Completely disappointing

I bought this book for a recent trip to Spain, only to discover that it DOES NOT COVER entire regions, such as the region where I was traveling, Asturias. (I think it mentioned one or two cities in Asturias). I guess the editors decided which parts of Spain were worth covering, and simply left out the rest.

It was dead weight in my suitcase.

Pretty photos and some useful tips but it should be called, "highlights of Spain" or something like that. It is NOT a comprehensive guide.

A Nice Saga

They meet in 1939 Liverpool. Mary and Hester could be more different. Mary is the only girl in a family of boys and loved by all. Hester an only child of Laura and Roddy. After meeting Queenie Tate a young girl who has been left on her own by her good time mother. War comes and the girls are evacuated but some awful happen that will change them forever. The coming years will see many changes but they will always be together.
"Queen of the Mersey" by Maureen Lee is okay book but be prepared for a long book. I have to admit that I enjoyed the part the book that was set during the war. But overall "Queen of the Mersey" is a nice family saga.

Offers much but much is missing, sadly

As someone from Liverpool, or as good as, rather ironically I suppose, I have always shied away from such yarns concerning the likes of 'Old Ma Brannigan and her brood, all living in a one room flat down by the docks' sort of offering. But this book came my way by accident and so I duly read it. I did enjoy it, but it wasn't problem free, for me anyway.

At the start of the tale, set in Bootle just before the outbreak of war in 1939, the readers are introduced to the Monaghan clan consisting of many sons and 1 baby daughter, a posh couple from down south, moving away from angry families, and a horror of a mother who beats and belittles her young daughter - father nowhere to be seen.

To cut a (very) long story short, all these families come together due to both an urgent need for a child minder and the abused daughter finding herself totally abandoned by her mother who has gone off with a scouse spiv to the bright lights of London. From this time on, the entire lives of several of these characters are permanently intertwined, we see the war break out, evacuation for the kids, the matriarch of the Monaghan clan, one Vera Monaghan, become, along with her abode, a focal point for many characters and situations. We also see the trials and many tribulations of the posh southern couple - Laura and Ralph Oliver.

But here's the problem with it, in my opinion. The author made it a saga centering on three different eras; that sounds great, but there's huge gaps in between, and it makes one wonder 'Why?'.

I won't say much more on the tale as I believe this book has gained a new and highly successful life in this Kindle version, but while the Monaghans seem to be eternally working class and proud of it, others move on in life, markedly so in one case.

I feel that there was enough of a framework for an extended war-time era tale on its own, but by not expanding on this aspect, much seems lost / potentials not reached, and all in all I found it a disappointing read.

Will I give this lady's other Kindle books a go? Maybe, but only after trying to discern what's what re the tale, the bare bones of it sort of thing, especially the era or eras it covers.

When my son was born with brain damage this book was given to me (an original copy) and I bought this for my own library after I had read the original. Very in depth and helped me get my mind and perception of my son on a positive path. I learned many little things that are actually big things in helping my son's development.

Just re-read it again.
This book is about T. T. Liang and his two top students.
The stories are wonderful and always make me smile.
This book also holds a wonderful secret for many in the middle
on how to improve and refine what ever style of T'ai Chi they enjoy.
A must read.

Nice Personal story , no technical instruction

Nice Personal story , no technical instruction.
Tachi is overrated, I have traveled around China, trying to learn martial art, even lived on Wudang mountain to practice for 7 months.
I got my first glimpse of real martial art in a park in Guangzhou, when a kind teacher taught me, without even telling me the name of his art.
A year later, I found out that what he taught me was Yiquan, and I have practiced Yiquan ever since

An inimitable personality and master

First I wanted to make a brief comment on the one very negative review, which said Olson's book wasn't even well written. Come on, it's perfectly competent writing and well edited. I know because I spent 7 years working as an editor and writer in the publishing field, and the book is just fine as far as the quality of the writing and editing goes. Olson isn't a professional journalist as far as I know, and the book could have been written by a professional. The book is also from a reputable publisher, and they know how to bring the writing up to a professional standard if the original writer himself isn't capable of that. (I know, because I did that kind of writing and editing myself, too).

In fact, I found sifu Olson's bio of Liang quite well written and immensely entertaining, for master Liang often has a wit and sense of humor that is as subtle but irrepressible as his tai chi. The life and times of master Liang, his personality, and his philosophy emerge through numerous anecdotes, personal observations, stories, and notes that Olson took in his many discussions with Liang over the years. There is also a good deal of important tai chi history and lineage here that is worth knowing, discussing the contributions of various other masters, such as Yang Cheng Fu and Chang San Feng, and many others.

If you are already a knowledgeable or senior practitioner there might not be much here in the way of new information on how to do tai chi, but if you're a beginner to intermediate student, there is much good information and material here to further your knowledge. But Liang's life story and his amazing adventures and his inimitable personality are the main attractions of this book. Also, his personal philosophy is worth considering too. If the world followed his principles we would be better off and the world would be a far less violent and more peaceful place. But humans are humans, and so they would rather hate and kill each other than follow tai chi's taoist principles and live in peace.

There was one extremely interesting thing about tai chi in the book that I have to mention, though, about when Liang went to visit a reclusive master on a mountain, who was reluctant to discuss his tai chi. He said that all the aphorisms of the great masters about how to do tai chi are merely tricks to get you to do it correctly. For example, the statement that one must allow all one's weight and energy to sink into the "bubbling well" or kidney point on the bottom of the foot. The master said that it just isn't the upper body that is yin and the lower body yang, but that all power must come from the foot. In other words, it isn't that half of the body is yin and half of the body is yang, it's more like 95% is yin and only 5% is yang. Then he showed Liang the difference between doing "wood" tai chi and "cotton" tai chi. This was a fascinating encounter and perhaps the most telling in the whole book.

One other thing I found intriguing was when Liang had to go into the hospital at age 85 for some tests. The doctor said that his internal organs, unlike most 80 year-olds, had not shrunk or atrophied somewhat as is typical of the elderly. The doctor attributed that to the increased blood flow to the internal organs from his lifelong practice of tai chi. If true, then this is yet one more reason to practice tai chi.

Bourgois' approach to his research makes a lot of sense to me since I was taught (as a would-be historian) to take into account all backgrounds and prejudices of the author, the reader, and the characters (if applicable). Perhaps something that makes the read so easy is that the author so willingly points out his own thoughts and biases. This is not to say that our job as readers becomes only to sit back and enjoy the story, but it makes it easier to filter through the author's analyses in order to modify the conclusion for yourself. Importantly, he liberally uses transcriptions of actual dialogues with the East Harlem crack dealers whom he befriends over three-plus years. Having that kind of access to the source of his research is invaluable in judging the situation for yourself.
As for the content, I can think of no better way for me to get a glimpse into that kind of life and neighborhood. One of the only other books that comes close is an autobiography by Nathan McCall called Makes Me Wanna Holler. This book covers his experience going from a gang member in the 1970's to "goin' legit" as a journalist and often revisiting the demons of his past.
Because the author discusses the idea of objectivity and various definitions of it, I want to mention one movie for anyone interested in better understanding how biases affect otherwise factual accounts. Courage Under Fire is a good example of understanding how various views, motives, and biases color different people's accounts. As much as we would like it, we can never practically obtain the kind of completely unbiased, third-person view of a situation as we are given at the end of the movie, but, with practice, you can come close. This is not to say that you should be completely detached from what you read or see, but that you don't have to get bogged down in the views of others.

So compelling. So inspiring. So poignant. I'm so glad I read this book! How beautifully Bourgois is able to convey the issues of poor, inner-city members who give into temptation in order to do what they feel necessary for sufficient income and for basic human dignity. Few books have been able to articulate these arguments with such grace. Highly recommended to those who wish to better understand their brothers and sisters with whom it can otherwise be a challenge to relate!

This is like an anthropologists memoire. If I had known that I might not have started reading. Boy and I glad I did. It is a fascinating account of Puerto Ricans in NY city in the crack epidemic, their lives, their culture and their sorrows.

A Deceptively Simple Guide - Very Helpful Hints

It seems these days there are two kinds of "How To Draw" books - those aimed at aspiring comic book artists, and those aimed at aspiring fantasy artists. As a hobby artist who has taught myself, I've bought plenty of both, and found what they teach to be, basically, interchangeable - what you learn in either kind of book you can apply to your artwork no matter your genre. The real question is: is what the book offers useful? In the case of the Fantasy Artist's Figure Drawing Bible, I would have to offer a qualified "Yes."

This small book, first of all, is aimed at those who are trying to be fantasy artists and who want to work in color - either in digital or traditional techniques. There is no in-depth exploration of anatomy, etc. This book is really focused on "character" - and this is its main failing. At first glance this is really just a "gallery" book, showcasing artistic renditions of different fantasy archetypes: amazons, paladins, wizards, barbarians, enchantresses, vampires, orcs, trolls, demons, giants, etc. For each character it offers a fully-rendered image, a black and white line image for tracing or scanning, and a discussion of the character's personality, costume, pose, etc. This is about 75-80% of the book, and isn't especially helpful, though nice to look at.

Where the book really shines is in its little "tips and tricks" that are provided for each character. Here, you will find invaluable tips on how to render armor, fur, wood, cloth, skin, and stone, among others; tips on how to "ground" a figure; tips on how to add atmosphere, and so on. For those of us who have spent so much time on the figure and little to no real time considering "Oh, yeah - I can't just have them float in space in the drawing" this is tremendously helpful, and is worth the cost of the book.

There are other bonuses, as well - the first part of the book is taken up in a rendering tutorial, going step-by-step through the process of an illustration, form concept to final product. This will be helpful to anyone who has no clue as to how to proceed. The book is also sturdily made and has a very nice, protected spiral binding, so that it will lie flat (something other art books should really consider). What really would have made this book special would have been a DVD-ROM, which is common practice with many art "how to" books these days, with tutorials and files to practice on.

For all this, the book is really not meant to be used alone; it is the merest starting point (although a good one). If you are interested in computer coloring, the best books to start out with and learn the fundamentals are:

1. Hi-Fi Color For Comics: Digital Techniques for Professional Results

2. How To Color For Comics

While these are comics-oriented books, they will help you learn the rudiments that will make much of what is taught in this book make sense.

Concise, Clear Basics

I was a fan of Matt Dixon's work, so I bought this book as a bridge from the standard art technique texts I own to working towards a Fantasy-style.

This book is well-organized with a concise overview of drawing and coloring techniques, followed by a large gallery of Fantasy characters and creatures. You'd probably want a couple more books that would fill out the sections of art technique with more info, but this one is a fine place to start and will give you plenty to work on by itself.

The character gallery is very complete. It gives you a thorough look at 30-40 archetypes of characters from Fantasy. Each has a complete work-up with a finished painting, line art for copying, initial sketches, and alternate faces and accessories.

Overall, it's quite clear , friendly, and much, much better than many of the other "How-to-Draw Fantasy [fill-in-the-blank]" books. Oh...and I appreciated the covered ring-binding that allows it to lay flat.

Okay, so I was a little skeptical of this book at first. It has great reviews online, but I've purchased books in the past with the same types of reviews that fell flat. This is a how-to book, but not just a smattering of instructions with a bunch of pictures to study or a half dozen characters with a small handful of steps. This is about as complete as you cancel get if you are wanting to draw or paint fantasy characters. Basic how-to at the beginning, followed up by at least two dozen examples afterwards. Face choices, positions, clothing options, and the introduction of more advanced techniques as you read fill this book with a wealth of knowledge for anybody who needs help drawing people better.
