It's Mark Hayes, so I have to give it 4 stars at least, but I was disappointed

It's my own fault that this item wasn't exactly as I expected. Before I purchase a piano book on Amazon, I always browse music sites first so that I can get a complete song list, sample pages, etc. It's impossible to buy a piano book just by looking at the cover. Unfortunately, on Amazon, most of the times that's all you get. Every other site lists this book as coming with a performance recording by Mark Hayes, so that you can hear his interpretation and then perform the pieces accordingly. The ISBN numbers looked the same and everything, so I assumed I was getting the same book. Also, considering how high the price was on this as compared to the other Mark Hayes books, I also figured it just HAD to include the CD. Well, it doesn't. The markings are in the book (notations of which track #, etc), but there's no CD.

For $2 more, I could've bought this from a music dealer's site and it would've included the CD. For the first time ever, I feel like I got a bad deal from Amazon.

As far as the book itself, I was also a little disappointed. So far I've only found one arrangement I really like--"I'd Rather Have Jesus." Maybe the rest will grow on me. It's unusual, because my Mark Hayes books are my go-to arrangements. Volume 1 is dog-eared from use. Volume 2 looks more like it will be pushed to the bottom of the pile.

Mark Hayes arrangements

It was much more challenging than I had anticipated, especially compared to some of his other books I purchased. I would call it a Volume 2 1/2 or 3, but I did not have Vol. 1 to compare. That is the problem with buying music sight unseen. I wish Amazon could share a peak of the music before we buy. Most of the music arrangements in this book are beautiful and well done, but there are a few that just have too much repetition and frankly are too difficult for me. On the whole, I like the book and I love Mark Hayes arrangements. I have three of Mark Hayes Christmas books of original arrangements and I love them. Those arrangements are some of the most beautiful I have ever played.

Mark Hayes has done it again!

Mark has a way of writing arrangements that sound professional and advanced! Mr. Haye's sound is like no other arranger I've ever played from. His pieces are challenging yet fun to play! I've been the church pianist of my church since Fall 2010 and I incorporate Mark Hayes arrangements into my preludes, offertories and postludes very often!

Good start, but some fundamental errors in Part 1 that could confuse novices. Wait for a later printing.

I bought my grandson, a college freshman majoring in informatics, this book as a gift: How Computers Work (10th Ed.) by Ron White, First Printing, Dec. 2014. I pre-ordered it from Amazon back in November, 2014, and it did arrive in time for the holidays.

While I applaud the effort and book overall, having owned several editions in the past, there are fundamental errors early in this first printing that could erode reader confidence, since the mistakes are so basic. I imagine this edition was rushed to press prior to the holiday season, and frankly, it shows.

Now I must explain to my grandson the mistakes, and apologize.

Here's just a sample of what I've found so far in Part 1:

1. A table is not a computer, but a tablet such as an iPad is: Page 5, last paragraph: "--mainframe, desktop, table, digital music player, ... " ???

2. P. 13, image 3, 4th sentence is not a sentence and doesn't help the explanation: "Resistance is how the material which the electricity is flowing." ???

3. P. 15, image 5. The image of the rheostat is confusing and makes the opposite point it should. The way it is drawn, it contradicts the text. In fact, as the knob is turned clockwise, the amount of resistance should increase, not decrease as depicted in the image. When the knob in the diagram, as drawn, is turned clockwise, there is MORE resistive wire to travel through. The current out would therefore decrease. And that's just backwards to how knobs on radios and stereos normally work. Turning clockwise will increase the current out, not decrease it. Duh? 4. P. 17, image of Mona Lisa is wrong, contradicts text to the left in section 6: The Mona Lisa appears in COLOR. This is NOT a half-tone image, consisting of only black and white dots. The whole example could be improved by showing a contrast between a half-tone (1-bit color) and, say, a 256-bit color image of Mona Lisa. E.g., see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halftone .

5. P. 36, first paragraph. Pages XXX-xxx are referred to. Where are these pages?

6. I bought the digital edition also, wondering if the same mistakes are there. Yes, they are. Furthermore, the navigation when scrolling was not working correctly in the latest version of Firefox (34.05) for the Mac (OS X 10.10.1). When I use the left navigation menu, click on Chapter 1, How Waves take the Universe on a Joy Ride, then start scrolling down, the page jumps to the beginning of the book! I can't even read it, unless I start scrolling from the beginning of the book. Come on now, this is totally unacceptable.

So I tried Chrome (Version 39.0.2171.95 (64-bit)). While the navigation works, the first Interaction just came up with an empty black box with a yellow border. It just does NOT work at all (but surprisingly it does in Firefox, and I can add ducks to the waves, if I FIRST scroll from the beginning of the book to get there).

7. The interactive animation on Writing Data to RAM (and reading it) is confusing. When getting to Reading data from RAM (in the same interaction), the illustration is simply confusing. How can a capacitor send a current through a transistor that is CLOSED. The circuit is broken between the capacitor and the data line. How can current travel from the capacitor to the data line, if the switch is off? This is not logical. It must be wrong, or I'm missing something here.

Overall, this is NOT a good start to the book, and makes me a doubter of the accuracy of some of the content in this first printing/web edition. I'm afraid I cannot recommend this book to others at this time with errors I've discovered in the first few dozen pages.

I am not a computer novice, having started with programming in FORTRAN on mainframe computers with punched cards. I taught college students how to use computers over 4 decades. More recently, I've written interactive Web simulations, tutorials and tests that are widely used.

My advice: Wait for a later printing when some of these rather basic and embarrassing errors are fixed in the 10th edition.

I am finding errors early in the book

Beautiful illustrations, but I am finding errors. This one is forgivable, in the Introduction to the 10th Edition, page xviii: "...a computer that would return a solution in the form of punch cards". I remember punch cards for input, but not output. On page 17, I am asked to view an image of a two-bit Mona Lisa. But I see a color Mona Lisa. I think the image must be at least 8 bit. Also on page 17, the explanation for multi-bit sampling is not consistent with the Diagrams A and B that are referenced. The same diagrams are referenced a bit more intelligently in the discussion of sampling rate. Are the appropriate diagrams missing? Onward to Chapter 2, but I am disillusioned. Comments are welcome about suspected errors.

Excellent Computer Technology Explanations

I have personally been involved with computers and computer technology since 1960, from huge IBM mainframes and the initial Apple and IBM compatible PCs, to the current host of devices that allow almost everyone instant worldwide communication and access to virtually unlimited information. The evolution of this technology has been mind boggling. My former knowledge and expertise on the leading edge of this field is now lost to newer generations of science, children, and grandchildren. This book explains in simple terms with excellent illustrations the basics of computer technology.

The New Jersey Computer Club, of which I am President, no longer builds, repairs, or programs computers, but tries to assist seniors in learning about, purchasing, and using computer related products. Many only want an inexpensive way to communicate by email or text with others, or to share pictures, or get information, or hear music or watch videos, and/or live in a world with online shopping and banking. But many others want to know why and how everything works. This book answers those basic questions, and introduces the concepts and terminology for further investigation.

It's not a text that you must read cover to cover, getting lost in details along the way. It is a series of short well explained articles that you can peruse in any order that interests you. Today you may want to know about computer components; tomorrow the Internet; or maybe digital cameras or smart-phones. This is a great place to start. It is leisurely reading for everyone, and not a manual on a specific topic. The book title might be better, as “How Computer Technology Works” to differentiate it from prior editions that focused more on just computers.

This book has an excellent selection of diverse topics that are both meaningful and current, especially in this rapidly changing field. Technical data that is soon obsolete is minimal, in favor of technical concepts that are more lasting. Periodic supplemental articles on new technology, or significant changes in existing technology, would be a welcome addition on the Que website for registered owners of this book, as well as a current technology time-line and references listing.

No technical book of this size and complexity is perfect, and there are typos and errata that need correction, but I haven't found any other book that explains so much so well. Another winner for Que and Ron White. Thank you.

J'ai tout lu en détail, je fais mieux mes exercices fitness, et ça change vraiment tout : meilleur placement, respiration, les erreurs à ne pas commettre sont listées. Un tas de conseils, de trucs, et j'ai vraiment compris comment fonctionnent les muscles avec les schémas.
En plus, l'auteur Max Carel est un coach sportif hyper diplômé et reconnu. Lecture agréable, instructive, utile. What else ?

About the Author
Stanley Baran earned his Ph.D. in communication research at the University of Massachusetts after taking his M.A. in journalism at Pennsylvania State University. He taught for 4 years at Cleveland State University, eventually moving to the University of Texas. He led the Department of Radio-TV-Film’s graduate program for 6 of his 9 years in Austin and won numerous teaching awards there, including the AMOCO Teaching Excellence Award as the best instructor on that 40,000-student campus, the College of Communication’s Teaching Excellence Award as that college’s outstanding professor, and Utmost Magazine’s Student Poll for best instructor. Dr. Baran moved to San Jose State University in 1987 and served 9 years as chair of the Department of Television, Radio, Film, and Theatre. At SJSU he was named President’s Scholar as the University’s outstanding researcher. Now, he teaches at Bryant University, where he is the founding chair of that school’s Communication Department. Among his other experiences shaping this book are service as a Fulbright Scholar and his many years of professional activity in audience research, writing for radio, and producing for television. Dr. Baran has published 10 books and scores of scholarly articles and sits or has sat on the editorial boards of six journals. His work has been translated into half-a-dozen languages. He is a skilled boater and a tenor saxophonist for the Wakefield, Rhode Island, Concert Band. He is married to Susan Baran and has two very cool children, Matt and Jordan, who grew up much faster than he wanted.

An excellent textbook and resource

Really one of the best textbooks I've ever read. It's clear, concise, easy to read, and informative. It covers something we all need to know in the 21st century: media literacy. While I did know much of the material already, I am learning things, even beyond little factoids here and there.

This is especially important for me, since I am a media content provider.

Prior to jpining academia, Mr. Haddow worked for eight years in the Office of the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as the White House Liaison and the deputy Chief of Staff. He is a founding partner of Bullock and Haddow LLC, a disaster management consulting firm.

Jane A. Bullock has worked in emergency management for over 20 years most recently as the Chief of Staff to James Lee Witt the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In this position Ms. Bullock served as principal advisor to the Director on all Agency programmatic and administrative activities, provided advice and recommendations to the Director on policies required to carry out the mission of the agency; managed the day-to-day operations of the Agency; directed, monitored, and evaluated Agency strategic and communication processes; and oversaw administration of the Agency’s resources, including the disaster relief fund. Represented the Director and the Administration with Congress, State and municipal governments, foreign officials, constituent groups and the media. Served as a principal spokesperson for the Agency’s programs both before, during and after disasters. Chief architect of FEMA’s Project Impact: Building Disaster Resistant Communities, a nationwide effort by communities and businesses to implement prevention and risk reduction programs. Principal on a project to create National Disaster Response and Mitigation system for Argentina and in six Central American and Caribbean countries. Served as part of the Clinton Administration’s communications team for the Y2K issue.

Damon P. Coppola is a Partner with Bullock and Haddow LLC, a disaster management consulting firm. He has extensive experience in disaster preparedness and planning through his work with the World Bank Group; The Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management; the US Army Corps of Engineers; and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, among others. Mr. Coppola is the author of Introduction to International Disaster Management (Butterworth-Heinemann), and co-author of Introduction to Homeland Security (Butterworth-Heinemann) and Hazards Risk Management (The Federal Emergency Management Agency). He has also been published in several industry journals, including Disaster Prevention and Management, The Beacon, The American Society of Professional Emergency Planners Journal, and The International Association of Emergency Managers Newsletter, among others. Mr. Coppola holds an M.E.M in Crisis, Emergency, and Risk Management from George Washington University.

Mediocre Text, Full of Political Bias and Errors

The text seems to do a decent job of presenting the current state of emergency management, and covers a wide range of mitigation, preparedness, response, and additional topics (from a "general" perspective).

The first sections of the book, however, are filled with obvious political bias and pandering/blaming. The authors spent time working under the Clinton Administrations FEMA, and seem to spend no time hiding their disdain for all things of the opposing political aisle. I don't have a particular preference as far as politics goes, but the text makes it too obvious not to see. I appreciate later sections of the book, but none of this was really necessary to explore the topic, and made me question the integrity of subsequent chapters.

In addition to that, there are numerous factual and date errors that, for a 5th edition of a book, seem too glaring to not have been caught. These persist throughout the book, along with many instances of awkward phrasing.

Excellent text for introductory and intermediate Emergency Management

This text provides and in-depth analysis of Emergency Management. The free online chapter quizzes are a wonderful addition for a full understanding of the subject area. I would recommend this text to anyone looking to get a good understanding of the field without the complexity of unfamiliar terminology.

readable literary criticism of Donaldson

Keep in mind, contrary to most of the reviews below, this is NOT a novel by Stephen Donaldson. It's a scholarly book written by a PhD ABOUT Donaldson's Thomas Covenant trilogies. If you're looking for the actual books, don't get this one. As for this book, Variations on the Fantasy Tradition, it's readable, if somewhat over written and in places awkward--a common failing of academic writing. It examines Donaldson's Covenant books (mainly the First Chronicles) in light of general trends and tendencies in fantasy. As such, it's often a compare-contrast operation: this is what a fantasy hero is usually like; this is how Thomas Covenant is similar and different from the standard fantasy hero. It covers in its chapters the hero and how Covenant is something of an inversion of the typical hero; comparisons to Tolkien; myth and how it is used in the Covenant books; the significance/importance of knowledge in the books and how it is gained; the narrative structure; and how life and death are viewed and what meanings they are given in the text. It also does a general coverage of the Second Chronicles. Some "trivia" are gotten wrong or misstated, so that could have been tightened up, though that in itself doesn't affect any of the main points made. The scholarship isn't ground-breaking and it's fairly straightforward, but interesting to me as someone who liked the Covenant books and has taken English courses. The interviews with Donaldson are interesting, though I wouldn't buy it only for them ....If you liked thinking about the themes and ideas in the Covenant books, you may like this, though more of it is devoted to form and structure and than the meanings/reasons behind them (i.e. how Covenant differs from typical heros as opposed to _why_ make him not like other heros). But, then, that's not really why this book was written. It's aim is to locate Donaldson in the literary canon of fantasy. So in that sense, it does all right. Say, three and a half stars.

Excellent review of Donaldson's work

As a fan of Donaldson's Covenant series, I was delighted to see that there was a scholarly work of literary criticism covering the Chronicles. There have been so many written about The Lord of the Rings (deservedly so) but none regarding Covenant. I felt this was a mistake, as Donaldson's works, while certainly not equal to Tolkien's, bear significant literary merit.

One of the things I found most interesting was the shared vocabulary between Senior and Donaldson. Any reader of Donaldson knows that he enjoys employing archaic words. Senior even levies this as somewhat of a criticism. However, *he uses some of the same words*. I couldn't help but chuckle. To argue for clarity, and then go against your own argument is, well, silly.

But that's the worst I can say about the book. Other than works on literary criticism regarding Tolkien, this was one of the very few that I read from cover to cover. He didn't miss many points (although as others have pointed out there were some factual innaccuries; these were minor, though).

She currently lives with her husband in Los Angeles and is working on her next (a children's) book.

Very endearing, but very little of Batgirl!

You can't help but love Yvonne Craig as she recounts her days as a ballerina and actress in a very charming way, but I'm afraid Bat-fans will be sorely dissapointed that Ms. Craig tells very little of her days as Batgirl! Granted, it was a short period of her life and only one role of the many she has played but I dare say it's the one she's most famous for. However she does have some interesting anecdotes to tell about several famous people and also some odd stories concerning her curious love of exotic pets (an anteater?? who the hell wants THAT for a pet??).

A Joy To Read

Before opening Yvonne Craig's book "From Ballet To The Batcave And Beyond," I had read all the comments by readers, who had complained that too much of the book dealt with the ballet and with people whom Ms. Craig met while making movies and doing guest appearances on old television shows. Some seemed disappointed that there was nothing risque or "juicy," and that too many chapters were dedicated to subjects in which people who would read an Yvonne Craig autobiography would not be interested. I also read that there wasn't enough in the book about the "Batman" series. So, quite frankly, being a HUGE "Batman" fan, I half-expected to be bored by much, if not most, of this book.
WRONG!
Ms. Craig has such a delightful writing style, intelligence, a great vocabulary and a wonderful sense of humor, that I found the ENTIRE book just a JOY to read. So much so, that I, who know nothing about, and have virtually no interest in, the ballet, found even *those* sections of the book interesting and entertaining. And, although I am not what one might call an "animal lover," I immensely enjoyed her chapter dedicated to the animals in her life through the years.
Even her literary treatments of those individuals in Hollywood of whom she does not or did not seem to think very highly -- Lee Majors, Rudy Vallee, William Shatner, Charles Bronson -- were tasteful, and done with class and just the right amount of humor.
At the risk of sounding corny or something, it is apparent to me that there was once a May day when our Heavenly Father must have been quite pleased with this world, for on that day He gave us a most remarkable and special gift which we call "Yvonne."

Great, fun reading--"Bat-tastic!"

Having been fortunate enough to meet Ms. Craig a few years ago at a personal appearance of hers in Chicago and finding her to be an individual of great warmth and humor, I looked forward to this book coming out. And I wasn't disappointed. Ms. Craig, in these pages, further proves herself a winning individual: funny and earthy, with the rare gift (esp. among "show folk") of being able to take herself seriously but not TOO seriously. She's also a great storyteller--economical and insightful; and her common-sense asides are often laugh out loud funny.
Craig's book is also an interesting first-person account of the life of the journeyman actor. Like Bradford Dillman's equally fine memoir, "Are You Anybody?," she deftly takes the reader to an important transitional time in Hollywood history, from the waning days of the studio system to the more "free lance" film/TV world we have today.
But those wanting to read only about her adventures on the sets of "Batman" or "Star Trek" or any of her other film/TV credits won't be disappointed. She relates all sorts of inside "scoop" with great candor and, refreshingly, with an enormous deal of gratitude.

This book clearly relates the fretboard to the same musical principles all professionals on any instrument use, teaching the practical hands-on basics without glossing over the theory every guitarist should know. It does not invent its own terminology or pattern numbering system, a problem that has lessened the value of many books like this in the past. The CAGED-based fretboard system used has world-wide recognition and a long historic basis, refined and tweaked in Musicians Institute curricula since 1977 by hundreds of instructors after its introduction by Howard Roberts in the early 1970s.

You'll cover everything you need for a rock-solid foundation, including modes and slash chords. You'll understand and play (anywhere on the neck!) any scale or chord you encounter or imagine. Besides offering you a chance to completely grasp the guitar, this method assures you will be able to communicate with other trained musicians no matter what their instrument.

The book was designed for use in three arenas: private lessons, classroom instruction, and personal study by the motivated individual. There are 22 short chapters of very gradually increasing difficulty, suitable for teaching in 20-30 minute time frames. Each chapter has modest written and playing assignments, with all the answers in the back of the book. The text was written specifically to be concise, informative, and fun, yet easily understood by non-native English speakers.

About the Author
Barrett Tagliarino has been an MI instructor since 1987 and was Rock Department Head at Hohner MusikSchule in Vienna, Austria in 1994. He’s toured on boats, trains, and buses, by plane, van, and auto, performing countless gigs and sessions, and teaching seminars, clinics, and private lessons.

He has recorded for CD sessions, TV shows, radio commercials, and Karaoke soundtracks. His teaching skills are featured on the Starlicks instructional video, Classic Rock Guitar Soloing. Barrett has also been published in magazines such as Guitar Player and Guitar One.

Must have for any serious guitarist!

I love this book! I have been playing the guitar for 37 years and never seen a book quite like this one. I have used Mel Bays 1-8 series, Frederick Noad, Hal Leonard, Leavitt Berkeley 1-3, Segovia and many other compilations. This book stands alone as a must have for any guitar player desiring to excel on the fretboard, play lead, tacets, licks, etc. Scales over chords is the basic theme here and the book teaches several methods for viewing the fretboard in different manners not taught by any other method I have seen. The author has you visualize the notes on the fretboard by drawing out relationships such as the 5 shapes method, the half-steps method (E-F & B-C) to name a couple. This is a must have for any serious guitarist!

This book is nothing short of amazing!!!
I have been playing guitar for 20 years this month, and never took the time to learn much of the theory as it was always too much to memorize...
Firstly, I recommend this book to the novice who just wants to learn a few songs just to impress some ladies - on up to the professional guitarists making a living on their 6 stringed' friend.
Beginners: Don't be threatened. The first chapter is designed to get you familiar with the guitar. This book promises to make accomplished guitarists out of people first learning guitar within a year, and I believe with the discipline ANYONE can do it.
Intermediate: This may be your next step to becoming one of the greats. This would have set me way above the rest of the students in all school and garage bands at my age.
Advanced: (I consider myself to be between this and the next) It's not too late! You will make light work of this and jump leaps and bounds from where you left off. It will probably be most exciting for you.
Professionals: You will already know a lot of this. This will help you fly through the book. By showing you shortcuts, you can access more notes, faster than you're able to drudge up from memorized scales and repetitive riffs. And of course one of the great things about being a good guitarist is being able to teach right!?
This can be the ultimate workbook for your students. They will, (with your help) learn quickly too, and you may be able to expand your "skill range" of students you're able to teach. And your reputation will reflect. If you're anything like me, I can always use help with being more creative soloing and this book does that for me too.

This book has ways, only for the guitar, to get around a lot of the boring parts of theory that you have to memorize. For example, instead of learning what note every fret is on the board one by one (which is important if you want to play professionally), this workbook shows you five simple patterns to memorize. You build on these patterns in each chapter until you can play any mode of any scale from anywhere on your guitar! You will automatically become familiar with the names and be able to figure out what every note is if you haven't yet memorized that the 2nd string 11th fret is a B flat.
You'll learn everything you need to know about the fret board just by having fun with these root shapes and patterns.
I learned to play by ear and over the first few years, I had been forced to memorize some of these root shapes, so I already knew somewhat of the importance of these patterns. I can and have jammed with some great musicians over the years, but one thing I felt I couldn't do very well was solo, unless I was familiar with the key and had memorized riffs I could slip into variations of the melody to sound good, and even then, I'll still hit an accidental and sound just as good as my one year old! I never took the time to memorize but a handful of scales; never enough to improvise or be creative with my solos.
By getting familiar with these patterns and learning how they connect to each other and can be played everywhere, I found they would be the foundation to every chord, arpeggio, and scale that I did know and ever wanted to know!!
You won't regret this creative way of looking at the relationships between the scales and arpeggios, and in a light funny way of presenting it to you. The book uses hands on, verbal exercises, and plenty of diagrams to show and explain to every kind of learner what exactly is happening in each chapter. Highly recommend!!!!

I have been studying guitar and purchasing books and music for many years and I can honestly say this book is excellent. Even if you already have the fretboard memorized this book opens up an entire new way of looking at it. For me it helped me get to notes up the fretboard quicker. It's kind of like learning the alphabet in a different way. I can only imagine how this book is going to greatly help the beginner get a quick handle on the fretboard. I don't know if the author reads these reviews but if he does, I would say be very proud of this work and the way you have presented it. These are the things that some accomplished guitarists fail to share with the rest of us trying to learn our instrument. I thank you so much for sharing.
