We're closing in on the 150th anniversary of Darwin's Origin of Species, but clearly not closing in on any resolution of the debates that the book stirred up between science and religion. In this slim volume, physicist and theologian Ian Barbour summarizes his own decades-long accumulation of knowledge in these two arenas. Writing with clarity and a scientist's eye for organization, Barbour takes on the scientific and theological significance of the big questions: the big bang, quantum physics, Darwin and Genesis, human nature (the question of determinism), and the relationship between a free God and a law-bound universe. In each chapter, Barbour recognizes four possible ways of responding to the dilemmas posed by these topics: conflict, represented by Biblical literalists and atheists, both of whom agree that a person cannot believe in both God and evolution; independence, which asserts that "science and religion are strangers who can coexist as long as they keep a safe distance from each other"; dialogue, which invites a conversation between the two fields; and integration, which moves beyond dialogue to explore ways in which the two fields can inform each other. Barbour notes that his own sympathies lie with dialogue and integration.

Barbour won the 1999 Templeton Prize for his role in advancing the study of science and religion. This concise introduction to science-and-religion issues provides impressively well-balanced coverage of an increasingly complex family of topics in a single, accessible volume. When Science Meets Religion is the winner of the Templeton Prize for advancing religious understanding. As a humanist, this topic is always of interest to me, and I found Barbour's view on process theology most interesting. The typology of the book was such that four "topics" were discussed in each chapter with respect to the "view" being discussed: Conflict, Independence, Dialogue, and Integration. So, for instance Astronomy and Creation are "analyzed" from those four points, as are the other major sticking points between science and religion.
Barbour seems to treat each position with respect and objectivity and clearly states his own position so that the reader is not required to "guess" where he is coming from in his own thinking. For example, in chapter five (Genet6ics, Neuroscience, and Human Nature) Barbour states clearly the "I will defend an integral view of the person as a psychosomatic unity, which I believe is closer to both the biblical view and the evidence from contemporary science." And so it goes through all the major topics of the book. And, in the next to the last paragraph, we have this conclusion: "Finally, I find the concepts of process philosophy particularly helpful, but I am aware that a single coherent set of philosophical categories may not do justice to the rich diversity of human experience."
In the end, Barbour has not convinced me to leave off my Humanist views, but he has indeed given me the framework I need to understand the need for others to use a religious model to express their sense of unity with all the Cosmos. As he so eloquently explains, all models are limited and partial, and none gives a complete or adequate picture of reality. So it is just a matter of where you wish to put your faith when it comes to understanding your own place in that infinity. One can put faith in science eventually giving us answers to the major questions we have or one can put faith in religion explaining the mysteries. Whichever system one chooses, one must keep in mind that no one model fulfills all needs or answers all questions.

"Quantum Physics: A Challenge to Our Assumptions about Reality?
Classical physics was deterministic and reductionistic in assuming that the behavior of all objects could be exactly predicted from accurate knowledge of their smallest components. Quantum physics, by contrast, acknowledges an inherent uncertainty in the prediction of events at the atomic and subatomic levels. It is also holistic in showing that the behavior of larger wholes is not simply the sum of the behavior of their parts, but involves distinctive system laws. More over, the quantum world can never be known as it is in itself, but only as it interacts with the observer in a particular experimental system. Quantum physics thus suggests the openness of the future, the inter connectedness of events, and the limitations of human knowledge. Some theistic interpreters propose that God determines the indeterminacies left open by the laws of quantum physics. Advocates of Eastern mysticism say that quantum holism supports their belief in the fundamental unity of all things. Concise, engaging, and informative.

It's not easy to write a clear and compelling book relating science and religion; after all, it requires versatility in two separate fields, each of which tries to grapple with enormous questions. Barbour is able to give the reader just enough background to follow his arguments in such diverse areas as cosmology, neuroscience, and quantum physics. The book is incredibly well organized and commendably brief. The fourfold classification scheme for relating religion and science (conflict, independence, complementarity, integration) is catchy and effective. The one limitation is that (for reasons the author explains) this book does not explore Eastern religions. At no point did I find myself involved in the heavy slog required to work through other books that address similar topics. A wonderfully accessible work by a world class scholar.

This book is one of the best resources to teach high intermediate students. As a teacher, I like the second Edition much more than the third Edition and there is no difference with the 4th Edition so I will keep using this edition until it is whether all sold ou or out of printt. A great resource even if you are teaching a speaking class for those who need to get a little bit better when using structures.

Amazing approach for non-autistic kids too

My son is 5 years old with selective mutism and social anxiety among other things (Tourette's, OCD, SPD, etc). When he is around people he doesn't know very well he won't talk at all but in a comfortable situation (usually with neighbors, relatives, family friends), he won't stop talking. He interrupts, changes topics, and walks away in the middle of the conversation. These are probably all normal 5 year old traits but I know his anxiety feeds into it as well. It also is starting to affect him socially. Our block has a wide range of ages and the kids who are just slightly older than him get kind of annoyed sometimes. This book has been a huge help. It describes the parts of conversation as the parts of a train...perfect for my train lover...and gives us a way to talk about conversation. We'd tried for a long time to explain about not answering what someone else says with an unrelated thought but now we just say, "Oops, you derailed the train," and he stops and responds to what the other person said.

So grateful for books like this!

Great book perfect for kids who are higher functioning on the spectrum. My son loves trains so he really liked the pictures and included work sheets are great. Really helped him relate to the idea of conversation and made it a more enjoyable process.

It's a brilliant example of incorporating children's interests into teaching

This book provides an amazingly helpful analogy between trains and the format of successful conversations for children on the higher-functioning end of Autism Spectrum Disorder. It's a brilliant example of incorporating children's interests into teaching. I've worked with children and adolescents on the spectrum for years and they really engage in activities involving Shaul's Conversation Train. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to help children develop good conversation practices. LOVE it!

About the Author
Sana Loue is Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the Center for Minority Public Health at Case Western Reserve University. She also holds appointments in the Departments of Bioethics, Psychiatry, and Global Health. Loue is the author of more than a dozen books on gender, ethnicity, immigration, and health. Over a two-year period, the author and her research team followed the lives of fifty-three Puerto Rican women living with severe mental illness as they coped with daily challenges in the areas of family, romantic relationships, employment, social services, substance use, and health care. The team interviewed the women and shadowed them at their homes, churches, schools, physicians' offices, family events, and other occasions in order to understand how their mental illness, their gender, their language, and their culture affected their relationships with others, their understandings of their own situations, and their hopes for themselves and their families.
