About the Author

John C. Bean is an emeritus professor of English at Seattle University, where he held the title of “Consulting Professor of Writing and Assessment.”  He has an undergraduate degree from Stanford (1965) and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington (1972).  He is the author of Engaging Ideas: The Professor’s Guide to Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom, 2nd edition (Jossey-Bass, 2011).  He is also the co-author of three widely-used composition textbooks–Writing Arguments, The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Writing, and Reading Rhetorically.  He has published numerous articles and book chapters on writing in the disciplines as well as on literary subjects.   His current research interests focus on pedagogical strategies for teaching undergraduate research including quantitative literacy, disciplinary methods of inquiry and argument, and the problem of “transfer of learning” as students move through and across a curriculum.  He has delivered lectures and conducted workshops on writing-across-the-curriculum throughout the United States and Canada as well as for universities in Germany, Bangladesh, and Ghana.  In 2010 his article “Messy Problems and Lay Audiences:  Teaching Critical Thinking within the Finance Curriculum” (co-authored with colleagues from finance and economics) won the 2009 McGraw-Hill — Magna Publications Award for the year’s best “scholarly work on teaching and learning.”

Almost like having a partner leave me notes

This book had a lot of writing already done in it, as well as highlighting of course. The cover had a bit of wear and tear but nothing too major. No water damage or anything of the sort. However, for the class I'm taking it doesn't much matter what's already written in, it actually gives me a bit of an upper hand. Almost like having a partner leave me notes. The only problem is that it's going to hard to sell again later because it will be ever MORE USED. If you're on financial aid and you'd like to sell the books later for extra summer cash, then I wouldn't suggest buying anything THIS used, because it will be horrid condition once you're done with it. If you're just looking for a cheap and easy way to get your book then go for this.

Clear, concise, and well motivated.

I have only read the first seventy pages of this book, but so far it is excellent. The character of the book can be likened to Kleene's "Introduction to Metamathematics" or "Mathematical Logic." The subject is well motivated by brief philosophical discussions, but the philosophy is not allowed to interrupt the flow of mathematical development. There are few exercises, but enough for the casual reader to check from time to time that he or she is understanding the material. The exposition itself is perfectly clear and concise, by my lights. Nothing important is skipped--one does not need to fill in the blanks in proofs--yet the book moves at a good pace. The focus of the book is on the development of Category theory in relation to its applications in logic. For this reason it is probably of more interest to a logician or a philosopher than to a computer scientist. Indeed, for the logician who is interested in Category theory this book cannot be missed. To put it bluntly, Goldblatt strikes me as a superior mind, even his brief remarks on set theory were enlightening. The book has been (to this point, at least) a very enjoyable read.

Enjoyable, though not as accessible as the author might hope.

I came to this book with an interest in philosophy of mathematics, formal semantics, and non-classical logics, attracted to the author's stated goals to make category theory and its implications available to both the mathematically and philosophically inclined by requiring very little background in set theory or mathematics. I have a fairly good grasp of first order logic, and know enough set theory to talk about things like Kripke semantics in a general fashion, and I find this book challenging. The author defines things like a limit on a diagram (fairly early in the book) and doesn't make it clear to me what the significance of the concept is supposed to be.

I do still find it full of suggestive and interesting ideas, and the author is clearly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. A general picture does emerge in the less formal discussions at the beginnings of the chapters, so flipping around a little can help you get an idea for the context. But ultimately I think this is still more accessible to graduate level math students, and I'm giving it a four star review because so far as I can tell, it succeeds in its technical aspects, and mainly fails only in reaching its entire stated audience.

Great introduction to the theory of toposes.

When Goldblatt's book first hit the stands, it was blasted by reviewers who had a geometric predilection. They claimed that Goldblatt had trivialized this essentially rich geometric subject by giving a set-theoretic treatment.
I became fascinated with topos theory in the summer of 1989. My only experience with category theory at that time was some dabbling that every graduate student gets in studying modules and in functional analysis. I didn't have much background in algebraic topology where the subject is usually developed considerably further.
Frankly, I found Goldblatt's "gentle" approach to categorical concepts and the concept of a topos very rewarding. I worked through most of the book in a summer, and was fully prepared to take on the more advanced texts at that point. Later, I had the opportunity to teach topos theory at the graduate level to people with backgrounds similar to mine (i.e., without a strong background in category theory). We worked through most of Goldblatt's book in the first semester and I guarantee that all the students were very grateful, as I had been, for Goldblatt's approach to the subject.
The book is well written, accessible to graduate students, filled with fun and often challenging exercises, and packed with references. In my opinion, it is the right place to start if you want to become proficient in topos theory (and you don't already have significant proficiency in category theory).

THIS is the one book to read to understand why the US economy and our freedoms are in decline. This book exposes the Federal Reserve Banking system for the "rape and pillage" system that it is The Fed is a gold mine for the Thieve-steins owning its stock and sitting on its boards.

These criminals have left no stone unturned to retain access to their cash cow -- the Fed. They have used their "Fed Reserve" worthless money to buy ALL mainstream media -- to prevent you from hearing "real news." They have bought almost ALL politicians by selectively funding campaigns, They have infiltrated ALL "defense" institutions and created black programs through which to steal even more dollars. These criminals are prepared to murder anyone to protect their access to their Golden Goose, the Fed. Bill Stills gives the history of this banking theft system. The Fed needs wars to create the debt which taxpayers must then pay off.

Still's book will provide the reader with a thorough educational view of the history of money, the birth of the Federal Reserve bank, and the beginning of the privatization of the United Stated financial and political institutions. This is not a book about conspiracy, but a book about facts and the legitimization process of the elitist power.

Kindle version is a pain

Downloaded the Kindle version and the entire book is plagued with spelling/punctuation errors, along with out of place content. Seems like the book was scanned digitally and made available without anyone checking to see the mess that was made. From what I could read, the book is very interesting with great information but definitely not worth the effort to try and decode the spelling, grammar and misplaced paragraphs.

Leading while respecting personal autonomy might appear impossible upon first glance. However, through case study analyses using history to guide as a lens, Heifetz appropriately condensed multiple concepts of effective yet balanced leadership. Taking into consideration one's own place in society or scope of influence as a leader proves to be a central premise guiding decision-making and action. Published in 1998, one can easily see the concept of "leading from behind" not merely foreshadowed but illustrated in the text. A gift from Heifetz that becomes more relevant as time goes on.

Leading is the process of navigation through complex nuances that often lead to further conflict; and as Heifetz points out "disequilibrium." However, navigating through these may bring community vestment needed for reasonable solutions. The best advice is :"looking from the balcony " and using assessment to chart the way.

Encourage anyone interested in change work to read this book.

Based primarily on the Concerns Based Adoption Model (CBAM), this user-friendly text focuses on introducing constructs that can be used by those engaged in facilitating change processes as well as those who are evaluating and studying change.

 

As before, the major construct that is the topic of each chapter is evidence-based. For this edition, up-to-date citations from research have been inserted with each construct, tool, and application. The findings from important recent research studies are reported, such as the first studies linking Change Facilitator Style of school principals with student test scores.

About the Authors

Gene E. Hall, Ph.D. , School of Environmental and Public Affairs, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has been a full professor at four universities and served as the Dean of the College of Education at two universities. Dr. Hall is internationally recognized for his career-long focus on developing new understandings about the change process in organization settings. He regularly serves as a consultant for schools, school districts, businesses, and state leaders on the implementation of various innovations and change processes from a Concerns-Based perspective. In addition to his work in the United States, he regularly collaborates with colleagues in other countries and serves on doctoral committees in relation to facilitating, evaluating, and studying change processes. His more recent research has examined relationships between Change Facilitator Style of leaders and outcomes such as increases in student learning. Dr. Hall has had a parallel academic career in regard to innovation in and national accreditation of teacher education. He is a co-author of The Foundations of American Education (Pearson) now in its 16th edition, and the lead author of Introduction to Teaching: Making a Difference in Student Learning (SAGE).

 

Shirley M. Hord, Ph.D. was the first Scholar Emerita at the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, and is currently Scholar Laureate, in association with Learning Forward (previously, National Staff Development Council). She authors articles and books on school-based professional development, school change and improvement, and professional learning communities. A sampling of her publications are Implementing Change: Patterns, Principles, and Potholes with Gene Hall; Learning Together, Leading Together: Changing Schools Through Professional Learning Communities, Teachers College Press (2004); with Patricia Roy, Moving NSDC’s Staff Development Standards Into Practice: Innovation Configurations, National Staff Development Council (2003); Leading Professional Learning Communities:Voices from Research and Practice, Corwin Press (2008); and with Edward Tobia, Reclaiming Our Teaching Profession: The Power of Learning in Community, Teachers College Press (2012). In addition to working with educators at all levels across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Dr. Hord serves as an educational consultant worldwide, in Asia, Europe, Australia, and Africa.

Implementing Change: Patterns, Principles, and Potholes (2001) is the latest book on the process of educational change and leadership co-authored by Gene E. Hall and Shirley M. Hord. It describes the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM), a framework they have been developing for use in organizational and educational settings for the past thirty years. Within it they describe how people can and do facilitate change. Leadership today requires the ability to organize and direct human resources for levels of constant change, most recently in educational settings. This book provides educational leaders and change agents with practical tools and advice on how to effectively accomplish their goals. Among them are: innovation configuration mapping techniques, stages of concern surveys and evaluative tools, and levels of use matrices, as well as information on leadership styles and how they affect change.
The format of this book is not only engaging, but entertaining. Chapters begin with quotes in first person narrative, from real/fictitious accounts of people involved in change. The figures and graphics, often using analogies and metaphors for text ideas, add to the clarity and the readability of the book. Case studies and examples are interspersed with humor and credible settings and characters. Focus questions within chapters and discussion questions at the end of the chapter invite further thinking and discussion which makes it an ideal resource for study/focus groups who are dealing with change. Chapter endings also include suggestions for fieldwork activities that provide opportunities for active engagement with the issues being discussed.
While they caution readers not to use this as a recipe book (p. 103) it is difficult to overlook the accommodating and sequential format they use, filled with useful advice and suggestions. Hall and Hord offer practical tools and a unique combination of theory, research and practice for coping with change in organizational structures. With good humor and practical advice this is one of the most readable and useful books ever to help managers and change facilitators navigate through the difficult process of organizational changes.

This book is very practical and offers good insight into the patterns and phases people go through when organizations experience great change. Leaders should read this book before implementing drastic changes in their organizations.
