Carolyn Graham is the creator of Jazz Chants, which connect the rhythm of spoken American English to the beatof jazz. Exellent teaching pronunciation book for ESL/EFL learners

I am a Korean MATESOL student studing in the US. I have heard that Grahamn's Jazz chant is very good ESL source,and I have used her chants in my classes in Korea. The Jazz chant is very helpful in teaching rhythm and flow that English cotains. However the Jazz chants I have used before was just chants. They didn't have any guide lines. However,what drove me to attempt to write review of this book is that while I was looking for a book for pronunciation micro teaching, I happened to find this book in the library(Actually I didn't know this book was what my professor recommanded in class until I went over my notebook couple of minutes ago!) This book is very well organized and presents clear lesson points. It is definately wonderful to teach oral skills to English learners with fun. Not only does this book present chants but also has written exercises. I strongly recommand this book to ESL/EFL teachers.

Absolutely Vital to a Good ESL Program

From the first moment I heard these everyday conversations put to classic jazz music, I knew that I would be using Jazz Chants as long as I was involved in ESL. As the author of American Accent Training, I use Jazz Chants in conjunction with Dr. Seuss for a well-rounded accent program. The songs are catchy, and students find that the rhythms and patterns become ingrained in their memories far more effectively than with text study. They are constantly amazed that "Americans really talk this way!" and "I can actually hear the speech music!" Mere words cannot convey what a wonderful series of exercises this is. Carolyn Graham is a musical genius.

More basic than "Jazz Chants"

"Small Talk" has less vocabulary than other Jazz Chants books, and thus is good for true beginners. Chants are wonderfully empowering for students; they make students feel fluent right away, as well as starting them down the road of acquiring the rhythmn and intonation so particular to American English. Great concept!

In her enticing second book (after The Scorsese Connection), South African-born Australian writer Stern explores the rituals, economics and cultural role of smoking, and the exquisite hold tobacco takes over those who enjoy it. If Stern had limited herself to the cultural deconstruction at which she is adept, she might have written a work of cultural criticism But instead she links more than 50 often stunning and always intriguing pieces in a m?lange of genres, including fiction, memoir, history and criticism. Examining smoking from so many vantages, Stern touches on a number of themes. She offers glimpses of the tobacco trade in the former Rhodesia, where among tobacco farmers smoking was obligatory, almost patriotic, and she describes the tobacco sales rooms in Harare, Zimbabwe, where billions of dollars' worth of tobacco are sold annually. To understand tobacco's role in colonialism, she tells of early explorers' and invaders' forays in Africa, and to analyze smoking's cultural role she dips into Barthes and Derrida as well as opera, art and films. But it is desire that concerns the writer mostAfrom the opening paragraph, where smoke both wakens and dampens the appetites of two lovers, to her vivid description of two girls sneaking the ravishing pleasures of contraband Fanta, condensed milk, dried beef and cigarettes. Stern's engrossing panegyric to nicotine is a complicated web of memoir and cultural criticism in 54 pieces (plus notes and glossary) that touches on nearly every aspect of the addiction--including the pleasure. The vignettes cover an extremely wide range of experiences and interests and span six continents (no smoking on Antarctica), though most are set in Africa, where the author was raised, and Australia, where she lives and works. But no matter the place or whether the encounter (or lack of) is physical or intellectual, smoking is the fulcrum around which revolve her desires. Often, a cigarette, the thought of a cigarette, the smell of her own or someone else's burning cigarette, or even the image on a pack of cigarettes sends her (and the reader) down sometimes funny, sometimes painful, sometimes poignant Proustian tangents of recollection or thoughtful examination. Stern's writing is witty and peppered with interesting references, and the best pieces are her recollections of her youth and family in what was then Rhodesia, where she grew up on a tobacco farm and where the pleasures of addiction and cultural inquiry took root. Lesley Stern has written a smart, witty literary book about a million things important to us, using hybrid forms: short story, essay, meditation--all of which spin like smoke from the cultural conceit of the cigarette. This is a book about Africa, tobacco, orality, movies, sex, culture, desire and loss. The globe-trotting narrator takes us through the streets of Manhattan, o'er the freeways of LA, into hotel rooms in Tokyo, dinner parties in Scotland, as well as the tobacco farms and factories in Zimbabwe. Great fun--a winner.

Even the best are human also

It was the worst period of my life both financially and personally. Unemployed, and struggling. I thought about quitting. I reached for a book on my bookshelf and put it back when I noticed Donald's book. The tittle stood out to me. I am glad I did, because, I read it and I got fired up, and started focusing on solutions and not the problems. A must read for anyone who is struggling and needs help!

Die-Hard Fans May Cringe

This is illustrated by Jed Henry, so there is a completely different style of drawing. The faces of the characters don't look right and there are many inaccuracies in the physical features of the characters and in the scenes depicted. I enjoy different artistic styles, but when the artist changes features, that bothers me. (Just look at Momo on the cover). The illustrations are not just redrawn screenshots from the show, so that is unique. The book covers all three books of the series, but there is not much variation. The images go in order, but it definitely doesn't tell the Avatar story. Many important scenes are not depicted (would've been fun to color a lion turtle or something), and shots of the same scene are shown... at least that is how it feels to me. It just feels... repetitive.

To be honest, the Appa in here is uglier than Shyamalan's Appa.
