.certainly made me believe that it is something I will explore and possibly use to help alleviate stress in my life. I appreciated the information in this book which tells how we have the power through meditation and rhythm to help heal ourselves. I believe in the power of positive thinking and can see where it also plays a big part in healing.

This was one of the best series I have ever read. I was not happy when I was nearing the end of the story because I did not want it to end. But I was oh so glad I had another story in the series to read. This story was very different from any other series I have ever read. The story was well written without being confusing even though the story line encompassed many other planets and aliens, everything was kept at a level that was easy to follow and remember from story to story. The females are strong females, they are either alpha's from the start of the story or turn into alpha's by the end of the stories. But, I wish there would of been more of the females holding there own in the beginning of each relationship instead of giving in to the men with in a few short pages. I was very upset that the series came to an end but Alien Interludes was a great book that I was able to put questions to rest about what happened to certain characters. This series is a MUST read! AND the Kindle books are FULL books.

Cops and a "bad" girl. Oh yeah!

I really like the Clans of Kalquor, I have read most of them and this one adds something I haven't seen in a while, a heroine that is not as level headed. It is refreshing to see someone with qualities of a real girl without the religious indoctrination, and as always, the kalquorian patience shows. The action is great, felt like I was watching a film.

Not as good as the others.

I usually love this series, this one didn't seem to satisfy me as much as the others.
Something about it just seemed off. Maybe it was Dani, I couldn't seem to quite connect to her as I had to the others.
I finished it but I really had to push myself and I was just going through the motions.Maybe it was my mood,I don't like that I didn't groove on this book, it makes me sad. This was one of my favourite series, this book let it down for me

"An Exciting and Blood-Curdling Biography!"

Do you like horror stories? Well, look no further, this book is for you! This is the biography of the most infamous ghoul and necrophiliac in American history: Edward Gein.

Born to George and Augusta Gein on August 27, 1906, Eddie's sad and pitiful life was doomed from the very beginning. His father was a raging alcoholic who beat him continually, and his mother was an extremely domineering religious fanatic who never showed him any compassion or love whatsoever.

Because of his mother's twisted teachings and beliefs about society: ESPECIALLY on the subject of women, Eddie became introverted, withdrawn and didn't understand how to interact with human beings. He was socially unaccepted and teased throughout his dismal and lonely youth. Even if he did manage to find someone willing to be his friend, his mother wouldn't allow it. Men were "filthy, vile creatures who only thought of sex", and women were wicked, soul snatching abominations. In essence, his mother was the only world he ever knew.

Now, for the good stuff! (And this was my favorite part of the book because it describes in great detail the events leading up to, and the discoveries made after his arrest.)

After she died, Eddie sealed off Augusta's room and made it a shrine. He let the house decay and lived in the most filthiest of conditions. Schechter takes us on a graphic and descriptive stroll through his home where hundreds of mice are running around empty food containers, decaying body parts, and endless amounts of other debris scattered all over the floor. We dine with Eddie and eat pork-and-beans from sawed off skull tops, and afterwards, we enjoy a quiet evening alone reading pulp fiction magazines about cannibals, headhunters and Nazi sadism on a grease soaked mattress.

Eddie robbed graves at night. After digging one up, he would carry the carcass home and cut off the pieces he wanted and cremate the rest in his woodstove.

He killed Mary Hogan and Bernice Wordon because they resembled his mother.
After he killed Bernice Worden, he was arrested for her murder when the authorities found her decapitated corpse hanging upside down from the rafters in his kitchen shed. It had been gutted and dressed out like a deer (You can see the actual crime scene photos of it on the internet.)

Among the most interesting items collected as evidence were the following:

A cane chair with the seat woven from strips of human skin
Lampshades and bracelets made from human skin
A tom-tom with the head fashioned from human flesh
A hunting knife with the sheath made from human skin
A belt fashioned out of female nipples
A shade pull made with a pair of woman's lips
Several masks, faces peeled from their skulls, hanging on his bedroom wall
A shoebox filled with female genitalia
Mary Hogan's head wrapped in a paper bag and tossed in a corner
And the most shocking of all: a "mammary vest"; a female suit sewn from several large pieces of human skin which he would parade around in.

The book includes: media coverage, photos, criminal proceedings, and the sentencing of Eddie Gein to Central State hospital for the Criminally Insane.

Lastly, Ed Gein inspired author Robert Bloch to write "Psycho", which in turn, inspired Alfred Hitchcock to turn it into the cult movie classic. Throughout the years, other 'slice-and-dice' movies, such as, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and the serial killer, "Buffalo Bill", in the ever famous "Silence of the Lambs", have all been based on the true acts of Eddie Gein.

Tactfully written, "Deviant" was every bit of repulsive and shocking as I had hoped it would be... I loved it!

Another Solid Effort by Harold Schechter

I read "Deranged" not too long ago. Although I believe that I've seen Harold Schechter quite a few times on various true-crime television shows -- most likely on the Investigation Discovery (ID) network -- that was my first read from him. I thought that it was a very good effort about the life and crimes of one Albert Fish, and so I decided to give this one a try. Naturally, from my rating, I wasn't disappointed with this one either.

I like how Mr. Schechter tends to choose one word titles for his books: "Deranged," "Deviant," "Fiend," etc. etc. While it doesn't necessarily give you a clue about who the book is about, it tends to describe each of these serial killers in a nutshell. But more than that, I really appreciate the effort that the author obviously puts into research. It seems that he must travel to the area where each of the killers lived, and then spend a lot of time searching microfiche for at least old newspaper information. After all, most of his books are about really old cases, and most of the newspapers from the era of his books still aren't available online. (Periodically, I did a Google search here and there for newspaper articles that he mentions in the book, and even Google couldn't find them.)

At any rate, while it appears that Mr. Schechter is a professor of American literature and pop culture, he comes off to me more as an historian. Maybe that was his minor? Maybe it's more of a hobby? Either way, he seems to be fairly knowledgeable about history as well.

I'm nearly finished with "Deviant," and about the only thing that I didn't necessarily like about it was how the author called Ed Gein a "little man." Over and over. Personally, I just thought that it was an unnecessary ad hominem. Taking a peek around the web, I guess that Mr. Gein was around 5 foot 7, so I guess that he was a "little man," but I'm not convinced that it added to the story. Perhaps the motivation for this was to remind the reader that even someone diminutive in stature can be bigger than life as a killer?

It is interesting how this story unfolds, and while reading, I'm not exactly convinced that Mr. Gein was your standard "evil" guy. He seems to me to be more of an enigma, at least from a serial killer perspective. It really isn't clear if he himself even understood the nature of his crimes; to him, it was as if there was no difference between field dressing a deer and field dressing a human. (I'm quite convinced that many people throughout history have attempted to argue this position, and while I believe that it's a good argument to have from an academic perspective, it might be a tricky one to win. If I were to argue against it, I would start by saying that most species do not condone the killing of their own kind, but it surely doesn't always hold. I believe that many monkey species kill their own, as an example. At any rate, I would like to read a valid and sound argument against it, as these types of arguments usually devolve into "appeals to emotion" -- or perhaps more likely "circular reasoning", or something like, "it's bad because it's bad," which I've heard one too many times in my life -- which are obviously invalid immediately.)

While my favorite true-crime author is probably Jack Olsen, he hasn't been with us for over a decade now, and unfortunately, most of his books are not available on Kindle. And I hate buying "real" books anymore; I far prefer e-books. Luckily for us, it appears that most of Mr. Schechter's books are available on Kindle, and I have quite a few left to go. It should keep me busy for a while, and I'd recommend that you'd consider reading them as well.

Morbid Fascination

Had this book been published today, rather than in 1989, it would have contained much more detail than it does. And it likely would have contained more (speculative?) content about Ed Gein's psychology. Taken as the product of its time, however, it's a fascinating read about an even more fascinating character. It's hard to imagine the deranged schizophrenic who inspired Psycho as a sympathetic figure. But it's one of Harold Schechter's authorial gifts that he manages to make Ed Gein as sadly sympathetic as he is monstrous.

One of my college professors opined that what made Victor Frankenstein's creature a monster in our imaginations is the fact that he has no — and will never have any — human connections. With the exception of his cruelly overbearing mother, who may, indeed, have been Victor to Ed's monster, Ed Gein had no meaningful human connections. That he sought such connections in the grisly way he did, can only make us wonder at our human nature, at the definition of "evil", at our capacities to stun and horrify.

Deviant is a highly worthwhile read.

Es un repaso de lecciones que le ha dado la vida, porque como ella dice en su introducción cuando en verdad sabes algo resiste el paso del tiempo o dicho de otra forma la verdad es eterna e inmutable.

Concise, hilarious, insightful and real!

Agile is a breath of fresh air in a sea of "How to do [lofty lifetime goal] with hardly any [insert verb or noun] guides you see everywhere, that are expensive and way longer than they need to be. Sasha has distilled the ideas that most authors would spread over 300 pages into a powerful little gem you can read in one sitting.

Ideal for the chronic procrastinator, Sasha encourages readers to reflect on their true motivations, and break even small goals into bite-sized individual actions or "sprints".

Even the length of the book is perfect for the short attention span... I read (and finished!) this book in just over half an hour, which is a great example of the "sprint" Sasha encourages to begin the journey to any big goal. I work in a high volume, stressful sales career where bigger and better results are always expected, yet I am often overwhelmed by even small changes to my busy routine and yearly goal setting. The set goal + sprint + get support + celebrate "getting there" formula keeps me on track.

Filled with genuine moments of humor, stories of personal challenge, and encouragement to do what we can for the right reasons, I highly, highly recommended Agile for anyone who spends more time dreaming than doing, who starts more than she finishes, and who truly desires big change--one moment at a time.

Creatively Finishing what you set out to accomplish!

If your nickname is "Im gonna" never really finishing anything or sticking with anything long enough to reach the kind of success you desire then this will speak to your soul. Personally I could never get a grasp on the whole Tony Robbins “massive action” thing. The truth was I wasn’t really clear on what "massive action" was nor about what I wanted or why I wanted what I wanted so I was kind of wishy washy on it all. Reading this book was a revelation. Connecting the dots. Understanding the process, the truth of it, and being able to see how my thought patterns affected my ability to act with focus and get through the challenge moments to find true success. A perfect checklist to achieving your personal legend.

Agile encourages this very thing...Start! Don't wait for perfect. Don't wait to discover the best way to start a business, get a promotion, etc. Define a measurable goal and follow with some sprints to the finish line. Practical. Actionable. Get your copy and see you at the finish line.
