Timothy R. Pauketat is Associate Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His publications include The Archaeology of Traditions (2001), Cahokia: Domination and Ideology in the Mississippian World (with T. Emerson, 1997) and The Ascent of Chiefs (1994).

Missippian Culture for the General Reader

The author has both excavated and written profusely on the Missippian Culture, centered in Cahokia to the East of Saint Louis, and the builders of the largest pyramids in North America. The culture flourished in the later Medieval times, just before the white men came to North America. Cahokia should be a famous as Chichen Itza and Tikal--this book is a superb introduction to the culture and to the scholarly discputes about its origins and acheivements.

Every well educated American should be familiar with Missippian culture. Read this book!

A history of the Mississippian people.

A very readable and comprehensive history of the endemic peoples of the Mississippi valley. Although Cahokia was the largest site structurally, pains are taken to present cultural development throughout the larger environment in the valley. From the early, less planned and less financed archaeology, through a broad look at these peoples, the text is fact-filled and efficient. This short, but well referenced and indexed book gives a thorough look at the Mississippi valley, from the initial building stages, to the tie in with the far-reaching 2,100 BC dry periods which helped bring about the downfall of Cahokia and endemic groups throughout the central and western areas of America. A must read.

Provacative and engaging account of Cahokia

Pauketat is a bit of a bomb thrower and he lobsquite a few well directed missiles in this work, but they all land to good effect and he gives a very good account of the fluorescence of the Mississippian culture at Cahokia. His argument holds together very well and his genuine passion for the subject keeps it quite engaging. My only real complaint is that the book basically ends with Cahokia, and does not really discuss the Mississippian in the Southeast at all, nor does it have much to say on Cahokia's precursors. I would love to see a volume on either subject that was as passionately, thoroughly, and engagingly written.

In a way this is almost a mirror of Kantner's work on the Anasazi, which is part of the same series, suffers from almost the reverse flaw Ancient Puebloan Southwest (Case Studies in Early Societies), barely discussing the Chacoan period, but illuminates what happened after the end of Chaco.

Highly recommended for those interested in the largest center in the Precolumbian US.

GREAT BOOK

I really enjoyed this book, especially because it has a Cd in the back cover with all the pdf files of pictures and dwg files of CAD drawings for the floor plans of each project.

The only downside is that there is only 2 pictures per project, but on the other hand it does have all the main architects of the Twentieth Century.

Fantastic resource for students

This is a tremendous compendium of guess what--key houses. What's initially impressive are the author's editorial choices. The important, canonical, expected houses are here, (Farnsworth, Villa Savoye, Fallingwater, Aalto, Kahn, Gropius, Eames are represented), but there are many pleasant and welcome surprises, like the Wittgenstein house and the rotating Villa Girasole. Important choices you'd expect to be left out, like the Melnikov house or the Shodhan house, are included, so, along with the CD, which may have some flaws or limitations, nonetheless gives architecture students an amazing archive of case study material at their fingertips. Highly recommended.

Important examples missing | British bias | selections from the end of the 20th century less convincing, over represented.

Interesting but disappointing. Naturally, a book like this is bound to attract controversy and invite others to challenge the choices made. The author describes the book as derived from the artistic canon of 20th century houses, meaning the houses that are the most famous, well known and influential... so it's a worth controversy. Maybe the most valuable aspect of the book is that it shapes a discussion of what should be included in the canon of 20th century architecture. That said, I thought there were too many biases shaping the list that the author should have challenged in his own mind as he developed this book. Hence three stars instead of four.

The biases that seem to be at work here: 1. A British bias...a good number of British houses included would not be selected by an author who was not British or did not have a long list of books on British architecture to his credit. 2. A late 20th century bias...the houses from the end of the century are naturally less convincing and will be very different for any architectural historian writing the same book 100 years from now. 3. A modern architecture bias...as is often said, history is written by the winners and the polemicists of modern architecture enforced a ban on the serious consideration of the non-modern despite the fact that architecture other than modern was what prominent architects were building during the first half of the 20th century. The only exception to this tyranny, in this book, is a house by Lutyens (every modern architects favorite historicist.)

The two obvious omissions from the book that occur to me are the Palais Stoclet, Brussels by Josef Hoffman and the Walter L. Dodge House, Los Angeles by Irving Gill. To me these seem like glaring omissions, but other readers will, no doubt, have their own to offer.

What a great resource!

I've used this book in a past teaching position, and as I prepared to switch positions and move to a new school, I decided to buy a copy for my own personal/professional library. If you are a non-native English speaker who's interested in understanding more elements of British and American culture, this book is not a bad place to start. If you are an ESL/EFL/ELL teacher and you want a resource that will help you simply define certain things and answer some culture-based questions, this can be very useful. It is a very dense book--a lot packed into these pages--and is organized in a dictionary fashion. Many helpful pictures and illustrations, and many helpful inset articles that cover topics like "newspapers" and "weddings" a bit more in-depth.

If you want a beautifully written, lyrical account of one man's journey into sodium nitrite, this book is for you. If you want clear, consistent instructions that you can actually use to cure meat, this book is seriously deficient.

I've cured and smoked bacon twice in the past couple of months. The first time, I followed a recipe that I found by Googling and it came out great. Everywhere I looked, though, I saw references to this book, and how great it is, and I figured I should probably break down and spend the money to get "real" instructions for bacon -- along with everything else contained herein.

Ruhlman makes a point of providing weights (in grams) for everything, which is great. Hey, precision! So, I got out my scale and mixed up his basic dry cure. I read the instructions that say how much dry cure per how much pork belly, then weighed my two pieces of belly and measured out, to the gram, exactly how much cure I needed for each piece. I applied the cure, put the meat into bags, and put it in the refrigerator to let the salts, kosher and pink, do their thing.

The first time I cured bacon, the belly produced a lot of liquid. This time, not so much -- even after a few days. Even though I was aware that every piece of meat is different, and what was happening could be totally normal, I started to worry that I had messed something up. I went back to the recipe, read it carefully, and realized the extent to which Michael Ruhlman is all over the place.

It's almost as if he's engaging in providing inconsistent curing instructions as performance art, and fancies himself Marina Abramovic. The first thing that I noticed is that he gives two recipes for dry cure. Both use 450 grams (equivalent to one pound, he says) of kosher salt and 56 grams of pink salt. The difference is that one uses 225 grams (equivalent to 8 ounces, he says) of sugar and the other 425 grams (equivalent to 13 ounces, he says) of dextrose.

Let's first take a look at those conversions. It turns out that 450 grams is 15.87 ounces; that's close enough to a pound that I can't imagine that it'll make any difference. So far, so good. The 225 grams / 8 ounces is just this conversion cut in half, so that's fine too. But 425 grams is 14.99 ounces -- which isn't even close to the 13 ounces that he claims. Maybe it's a typo? Maybe it's unbelievably sloppy. The recipe finishes with an estimate of yield: about 725 grams if using sugar (731 using math, so that's okay) and 950 grams if using dextrose (931 using math, which is less okay). The difference between the two recipes is 200 extra grams of dextrose. Why the 225 gram difference in yield?

More egregious is that he says to use 56 grams "of this mixture" per 2.25 kilograms of pork. Well, which mixture? If the most important thing is the nitrite/meat ratio, you have to use different weights of the sugar cure and the dextrose cure to achieve the same ratio for a given piece of meat. Does Ruhlman say which mixture? Nope.

It actually gets worse from there. In the bacon recipe, he writes that "[i]f your belly weighs between 3 and 5 pounds...it's fine to simplify the method by placing the belly in the Ziploc bag, adding 1/4 cup/30 grams of dry cure [Ed: which one??] along with [spices]" and then in literally the NEXT PARAGRAPH writes: "[o]ne 3- to 5-pound...slab pork belly, skin on, Basic Dry Cure...as necessary for dredging (about 1/4 cup/50 grams)." In the space of one paragraph, a quarter cup transforms from 30 grams to 50 grams. Moreover, it says to use this amount for a belly between 3 and 5 pounds; 5 pounds is 67% heavier than 3 pounds, which is, you know, a pretty significant difference. So on one end of the instructions (30 grams / 5 pounds) he's telling us to use 6 grams per pound, and on the other end (50 grams / 3 pounds) it's about 17 grams per pound. Factor in the lack of reference to which version of the dry cure to use, and you could have someone "following the recipe" who uses 3x more nitrites on a slab of bacon than another person, also "following the recipe."

Hey, maybe bacon is really forgiving and it doesn't really matter. But he doesn't actually SAY that anywhere. Instead he gives faux-precise instructions that function as a choose your own bacon adventure. And it does matter, at least according to the FDA. (Why? Because sodium nitrite inhibits botulism, which flourishes in the anaerobic environment found in, say, the smoker you're putting your bacon into.) The recommended level of pink salt is 1 ounce (28.35 grams) per 25 pounds of meat, or 1.134 grams per pound. (Google "how much sodium nitrite per pound of meat".) Ruhlman's sugar cure is 7.66% pink salt by weight and his dextrose cure is 6.02% pink salt by weight. If you use his suggestion of 56 grams of cure (let's go with the sugar cure to be generous) per five pounds of meat, that works out to 0.857 grams of pink salt per pound of meat -- below the FDA's recommendation. With all the other combinations ... forget it, you can figure it out, but trust that they're all messed up.

Wanna have your head explode? A small amount of Googling will lead you to a blog post Ruhlman made on his website in 2011, about a slab of bacon he cured, where he says to use cure equal to 5% of the weight of the meat. So, that's 23 grams per pound of meat -- a ratio way greater than any interpretation of what he wrote in his book. And he's explicit about using the sugar cure in the blog post, which means using 1.76 grams of pink salt per pound of meat -- well above the FDA's recommendation. It's absolutely maddening.

So, my bacon. After a week in the cure it wasn't looking great. Not much liquid had collected, still, and it hadn't firmed up the way it was supposed to. I threw in some more salt -- not cure -- and left it in the refrigerator for three more days. It was looking better by the time I put it on the smoker, and when I ate some I didn't die of food poisoning. So, that's the best thing I can say about this book: it didn't get me killed. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I have to say that this book has been a massive disappointment. I plan on continuing to go through it and maybe look into making some of the other recipes, but only with a whole lot of verification. And, like I said, it's written in an engaging style -- but if you actually want to learn reliable information and have solid recipes to follow, I can in no way recommend it.

It's a great book with great recipes.

This is more of like... an actual recipe book for someone who is already into charcuteries, it's not very "newbie friendly" which is okay.

Reason i took off two stars:

1. No pictures. I mean there are some hand drawn illustrations, but with the cover being as food pornish as it was I expected CENTERFOLDS of succulent coppa displayed to motivate me.

2. With curing being such a fine-tune art, with every quarter of a percent affecting the product, it seems like they were pretty lax with the exact % values of their recipes. Similar recipes seem to suggest oversalting one product and undersalting the other (if you do the math), and likewise many people that use the recipes from this book adjust the levels. Not spice levels mind you, but SALT levels. When you have to tweak the SALT level of a salt-curing book's recipe, you know you're in trouble.

I'm a part of a facebook community of charcuterie makers, and almost everyone from there uses the recipes from this book. However, almost all of them have to tweak the recipes to be more accurate. Caveat Emptor.

Warning re Kindle Edition

I paid USD 16.99 for the electronic version of this book. While it is a respected text that deserves the plaudits it receives, the price is larcenous for what one gets in the Kindle edition. It is a very poorly formatted e-book. Using it in the Kindle reader (Mac and iPhone), it is impossible to navigate easily. Though the TOC is formatted as for hyperlinks, the hyperlinks don't seem to work. Refer to the index and it give you a page number - not hyper-linked. But the only option in search is to go to a particular "location" (1-7591.... How useless is that?) Perhaps I need to learn how to configure Kindle settings better -- and will be gladly accept helpful correction. But this is the first time I've encountered this problem in an e-book that costs more than 1-2 dollars.

Some old-timers like me may find the colors a bit jarringly bright ...

This volume is a must-have for any Kirby collector, and a fitting memorial of the last phase of Kirby’s work at Marvel Comics. The Marvel Omnibus hardbound format is something to behold in itself. Slightly larger (and an inch and a half thicker) than the 11” X 7.5” comics it reprints, the result is a magnified reproduction on heavy, glossy paper stock, printed in the full-spectrum color this allows. Some old-timers like me may find the colors a bit jarringly bright and flat compared with the color printing of the original newsprint comics themselves, and occasionally the inking details have been muddied a bit in the translation, but for the most part this is a carefully-composed and admirable job of reproduction on a grand scale.

And grand it is. The Eternals Omnibus Edition weighs in at almost 400 pages and around 10 pounds. One drawback of a format this thick and well-bound is, ironically, that it’s impossible (unless you want to ruin the binding) to view the pages completely flat, as you easily could with any normal comic book – the middle quarter of each two-page spread tends to disappear into the valley of the bound spine.

But these are quibbles. Over 300 pages of vintage Kirby in quality format is nothing to sneeze at. The fact that all 19 issues of The Eternals are included in one volume makes it a remarkable publishing event for Kirby fans by any measure. The signature Kirby flourishes are all here—the lightning-bolt chin-squiggles, the black-dot energy fields, the enormously foreshortened limbs, the uncanny sense of mass, momentum and scale conveyed by his pencil work, in the service of a theme that makes great use of all of them. Inks by Mike Royer and John Verpoorten are as effective as they come. Coloring is uncredited but obviously re-done (and done well) for the full four-color process.

This is a volume that must be read and will be cherished by any Kirby devotee -- and a time capsule of the twilight of an astoundingly creative career.

Excellent sequential art and writing for most of it's run

Jack Kirby's greatest stories deal with the battle between good and evil he is always looking at shades of grey - no one is purely good or pure evil. "The Eternals" continues this examination. At first the sides seem cut and dry: the Eternals are good, the Deviants are evil. But then, as the series progresses, we see that the Deviants are "ugly" to us simply because that is how they evolved. They were driven underground by the Celestials because the Deviants resented being judged by them. Can you not sympathize? - these Celestial aliens give you life, leave you on your own for years of evolution, then return and proclaim that they will watch you and decide whether or not they will wipe you out of existence. The Deviants rebellious response, especially in a country built on revolution, seems reasonable.

The relationship in that series between Kro and Thena is absolutely fascinating - star crossed lovers like Romeo and Juliet, but on a larger scale. At first, we see Kro as a mad general of the Deviants, but through his relationship with Thena we see him as a complex character with a desire to effect change in his people.

Before the Marvel editors ruined the book by insisting that
A) Jack bring it into the Marvel Universe
B) that it have a star (Ikaris)
The series was evolving on many different levels with different storylines that examined the major and minor themes of the book in different ways. This gave the comic a complexity that turned off many readers who could not follow the storyline, but I found it an and epic amazing story that took the comic book form to new heights that very few, if any, have achieved since. It is akin to the Greeks examination of the families involved with the fall of Troy, stories that they told and retold in not only the Iliad and Odyssey but in their tragic plays.

Thena and Kro's story, with the emergence of the outcasts (who display the qualities the Deviants find ugly), show to members of very different societies and cultures, struggling to understand the other. Struggling to find where there is common ground between the two cultures. Their love appears forbidden, but ironically it is the Deviants that are more accepting of Thena then the reverse. Through Thena we see the human side of the Deviants.

The Deviant outcast Karkas is a large, hideous monster, but with a sensitive, noble, giving soul. The Deviant outcast named The Reject, who though beautiful by human standards, has an ugly disposition, is full of anger and hatred as a response to his mistreatment at the hands of the Deviants. Though Karkas has suffered the same treatment, his hideous body holds a greater nobility of character, and though he can have outbursts of violence he exhibits more self-control and intelligence then the beautiful Reject.

The story also followed the the Eternal Ajak, the human Prof. Damian and the Celestial Arishem, cut off from the rest of the world in the Inca pyramids at the seat of the Celestial Judgement - Prof Damian knowing he will spend the rest of his life there since he is not immortal, but he wants to study the Celestials, not to make money, not to earn fame, but for the love of study he is willing to die trapped in the pyramid. It is through him and Ajak that we come to understand the Celestials, and the history of the relationship between the Celestials and the races of the earth.

We also follow his daughter, Margot, a human who knows more about what is going on than the average person, who is befriended by the Eternals Ikaris and Sersey - Margot becomes the bridge between the reader and the immortals. This storyline examining the link between Earth myths and the real beings behind those myths. Kirby also examines the gods fascination with mortals (as in the Greek), through the character Sersey and her friendship with Margot. It is the study of the human need to have a relationship with the divine.

The story also follows the mysterious Celestials themselves as they roam the earth, as well as the actions of the Eternals, the Deviants, and the humans as they struggle to cope with these nearly omnipotent beings. How different countries react to the Celestials - nuclear strikes, espionage, etc. There are even Eternals who wish to kill the Celestials.

The story is ruined (at the insistence of Marvel editors) by a three page "slugfest" with a nuclear powered Hulk robot. What could be more boring, amongst all these cosmic storylines that have at their heart an examination of the human condition, than three issues of slugfest. All the other storylines get dropped. Kirby is then forced to center his story on Ikaris, and the series lost the incredible momentum it had, neither gaining teenage readers unable to understand such a complex story, or keeping the readers who could.

But for the most part, "The Eternals" is a fascinating read, with astounding expressionistic art, with abstract renderings, and amazing double page spreads in every issue. The story delves into the nature of ugliness, the human relation to the divine, the unpredictablity of love, the justifiable rage we humans can feel for the gods. The Eternals exists on a level where a human is faced with an untenable situation - do you rebel against your creator because your creator is ready to kill you, or do you allow yourself to be judged and accept the judgement of your creator? As humans we are constantly coming up against situations beyond our control - do you rage at your creator because you have cancer?

I have read complaints that this story is disjointed - but far from it, the story exists at multiple levels, like many of Phillip K. Dick's novels, there are several interwoven storylines, that make perfect sense. In it's original month-to-month presentation some readers may have found it hard to keep up with, but when you can read it all at once, it makes perfect sense.

It is ironic that people will bash Jack Kirby's dialogue - in an art form that is not known for it's dialogue, that is hard to stomach. Kirby's dialogue is heightened, which fits the concepts and themes he's exploring, as well as the characters. His humor is underplayed. He doesn't use bad puns, banal one liners, or absurd battle patter. There is little male posturing in his dialogue. At the time this was written, no one was writing better dialogue in comics, that's certain.

Kirby's solo work is a treat, it exists in a place of expanded conciousness in both the art and the writing. The expressive power in his pencils is unmatched, and his move to more abstract renderings takes his art out of the realm of the superhero, as he creates a new form altogether. It's a pity he was so ahead of his time, that his publishers didn't know how to market his work, his editors didn't appreciate it, and he was never allowed to complete it.

There is no more comics like this anymore.

Wow, I discovered Kirby for the first time a couple of years ago,

but one can feel his Impact in all media, he practically defined

the qualities of a Hero in modern america.

The Eternals is a great story, other people rate as outdated, but

unfortunately I am not aware of that many titles that can change your

perception of the Worl.

If you want to get more Kirby, buy the New Gods series, Kirby Book

Collector; other interesting titles would be The Ultimates, Supreme

Power.

About the Author
STEVEN O'HARA, Professor of Architectural Engineering and Licensed Engineer Professor O'Hara received his Master of Architectural Engineering from Oklahoma State University, and has been a member of the teaching faculty at the School of Architecture since 1988. His primary areas of interest include the design and analysis of masonry, steel and timber structures, with special interest in classical numerical structural analysis and the design of concrete structures. Professor O'Hara is one of four faculty members in the Architectural Engineering program at OSU, and as such teaches courses in the AE program at all levels; he enjoys his close mentoring relationship with the students in the AE program at OSU, as he also performs the role of their academic advisor. Outside the OSU classroom, Professor O'Hara is an Affiliate Professor of Civil Engineering and Architecture in "Project Lead the Way", a nationwide program for high school students. He trains the high school teachers responsible for introducing engineering principles into the secondary curriculum, though project based learning, and has authored the workbook for the curriculum. As a faculty member, Professor O'Hara has received numerous awards; in 2001 he was the honored recipient of the first Melvin R. Lohmann Professorship, in 1999 he received the Chi Epsilon Excellence in Teaching Award, and in 1995 he was recognized as the Halliburton Excellent Young Teacher for the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology at OSU.

Straightforward and efficient

I found this book to be the best resource for getting my studying started and understanding the scope of all the exams. I also used a few Kaplan guides, which I found to be overkill. For a few of the exams, I used the specific Ballast books, but I only used them because I was able to borrow them for free. They were great as well, but provided more questions and exams than I could have ever found the time or desire to pursue.
If you're preparing to start taking exams, this book is the best resource, and will save you a lot of time. If you think you're weak in a particular area, use this book first, and then consider supplemental information/books from Ballast or Kaplan.
btw, I passed all my exams the first time around.

Consistently good study guide

This is a great study guide- very comprehensive. I've used this as my primary study guide and have been doing well on the ARE. I think it's well written and isn't so dry that it's impossible to get through. I'm giving 4 stars because of some things I didn't like regarding formatting/ information location (that resulted in being unprepared for some questions).

Be sure to review the actual ARE test guidelines from NCARB. The chapters split the subject matter up fairly well, but there are a few where the material is in the wrong section (i.e. Vertical Transportation should be in "Building Systems" chapter, but is in the "BD&CS" chapter).

There are 2 chapters at the very end - Chapters 55 & 56 - Code info- and they should absolutely be the first chapters in the book!!!! They are not and I just realized, 3 tests in, that these chapters exist. It's my fault for not reading the T of C, but I think they're not placed properly. This is critical stuff on most every test and doesn't belong hidden in the back.

OK that is all- would definitely recommend. I went through each chapter and made my own flashcards for review a few days prior to the test. It's a lot of trees, but effective!

In 1880 a young medical student named Arthur Conan Doyle embarked upon the “first real outstanding adventure” of his life, taking a berth as ship’s surgeon on an Arctic whaler, the Hope. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 –1930) was a British physician and writer most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes. He was a prolific writer whose other works include science fiction stories, historical novels, plays, romances, poetry, and nonfiction.

insight into the origins of Doyle's creativity

Although one may sicken slightly (or greatly) at the tally of seals knocked on the head, whales slaughtered, and bears bagged, this diary of a whaler's voyage into Arctic waters reveals the very young Doyle as a fearless, observant, and interesting crew member with a hand for drawing as competent as his gift for writing and recording. Doyle already began to 'contain multitudes' at this early age, and you can see how he was becoming the man who would have Holmes and Watson as avatars--himself more the bluff and hearty man of simple tastes, but harboring within the keener mind and sensibility of the observant connoisseur.

A good read about a by-gone era.

This makes a great gift to a teenager/young adult who is somewhat at loss as to a career. It documents the path of one distinguished individual in making that choice. Besides it is a nice pleasant, fascinating read. As an older man who essentially made his living as an economist and statistician, I was somewhat appalled by the brutal notion of making a livelihood from hunting, but the business as a business is a fiine example of of the way business contracts and risks were undertaking in a by-gone era.

As a book complete with editotial comments, it is a fine piece of scholarship and very intelligent editing. It was an easyread.

Terrific read, terrific presentation....

I bought this as a Christmas gift for a smart, engaging 15 year old whose ambition is to become an Arctic scientist and whose favorite author is Conan Doyle. But I cheated and read it through before I wrapped it. It's a beautiful edition at a more than reasonable price, and it's a rollicking read, as well, as you would expect from even the youthful Conan Doyle--even then a close observer of the world around him and the people who populate it. The recipient was suitably wowed, just as I was.
