Joan MacLeod
Multiple Betty Mitchell, Chalmer’s, Dora and Governor General’s Award-winning author Joan MacLeod grew up in North Vancouver.

Now an internationally celebrated star of the world of the theatre, MacLeod developed her finely honed playwriting skills during seven seasons as playwright-in-residence at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto, and turned her hand to opera with her libretto for The Secret Garden, which won a Dora Award.

In 1991, her play Amigo’s Blue Guitar won the Governor General’s Drama Award.

Buy this book for a beginners guide to live sound mixing!

I love how this book is written- organized, matter-of-fact, and with technical illustrations. It's a great place to start if one is trying to learn how to control a feedback issue in a PA. Also, it comes with a DVD of .mp3s of examples of different things such as, *what* it sounds like to boost the highs at 16khz, or what a "60-cycle hum" sounds like. The examples are very helpful and should not be ignored or not purchased, in the case of a used book. It's worth the book to get the companion DVD. Together they've become valuable tools in my daily work life.

The perfect book for self-taught sound folks looking for more

This book is the shizzle. I am pretty much a self-taught sound person who at this point has way more questions than answers. If, like me, you have a general idea of what sounds good and what sounds nasty, as well as a strong desire to learn more but no resources beyond a circle of other self-taught sound people with vastly different opinions and ideas on how to get good sound, this book is for you. I found Bill Gibson's straightforward, patient, small-word, and helpfully redundant writing style and textbook layout to be spot on and just exactly what I was looking for. Like bringing water to the desert. The best part was that it gave me a conceptual framework to organize what I already know, or thought I knew, and gave me enough information to be comfortable with diving deeper into the minutiae with other resources. More than just a textbook you read cover-to-cover and then never crack again, this has already become a handy resource I refer back to before during and after every gig. And that's BEFORE we get to the accompanying CD! The sound samples were an excellent companion to the text and perfectly illustrated all of the concepts on the book.
My favorite quote: "If you are a sound operator and you never have volume or sound complaints, then you're very good, very well-liked, very diplomatic, or very scary-looking."

Great Book!

I recently took an online course in audio engineering. It was only a 3 month online course, so obviously a bit limited in what was covered. however, it did cover a lot of areas. I got this book because I wanted to learn even more. I have always believed that if you really want to learn something well, no matter what the subject matter, you should try to learn from multiple sources. This book is actually a great extension for the course I had taken. It even covers a lot of the material my course did.

I purchased this from amazon for $26 but the cover price is actually $39. Great deal! Lots of great illustrations for the purpose of driving various concepts home. I highly recommend it for any musician looking to either improve his live sound or produce quality home studio recordings.

Had potential but just fell short for me

It's not easy for me to write a negative review. As a creative in a different arena, I understand how much goes into expressing yourself in such a public way, you are laying yourself bare for all to see and comment on, and I appreciate the courage that takes. Having said that, we all look for different things in our books and this is just my opinion, which goes against many of the reviews on here.

Firstly, what I liked about this book.
I liked the premise of the story, the way the author wove the main characters stories together. It was set up well, and opened up opportunities for emotional attachment and angst. I also could envisage the setting and atmosphere of the town.I liked the main characters friendship groups and what they added to the story and I can see there is potential for the author to continue this series with their stories.

Sadly, as the story went on I felt bogged down by too much inner dialogue, particularly from the heroine, her 'rules', and her manner, which caused me to disconnect from her as the story progressed. She began to annoy me with her flip flopping of emotions and poor decision making. I felt some of it was there just to create unnecessary angst and ended up making her look weak and immature. I understood how her past had effected her but, in the end I lost interest in her HEA.

Grey, on the other hand, I felt more of a connection to than Avery, but still missed the total connection that I look for. I thought he was open and honest. He showed his vulnerability, even when Avery was not willing to do the same. I had to wonder though, if attraction and lust would be enough to overcome the obstacles they had in the beginning, knowing what they did and what it meant for their budding relationship. I'm not sure I would have pursued a relationship in that situation until the issue between us was somewhat more resolved.

Overall, this book had potential but it just fell short for me. I thought that some of the situations were added or drawn out unnecessarily. Some just took the focus away from their developing relationship and the ability for the reader to form a strong bond with the main characters. The ending felt rushed and Grey forgave Avery far to quickly for my liking. I didn't want him to drag it out, but he did a complete 180 in the space of 5 minutes that I felt was unrealistic. And then the book ended. I would have liked an epilogue. And I would have liked someone to stand up to Avery's overbearing father. It just felt unfinished to me.

This was an interesting twist as far as the plot goes. If anyone, other than the hero, had one ounce of maturity, it might have gone somewhere. But instead we had the hapless brother, the bully father, the invisible mother, the playboy best friend, the repentant ex, the immature best friend, and finally a heroine who blew in the wind. Story was slow, the romance inconceivable and too many annoying sideline characters

Challenges, obstacles and loyalty...

Grey Lowell runs a backcountry skiing expedition company called Backtrax in the San Juan mountains of Colorado. He lives in the small town of Sterling Canyon and loves grape lollipops.

He sees a woman across a room and nicknames her Bambi, little realizing what an impact this woman will have on his life. Right after seeing (and becoming interested in this woman), Grey is hit and injured by a drunk driver.

When he goes in for PT, he finds out that Avery Randall aka Bambi is his occupational physical therapist - and also the sister of the drunk driver.

I liked the locale - the southwestern part of Colorado is one of my favorite places. In fact, we just got back from vacation there so I was really able to visualize the area as I was reading about it.

Grey is almost too good to be true. And Avery definitely has some issues. Questions are raised about give and take in relationships and also about loyalty - to your family and to your significant other.

But I liked the story and the romance. The ending was a bit rushed and I would have like an epilogue for this story. I think it is the first story in a Sterling Canyon series, though, so I imagine there will be more about the pair in future books.

About the Author
Diane Lobsiger is an electrical instructor at Delta College in University Center, Michigan. She instructs students in the Skilled Trades-Electrician program, Wind Turbine Technology program, and Pre-Engineering program. In her prior work as a senior manufacturing controls engineer for 24 years, she gained a wealth of knowledge and extensive experience in the design, troubleshooting, specification writing, and approval of machine controls systems. Her expertise includes relay control systems, programmable logic controllers, human-machine interfaces, servo systems, adjustable frequency drives, and fluid power systems. She earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Auburn University and a Master of Science in electrical engineering from Michigan State University. She recently obtained her Secondary Teaching Certification in mathematics and physics from Saginaw Valley State University. In her free time, she can usually be found fishing at her cabin.

This book has 378 sides where 18 of them are glossary and index. The book is printed unnecessarily with so big font furthermore, easy ladder diagrams often use space of whole side.All the contents of the book would use no more than 160 sides if this book would be printed with an ordinary form as another textbooks.In my point of view author thinks customers are idiots and will not find out tricks that she/he used.Book has some mistakes also.F.exmpl on side 24 example 2 ,formula says 3 x line voltage, it should be the square root of 3 x line voltage. Almost 100$ for this book is realy too much, but book is generally ok.
