The importance of teaching ethics in higher education has never been greater. In our rapidly changing, globally expanding world, key challenges and problems revolve around fundamental issues in ethics. Leadership in such a world demands courage, commitment, character and good ethical reasoning skills to address these challenges head on. With the eleventh edition of Ethics: Theory and Practice I wish to acknowledge the significant contributions made by all involved in the teaching of ethics courses who engage students with the core issues of our time.

 

Ethics: Theory and Practice is utilized by many professors in their ethics courses and I invite you to review the eleventh edition. The book is divided into eight chapters of ethical theory balanced by eight chapters of applied ethics. It also includes eight appendices. The text is comprehensive, and each chapter features a chapter summary, many exercises with suggestions for paper topics and ethics projects, and a list of discussion questions and an ethics problem. In addition, each chapter on applied ethics includes many case studies. Ethics

I found this book a very interesting read. The most important aspect of the text is the wide ranging perceptions and ideologies of so many people in the world. I feel that as we try to understand the psychological make-up of the world and the decisions that we have made through the centuries then this id definitely the book to help assist in the review of the decisions that we have made.

The book was part of my ethics class and the class interaction with regards to the text was probably the most important part of the entire course. I would encourage all readers work through the questions and worksheets at the end of each chapter. It just helps clarify your thoughts and understanding of the work that is discussed in each chapter.

Whenever I study a text about ethics I expect to hear that religion should not be the only basis for having good moral or ethics. Thiroux and Krasemann were no exception While I disagree with this opinion the authors did make a case that all can and should have ethical training and that it should be in the home as a start but should also come from our educators. Well written. If you're religious don't be offended. I wasn't. The book was delivered on time and in good shape

About the Author
Pierce Brown is the New York Times bestselling author of Red Rising and Golden Son. While trying to make it as a writer, Brown worked as a manager of social media at a startup tech company, toiled as a peon on the Disney lot at ABC Studios, did his time as an NBC page, and gave sleep deprivation a new meaning during his stint as an aide on a U.S. Senate campaign. I read this as quickly as I read the first one!

I read Red Rising in a matter of a few days and it was the same with Golden Son (which I picked up *immediately* after Red Rising).

A lot of the things I liked about Red Rising were present in Golden Son, as well. The raw emotion we saw in the first 20% of so of book one were here, too, although it was a little more spaced out and there wasn't quite as much of it. But every time I was becoming a little less invested in the story, there'd be one of those moments where Darrow (the POV character, if you haven't read book one) would remember why he was doing what he was doing, what he was fighting for, something about his past, etc., and I'd be pulled right back in.

I think characterization is a little uneven here, but that's the nature of any first-person POV book. Darrow is complex and intelligent and doesn't ever forget where he came from. However, he has conflicting emotions and he is most definitely NOT infallible. And he's walking a tight line -- he needs the support of his high-status (Gold) patron, but his own feelings tend towards "demokratic" (to use the spelling from the book). There are some revelations about certain characters in the book that almost make me want to go back and read Red Rising again with this additional knowledge, to see if there were subtle clues in their behavior that pointed towards future events.

One thing this book has going for it is that the villains who play main roles in the story are not one-dimensional. And you don't always know they're villains, until it's too late. Trust is a big issue here -- Darrow wants to trust people but sometimes chooses the wrong allies, sometimes shuts out people he shouldn't. But he also makes some decisions to trust people, especially people with lower social status (lets a Blue captain his ship, lets an Orange give him advice with respect to throwing off enemies, gives a Stained man a weapon traditionally used only by the nobility) that I think will be important in book three. (If you haven't read book one, various social classes have colors and pretty much everything they are allowed to do or not do is dictated by what color a person is born into. Darrow was born a Red -- a low working class -- but has been altered to appear a Gold, the ruling class.)

The weak point, I think, is that this is a very similar book to Red Rising. What was carried out on the ground with castles, among students, was transferred to ships in space. The same rivalries and many of the same characters were back. (On the plus side, the same narrative structure of defeat followed by victory followed by defeat was in place, and that really worked. Pierce Brown doesn't really ever take EVERYTHING away from his heroes, even when things are looking pretty grim. There's always some way out. I hate reading about defeats for characters I've come to care about, but I know that if I get through them, some triumph -- even a small one -- is sure to come soon. So even though the book did not end on a happy note for me -- and it was somewhat of a cliffhanger, for people who hate such things -- I have hopes for the outcome after volume three, and wish I didn't have to wait for it!)

This series is shaping up to be a rather typical hero's journey, I think. It has a fair amount in common (overall structure wise, though not with respect to individual events) with the original Star Wars trilogy. I sometimes get bored with such stories, but the writing style (present tense, too, which usually bothers me but I don't even notice it here), the emotion, the action, and the ups and downs really all worked together to keep me interested.

I would not start the series with this book. Not only will you learn so much more about the characters, the world of the story, etc., when you read about them in book one, but Red Rising is really an entertaining book in its own right and you won't want to miss out on that.

Even better than the first one

The political intrigue, outer space, the murder, the gore, the dystopian setting. I love this book. Its better than the first one. There is so much violence that is tempered with introspection.I can’t tell you how well written this book is. I loved the first one immensely and never thought for a moment that the second could be so much better. I love being wrong!

There was depth in the first book. The characters were well rounded and intense, but in this one they go deeper. We learn who is really with Darrow and how he navigates the fine line between successfully creating dissent among the political leaders and failure causing a civil uprising.

He is like an M&M. A tough hard outer shell protecting the soft vulnerable inside. And I think he is delicious. I love him for his faithfulness to his dead wife. He is constantly weighing and measuring himself, trying to make sure his choices are what Eo truly stood for. It was quite a beautiful read.

There was nothing that was left out in this book. The action scenes were spectacularly detailed. The intrigue was substantial and I could piece together the different factions that were involved. The love story was epic. EPIC I tell you. There wasn’t a lot of romance to speak of. I know it sounds confusing but you must understand this is during a time of reform and the people are capable of great love but unable to express it and become involved till their nation is at rest. That’s the caliber of characters I was reading. So brave of them to put aside their petty self interests for the great of their world, don’t ya think?

I can;t say enough about this book. If you haven’t read it and are a fan of Sci-fi/Dystopian, this is the book for you! If you can’t afford it, hit me up and I’ll see if it lets me loan it to you. Everyone should read this series!!! Can’t wait to get my greedy little hands on the next one!

Golden Son continues the story of Darrow, a deep-undercover agent of the low-caste Reds, who is uniquely positioned among the high-caste Golds, and is trying to sow discord in an effort to restructure the society that keeps his people as slaves. It's the second book in the Red Rising trilogy, and is as exciting as the first.

The series strikes at the fundamental core of our American independence - free will. Many stories have been told of dystopic societies that paint a worrisome future for us if we "continue down the path we're on." Most of them have oppressive regimes that all feel they are doing what is necessary to keep the peace. Look to Star Wars and The Hunger Games, to name just a few. These stories take our fundamental desire for free will and suppress it in a structure that appeals to the reader on a visceral level.

Brown does a remarkable job of playing with the reader's emotions, to the point where one takes personal offense at the content of the story. This draws the reader in and attaches themselves to the fate of the characters, willing the characters to make the right choices and make the same decisions the reader would make. You're all but cheering along with the victories, and weeping with the tragedies.

The world Brown has built is rich and expansive. Not just the planetary scale of characters, but the depth with which the society has been carefully constructed to serve the story and reflect history. There's enough for everyone to relate to from a historical perspective, and yet it's easy to become lost in the overwhelming "now" of the narrative.

Golden Son is as amazing as Red Rising; the story is relentless and engaging, if not a bit predictable. Just a bit, though. There are patterns that must be followed of course, but you'll still enjoy the ride the entire time.

A sweet romance that explores a difficult topic.

In 1998, I read Bruce Bawer's book, A Place at the Table. In it, he postulates a simple idea: being LGBT doesn't mean, or require, being a part of a perceived subculture that emphasized (at the time) promiscuity and a rejection of Christianity and its values. He proposed that being "gay" was not immoral, even for Christian believers.

His postulate is now the way many people do think of LGBT : people who want committed relationships, a meaningful relationship with God, marriage, and family. LGBT people are fundamentally people who want mainly what "straight" people want.

But - especially in the Bible belt of rural America - bigotry based on fundamentalist biblical interpretation is not a hypothetical problem for either LGBT kids or their parents. For those that are LGBT, there is tension between city and country, fundamentalist and main-stream theology, public life and home life.

This isn't written as literary fiction. It's a romance. However, this book explores heavier themes of Lesbianism and faith with skill and compassion.

This book is one of the dreamiest, most romantic YAs I've read in a long while. Anna and the French Kiss level of romantic. Jo is an unforgettable character who knows exactly who she is, even while wearing an awful bridesmaid dress at her preacher dad's latest wedding. She sacrifices that certainty for her father, family, and faith, all while falling in love with the magnetic girl-next-door. It's sweet, hot, sexy, and so funny. And it all wraps up with the most romantic movie HEA squee of YES. I loved it.

Like Jaye Robin Brown's first book NO PLACE TO FALL, this new story is oozing with southern charm. The romance is sweet and spicy and so are the characters. I love how authentic the voices sound, as well as a premise that explores the struggle of an already out gay character feeling pressured by her radio-minister father to hide her sexual orientation, just before she meets the girl of her dreams. Jo is a whip-smart main character, who values friendship, faith, family, and falling in love. You'll be rooting for her to attain all of the above, plus her own radio show.

Daniel Yergin's first prize-winning book, Shattered Peace, was a history of the Cold War. Afterwards the young academic star joined the energy project of the Harvard Business School and wrote the best-seller Energy Future. Following on from there, The Prize, winner of the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction, is a comprehensive history of one of the commodities that powers the world--oil. Founded in the 19th century, the oil industry began producing kerosene for lamps and progressed to gasoline. Huge personal fortunes arose from it, and whole nations sprung out of the power politics of the oil wells. Yergin's fascinating account sweeps from early robber barons like John D. Rockefeller, to the oil crisis of the 1970s, through to the Gulf War.

This book does not require recent events in the Persian Gulf to make it an essential addition for most public libraries as well as all college libraries. Written by one of the foremost U.S. authorities on energy, it is a major work in the field, replete with enough insight to satisfy the scholar and sufficient concern with the drama and colorful personalities in the history of oil to capture the interest of the general public. Though lengthy, the book never drags in developing its themes: the relationship of oil to the rise of modern capitalism; the intertwining relations between oil, politics, and international power; and the relationship between oil and society in what Yergin calls today's age of "Hydrocarbon Man." Parts of the story have been told as authoritatively before, e.g., in Irvine Anderson's Aramco: The United States and Saudi Arabia ( LJ 7/81), but never in as comprehensive a fashion as here.

I was pleasantly surprised at all the fantastic history, details and information this book contains

Having spent the past 26 years working in the oil, refining and chemical industry, I finally took it upon myself to read this book. While I knew some of the information and history, based on word of mouth and working at multiple different refining companies, I was pleasantly surprised at all the fantastic history, details and information this book contains. It is truly the premier history of the oil industry within the US. An easy read, too - it is engaging, keeps your interest, and presents information at a level that everyone can understand - no need to be an engineer to understand the book. Nice job!

The Prize — Buy the 2008 Edition

The new edition costs the same.

Yergin's prize-winning history stretches from the first Pennsylvania oil rush in 1860 to the crash of world oil prices in 2008, and it all reads like a novel. Well, not quite. The epilogue, which covers the period after the Gulf war in 11 pages, skims along ten times faster than the rest and feels a bit more like a history lesson. But it gives you a balanced view of recent events.

I bought the original version as I started researching energy. Two full bookshelves later, I can tell you, no other book in this field holds a candle to it for fascination and information. I've read complaints about what it doesn't cover so here are some alternatives, but if you want tales of the way greed, ignorance, and cleverness respond to natural wealth and, in turn, shape world history and current global politics, this is your book.

For oil geology and exploration, read Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage (New Edition). Oil industry nitty-gritty: Oil on the Brain: Petroleum's Long, Strange Trip to Your Tank. What to do about OPEC: Carbonomics: How to Fix the Climate and Charge It to OPEC. Alternatives to Oil: Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, Third Edition. Big Oil's power: The Tyranny of Oil: The World's Most Powerful Industry--and What We Must Do to Stop It.

There's no summarizing such a book, but here's the sort of tales he tells. The 1930 discovery of the Black Giant in East Texas nearly destroyed the oil industry, sending prices down to thirteen cents a barrel. After a voluntary shutdown failed, the Governor of Texas sent the Texas Rangers in on horseback. They shut down production and sent prices back up. This led to the Texas Railroad Commission becoming the first government-organized oil cartel — a model for OPEC years later.

As an economist I really appreciate the fact that Yergin gets his economics right. This is crucial for a book about price manipulation, and it's quite uncommon among popular books. For example he understands why the Saudis tried to hold price down in 1979 and why Bush Senior flew to Saudi Arabia in 1986 to try to get them to raise the price back up. Yergen helps you understand exactly why things happen in this topsey-turvey world. In any case, The Prize has been selling like hotcakes for 18 years. Whether you're fascinated by powerful historical forces or disgusted but intrigued by fossil fuel, you won't be disappointed.

I am amazed by how comprehensive and yet fascinating of a history Daniel Yergin has woven together. Perhaps one of the best and most relevant histories I have read. If you are at all concerned about oil's impact on the environment, this is a must read in order to better understand the oil industry and its beginnings. Thank you, Mr. Yergin.

Great Exam Guide ! Passed the N+ 006

This book helped me pass the N+ 006 . The book covers all the objectives pretty well. I read the book twice and took the practice exams. I also used
Professor Messer videos also.

This is the best of what I've read on the subject. Well organized and clearly thought out.

Well thought out and put together. Purchased it the day it became available from Amazon (5/18/2015) (you'll notice this is a verified purchase unlike some reviews for books from other authors). If you're on the fence between this and the book from Lammle, get this one, or order both and return Lammle when you see how much better this one is. Unfortunately, since Lammle's was the first to print (by about two weeks), I have his as well, which I wrote in, so there will be no returns for me.

I'll come back and firm up this review after I've completed the book, but this one seems like a winner from the first few chapters.

A must read if you plan on taking the Comptia Network + Certification Test

I never thought I would be able to pick up an instruction book like this and actually WANT to continue reading it! Great for someone who knows what they are doing and wants to prepare for the Network + Certification, or for someone like me... I have an interest, I'm working on my degree, but I don't have any real world experience with networks. This is a great read! Worth every penny! (And the information really does stick in your head!)

Linear programming attracted the interest of mathematicians during and after World War II when the first computers were constructed and methods for solving large linear programming problems were sought in connection with specific practical problems—for example, providing logistical support for the U.S. Armed Forces or modeling national economies. Early attempts to apply linear programming methods to solve practical problems failed to satisfy expectations. There were various reasons for the failure. One of them, which is the central topic of this book, was the inexactness of the data used to create the models. This phenomenon, inherent in most pratical problems, has been dealt with in several ways. At first, linear programming models used "average” values of inherently vague coefficients, but the optimal solutions of these models were not always optimal for the original problem itself. Later researchers developed the stochastic linear programming approach, but this too has its limitations. Recently, interest has been given to linear programming problems with data given as intervals, convex sets and/or fuzzy sets. The individual results of these studies have been promising, but the literature has not presented a unified theory. Linear Optimization Problems with Inexact Data attempts to present a comprehensive treatment of linear optimization with inexact data, summarizing existing results and presenting new ones within a unifying framework. Audience This book is intended for postgraduate or graduate students in the areas of operations research, optimization theory, linear algebra, interval analysis, reliable computing, and fuzzy sets. The book will also be useful for researchers in these respective areas.
