In the 1990s, this belief was put to the test by Edison Schools and other for-profit educational management organizations (EMOs). Edison grew rapidly, running schools in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and many other cities across the country. Yet disappointing academic and financial outcomes soon pushed the company and its competitors to the margins. The focus of EMOs on efficiency and results nevertheless found expression in federal policy with No Child Left Behind in 2002 and Race to the Top in 2009. The new ethos also defined nonprofit charter management organizations (CMOs) like KIPP that surfaced in the wake of EMOs and flourished. But the dependence of CMOs on philanthropists, tireless teachers, and students capable of abiding by rigid expectations limits their reach.
Abrams argues that while the commercial mindset sidesteps fundamental challenges, public schools should adopt lessons from the business world. Citing foreign practices, he recommends raising teacher salaries to attract and retain talent, conferring more autonomy on educators to build ownership, and employing sampling techniques rather than universal assessments to gauge student progress.

Excellent. Eye-popping investigative reporting on the non-profit and for-profit education initiatives of the past generation complements a rigorous academic apparatus of statistics, theory and international comparative analysis. Abrams begins in the early 1990's, when the former president of Yale (and president of Edison Schools)---as good a representative as any of the educational, cultural, economic and political elite of this country---stated that for-profit K-12 education "offers the best hope, perhaps the only hope" for education reform (p. 17). Abrams tests the hopes of "market-based" school reformers against the fresh data of outcomes and provides the hard data, narrative, and prescriptions that will, one hopes, reshape education policy in the US and overseas. Highest recommendation. For policymakers, philanthropists, politicians, educators and laypersons grappling with the costs, benefits and pitfalls of government policies that are presented as "market-based."

Good comprehensive book

Nice textbook with a lot of perfectly organized in detail information. Though to my opinion it lacks some general tables on bacteria, viruses etc. It is very clinically oriented comprehensive study and reference source.

A BIG step backwards from the 3rd edition!

I have taught academic English to university-level non-native speakers for over 30 years, and Azar's grammar series was a solid rock that I could build my courses on...until now.

Yes, this 4th edition has CDs, pretty colored pictures, and lots of conversational exercises, but from an academic perspective, despite its slick add-ons, this is NOT an improvement over the 3rd edition--in fact, in some ways it is a step backwards, particularly for academic-bound international students who may continue to use English internationally.

It is truly dismaying to see what has been deleted from the 3rd Edition to make room in the 4th Ed. for the CD listening exercises and strictly American colloquial items, at a time when internationalized English is most important.

I could write for quite a while about what essential academic English has been sacrificed, but just as one example, the "troublesome verbs" (i.e., raise/rise, sit/set, lay/lie), which often appear on the TOEFL and cannot be dispensed with in formal writing, have been relegated to a brief section in the appendix, and the 3rd Edition's excellent exercise for these verbs has been removed COMPLETELY!

Another thing that is important for university-bound students, the word "whereas" - which was presented in the 3rd Ed. along with "while" as a subordinator showing contrast - is now only mentioned in a small footnote. This is further dismay, considering that "whereas" is in technical writing a more precise, exclusive subordinator to indicate contrast, whereas [!] "while" doubles as a time subordinator.

Furthermore, the new "improved" list of irregular verbs omits the past participle "stricken" (used for situations of suffering), but it now includes the exclusively American informal "snuck" as a FIRST CHOICE for the past tense of "sneak"! Now my students may write: "Sadly, much of Africa has been STRUCK with AIDS" and "The illegal aliens SNUCK past the border patrol."

Betty Azar had achieved a fine textbook in the 3rd Edition, but the modifications that have been made in the 4th Edition (I suspect not fully approved by Azar) are largely regressions to U.S. colloquial English and are wastes of time for a teacher trying to train academic-bound students.

Update: 9 March 2011

I continue to be more and more gravely disappointed with this 4th Edition of a once fine grammar book. I discover more essential things deleted from the 4th Edition each time I teach from it. For example, the usage of the subjunctive (e.g. "It is critical that the President BE conciliatory in the future negotiations") has also been relegated to the appendix and Azar's fine exercise on the subjunctive has been removed entirely.

I am also upset that lessons on the perfect (a.k.a. past) infinitive and gerund forms have both been completely eliminated, so without supplementation by the teacher, students will not be taught to understand or to form constructions such as the following: "The teacher of the advanced level expects the students to have learned the irregular verbs." "Having just been hired for a lucrative position in an import-export company, he appreciates more than ever having mastered two languages."

NB: A NUMBER OF THE POSITIVE REVIEWS LISTED UNDER THIS 4th EDITION WERE ACTUALLY WRITTEN FOR THE THIRD EDITION.

I STILL continue to find more serious flaws in this 4th edition. I realize now that the Stative Passive of the 3rd Edition (i.e., passive constructions that are more like adjectives - "I'm tired", "The computer is broken", "The door was locked, so I couldn't get in.") is now called in the 4th Edition "NON-PROGRESSIVE PASSIVE" - a TOTALLY erroneous term for this construction!

A progressive passive would be "The new student is being given a placement test at the moment"; a non-progressive passive would be just a basic passive: "New students are given placement tests before they are placed in classes" -- not at all a stative passive. The gross flaws and shortcomings of this 4th edition are egregious!

As an instructor, I wish I could use a different book.

I teach from this book, and I would not suggest it to anyone looking for an ESL grammar book. There are many inappropriate examples (not teaching the structures they claim to). The biggest problem is probably that the answer key of both the book and the workbook are filled with errors, which makes things very difficult for the learner. Grammar is not explained very thoroughly. The book is lacking in visual stimuli, which are good to use to facilitate student discussion. (There are pictures, but they do not contextualize information, but simply illustrate a sentence or two.) Additionally, there is no coherence to the chapters. That is, no topics are covered, and therefore there is no extensive reading, and the grammar is always seen in a fairly decontextualized setting. The exercises in the book are not very diverse, mostly fill in the blank. Students almost never have to produce the entirety of a sentence on their own, and there is no extensive writing exercises.

On the positive end, the book does have many graphs and tables that are nicely laid out.

If you are looking for a good self study grammar book I would suggest Raymond Murphey's Grammar in Use. It has better explanations and is much more affordable. This book is required for my regression course. I love it so far! The concepts are described well and I like that it has example SAS and R code throughout. I've only just started using the text, so I can update when I've read more than the first 2 chapters.

Good, but could be better

Just started a course using this book. I have 30 years in R&D and wanted to increase my knowledge. On the one hand the book is pretty good at showing the theory but to me the text could be a little clearer. Beyond that the thing it most needs are more real world, worked out case studies. It's one thing to show an example of take this data, do that thing to it and voila, vs telling me why I should take that data, why I should do that thing instead of some other thing, and interpret what it means. The book too quickly jumps into higher level concerns before establishing a good grounding in fundamentals. In that respect it has much in common with other stats books I've used.

About the Author

Homer was probably born around 725BC on the Coast of Asia Minor, now the coast of Turkey, but then really a part of Greece. Homer was the first Greek writer whose work survives.

He was one of a long line of bards, or poets, who worked in the oral tradition. Homer and other bards of the time could recite, or chant, long epic poems. Both works attributed to Homer – the Iliad and the Odyssey – are over ten thousand lines long in the original. Homer must have had an amazing memory but was helped by the formulaic poetry style of the time.

In the Iliad Homer sang of death and glory, of a few days in the struggle between the Greeks and the Trojans. Mortal men played out their fate under the gaze of the gods. The Odyssey is the original collection of tall traveller’s tales. Odysseus, on his way home from the Trojan War, encounters all kinds of marvels from one-eyed giants to witches and beautiful temptresses. His adventures are many and memorable before he gets back to Ithaca and his faithful wife Penelope.

We can never be certain that both these stories belonged to Homer. In fact ‘Homer’ may not be a real name but a kind of nickname meaning perhaps ‘the hostage’ or ‘the blind one’. Whatever the truth of their origin, the two stories, developed around three thousand years ago, may well still be read in three thousand years’ time.

W.H.D. Rouse was one of the great 20th century experts on Ancient Greece, and headmaster of the Perse School, Cambridge, England, for 26 years. Under his leadership the school became widely known for the successful teaching of Greek and Latin as spoken languages. He derived his knowledge of the Greeks not only from his wide studies of classical literature, but also by travelling extensively in Greece. He died in 1950.

Abridged, but Excellent - and great fun, too

The Iliad was meant to be heard rather than read. It's a cliche, but it's true. So an audio version of the Iliad can be a great thing; rather than just a secondary version of a published book, it can be in some ways a purer representation of the original work. This recording is an (abridged) reading by Derek Jacobi of Robert Fagles's best-selling 1990 translation. I'll deal with three different aspects of this product separately: the translation, the performance, and the abridgement.

THE TRANSLATION (5 stars):

Judging a translation is a hard thing to do, and a lot of it comes down to personal aesthetic preference. Remember, all translations are paraphrase, and each can capture different facets of an original but none can capture all of it. This is particularly true of poetry, where much of the artistic content of the original is not only in the meaning of the words, but the sound, shape, and rhythm of the words themselves in the original language. What many translations of the Iliad lose, regardless of their literal accuracy, is the feel of Homer's verse - its directness, the concreteness of its language, and above all the headlong momentum of the whole thing. Homer's hexameter verse is propulsive, pulling the hearer (note: not the reader) forward with an unstoppable 15,000-line drumbeat that leaves you breathless. (Well, it leaves me breathless, anyway -- your mileage may vary.) Fagles captures this feeling magnificently in direct, confident, robust English. True, Fagles is not always literally accurate in the translation of specific words or epithets, but he expertly recreates the vigor of the piece. Richmond Lattimore's excellent translation (The Iliad of Homer) is closer to Homer in capturing some of the subtleties of wording, and is rigorous in its fidelity to the text, but the Fagles translation is my favorite for sheer heart-pounding excitement. The warrior spirit of the Iliad comes crashing through this translation undiluted and without apology.

THE PERFORMANCE (4 and a half stars):

Jacobi gives a spirited performance, with a forceful, fiery delivery well-suited to the heroic bombast of the battle scenes and the emotionally-charged clash of strong personalities. Achilles's offended pride, Hector's valiant but headstrong dedication to duty, Agamemnon's arrogance, and Paris's weasly self-serving faux contrition all come through vividly. My only criticisms of Jacobi's performance are these: while well-suited to the larger-than-life elements of the story, Jacobi can occasionally be too bombastic in a few of the more intimate moments. In addition (and this is admittedly a bit of a nitpick), I feel that he disregards the meter a little too much. As I mentioned above, the drumbeat of Homer's verse is a key aspect of its artistic appeal. Fagles chooses a loosely iambic meter which is not intrusive, but imparts a definite rhythm; at times, Jacobi all but ignores this and might as well be reading prose. There's no need for a bouncy Dr. Seuss-style delivery, but a bit more recognition of the rhythmic flow of the English version would suit me better. (This is, of course, a matter of taste.) Ian McKellen's (unabridged!) reading of Fagles's Odyssey translation (The Odyssey by Homer) is a contrast here: McKellen unobtrusively finds the rhythm of each line in a powerful (and a bit more textured) performance. These criticisms are by no means severe -- Jacobi's performance is excellent.

THE ABRIDGEMENT (3 stars):

Yes, as others note, this reading is abridged (approximately half of the text is left out), and a lot is unfortunately lost. When originally released on cassette in the early 1990s, the producers were probably skeptical of the sales potential of a 13-hour recording of an ancient Greek poem, and so hedged their bets with an abridgement. But both the print and recorded versions of Fagles's Iliad were surprising bestsellers. Happily, the publishers did not make the same mistake with Fagles's Odyssey, released in 1996: Ian McKellen's reading of that poem is unabridged (and glorious).

In this recording of the Iliad, most of the key episodes are preserved - for example the initial disagreement between Achilles and Agamemnon, Hector's return to Troy, Patroclus's death, Hector's death, and the final meeting between Achilles and Priam. Others are sadly missing. Some of the excised bits are obvious choices (the catalogue of ships in Book II is mercifully skipped over), but others are harder to bear. The biggest losses for me are Diomedes's gift of special sight on the battlefield in Book V and the funeral games for Patroclus, but most lovers of the Iliad will find some favorite moment or another gone.

But while the cuts are deep, they are fairly clean. Entire, unbroken blocks of text (ranging from dozens of lines to whole books) are removed en masse, rather than a line here and a line there; there is (thankfully) no resorting to paraphrase or condensing lines. Further, the excisions are well-marked: all words coming from Jacobi's mouth are directly from Fagles's translation; missing sections are bridged with summarizing narration read by a different narrator.

While the cuts are unfortunate, they do not generally detract from the high quality of the listening experience. For those who know the Iliad well, think of this as a terrific "greatest hits" version of the poem. Enjoy the parts that are here, and don't pine too much for the missing bits. You can always go back to the text for those.

Narration before Translation

Upon reading reviews of various audiobooks, I find that most reviewers comment too much upon the translation and too little upon the narration. Translation choice is certainly important but I think you have to find a narrator who makes the story exciting. After having listened to both the narration by George Guidall of the Fitzgerald translation and Derek Jacobi's narration of Robert Fagles' translation, I would say I prefer the Jacobi recording. Although both men give good performances, I think that Derek Jacobi's reading is the better of the two because his tempo and inflection more closely mirror the pitch and pause of the narrative drama. Regardless of which translator you prefer, the narration should take precedence over the choice of translation. I actually prefer Fitzgerald to Fagles as a translator and I'm not crazy about an abridged version of The Iliad in the Derek Jacobi (Fagles) audiobook. But if you're going to listen to a few hours of Homer, you'd better like the voice in the ether. I don't think you could go wrong with either of these two narrations but I would advise you to find some audio samples to compare performances before you make your purchase.

Compelling characters, bloody battles, this is classic lit definitely worth reading!

Set during the Trojan War, tension brews between Achilles and Agamemnon on the Greek side. Agamemnon steals Achilles’ war prize, Briseis, and Achilles then refuses to fight. The Trojans start to move in closer, under the leadership of Hector. Will Achilles fight or doom his comrades? The Iliad is a very bloody piece of literature. Warfare dominates almost every scene, and the book isn’t for the faint of heart. Besides the compelling human characters, gods play a part in The Iliad, and the gods just didn’t interest me at all. I had trouble following who was who, and which god was on which side, and I just didn’t care. But the human characters, especially Hector and Patroclus, I really loved. Definitely worth reading this piece of classic literature!

About the Author
CHRIS COCKS was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia in 1957 and served three years and 28 days as a combat NCO with 3 Commando, the Rhodesian Light Infantry (the RLI, an airborne/airmobile unit), from 1976 to 1979. He was then offered a farming job in the country’s Lowveld; however, the army refused to countenance a waiver of call-ups, so he attested into the British South Africa Police and spent the remaining 14 months of the bush war as a PATU (Police Anti-Terrorist Unit) stick leader and avoiding the Military Police. He moved to Johannesburg in 1996 and stumbled into a publishing career, specializing in southern African military history. He has written four books: the bestselling Fireforce: One Man’s War in the Rhodesian Light Infantry, its sequel Out of Action, a steamy novel Cyclone Blues, and co-wrote The Saints, the RLI’s history. He is the historian for The Rhodesian Light Infantry Regimental Association and edits its magazine, The Cheetah.

Fireforce ROCKS!!!

This is a great book, written by a guy who has more combat jumps than ANYONE in the US or UK military (well, that's unsubstanitated...but I'm pretty sure.) The book's about a conscript who signs on to become a regular in the Rhodesian Security Forces, Rhodesian Light Infantry. These guys jumped in combat several times a week. The American Paratroopers who had the most jumps in WW2 had maybe 5 combat jumps. The author had close to 40. I cannot say enought good things about this book. It's well written and easy to read. Very informative and full of good information. I'm reading these books to get insight on how to win against guerillas. The Rhodesians won militarily, but lost due to politics. It's the typical story of how the military does the right thing, fights well and wins, but is held back by gutless politicians. OK enough rant from me. The book is good. Lots of action, lots of detail. I'm not a professional reviewer (as if you couldn't tell), but this book was great! One of those that I didn't want to be over! The only better book I've read on the Rhodesian Bush War is At The Going Down Of The Sun, by Charlie Warren, another trooper that served with the author in the same unit. Both books are good and highly reccomended.

Right on it.

Story of a time when the world looked the other way and a lot of good people got s*****d over by Politicians, as usual. This is the inside detail of one of the finest Regiments ever to exist.
Spot on Chris, could see the barracks gates again and, almost smell it.

Super Book, Lots of Good Gouge

"Fireforce" is probably the best known and most widely read book to come out of Rhodesia's Bush War. This is in fact the fourth edition from 2006 and it's just a super read. Another personal narrative, this one is also written from the stick leader/section leader point of view. That being said, the author provided plenty of background information so the reader can see the bigger picture. Some of the things I appreciated about the book: 1. There are tons of photographs scattered throughout including two color photograph sections, 2. It has a good map and a good index, 3. Several interesting appendices for you to peruse including an operations order reproduced in its entirety, 4. A chapter on uniforms, comms, weapons, and equipment (both Rhodie and terr) and 5. Pencil sketches at the beginning of each chapter. This is not "zap-blat-gott-in-himmel-bayonet-in-the-guts" braggadocio of a former RLI soldier, it's solid (that goes for Charlie Warren's book too). I highly recommend it, it's a must read.

About the Author
Andreas D. Baxevanis, Ph.D. is the Deputy Director for Intramural Research and the Director of the Computational Genomics Program at the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health. He is currently the editor-in-chief of Current Protocols in Bioinformatics, senior editor of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, and associate editor of Proteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics. His involvement in educational activities include teaching bioinformatics at The Johns Hopkins University, serving as adjunct faculty at Boston University, lecturing in numerous courses, and developing materials intended to facilitate the use of genomic sequence data. He is the recipient of the Bodossaki Foundation's 2000 Academic Prize in Medicine and Biology.

Dr. B. F. Francis Ouellette is Director of the University of British Columbia Bioinformatics Centre and Director for the Canadian Genetic Disease Network (CGDN) Bioinformatics Facility, where he coordinates the Canadian Bioinformatics Workshop series. His research includes work on the Biomolecular Interaction Network Database (BIND), development of gene prediction tools, and use of comparative genomics approaches to help identify human genes. Dr. Ouellette has worked on yeast genome sequencing and analysis, and has previously served as GenBank coordinator at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), NIH.

Sort of decent...

This book is probably decent (though frustrating due to being so brief) for an introductory undergrad course, but it's not detailed enough for a graduate level course. Every time I wanted a more in-depth explanation of a subject, I'd first turn to this book. What a waste of time - I found better explanations and guides through Google!

Not a very useful textbook at all

I agree with the reviewer who said that this book is poorly organized. Actually, I would summarise this book with a single saying: TMI (Too Much Information)! In teaching you how to accomplish a simple task, the details given are tremendous, so much so that you can't see the forest from the trees and you end up having to navigate the bioinformatics Web sites by trial and error anyway. Perhaps this book would be useful for a post-doc or someone already very familiar with those sites and want to know how they work. For the student (undergrad through Master), I suggest picking up the short-n-sweet paperback 'Bioinformatics' by Westhead, Parish & Twyman instead.

Nice introductory book for learning the basics of bioinformatics. Even though this book is less than 5 years old, its somewhat dated due to the fast nature of the field.
