Field Marshal Erich von Manstein described his book as a personal narrative of a soldier, discussing only those matters that had direct bearing on events in the military field. The exception is the breathtaking autobiography of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, the brilliant author of many Germany victories against the Soviets in World War II. Dismissive of oft-cited ‘turning points,’ such as the German defeat at Stalingrad, von Manstein contends that the war was never winnable for Germany because of the leader prosecuting it. As for Hitler's once much-vaunted kinship with regular soldiers, he says the Fuehrer had ‘as little in common with the thoughts and emotions of soldiers as had his party with the Prussian virtues which it was so fond of invoking.’ Coming from Hitler's greatest general, it's a most effective filleting.”

After realizing how important von Manstein was, his memoires showed how it was done

It took me fifty years to understand who Erich von Manstein was, an orphan adopted into a family with a Prussian military tradition and with his new grandfather who had successful commanded an army, von Manstein desired to follow in those footsteps. As his mastery of strategic thinking grew, in 1940 he as chief of staff in one German army planned, pushed for and eventually won Hitler's approval over the heads of German military headquarters of his plan that won France in six weeks. From there he rose to command groups of armies on the eastern front as Field-Marshall von Manstein. His memoires describe in detail the strategic and tactical considerations, blows and counterblows which included victories and retreats until his relief in April of 1944. Even though the days of huge land battles are long gone, von Manstein's memoires teach us how huge strategic situations can be thought about and handled. He never was a Nazi, just a German soldier dedicated to his country who gave his best and lost his son in efforts for his country and fellow soldiers.

I have always been curious about how WWII looked form the side of the German military. Manstein's book opened my eyes to the destructive role Hitler played over the German military by interfering in the conduct of the war at the operational level. It also addressed the question of blind obedience the German Generals gave to Hitler. Unfortunately, it did not address the role of the paramilitary units that followed the army into conquered territories inflicting genocide on people. The book explains the idea of mobile war developed by the German General Staff after WWI and its implementation during WWII. One of the most revealing facts was that Hitler did not have an understanding of the doctrine and refused to allow the army to conduct strategic retreats to gain a military advantage by its mobility. This ultimately caused the collapse of the German army in the east through attrition. You have to have a basic understanding of Easter European geography to appreciate the details of each campaign.

Valuable When Read in Context

An incisive, well-written view of important WWII battles from the front row, this book is importantly balanced and enhanced by the accompanying commentary providing needed context about the author and his point of view. Manstein's role in forming post-war judgments on the Wehrmacht was significant, and the commentary helps place this book in its historical context. I found that the unit-by-unit battlefield detail could be wearying, as it was difficult to follow and Kindle does not do maps particularly well. Some of this was aimed, no doubt, at acknowledging the efforts of comrades in arms. The larger assessments were far more interesting to me, including those of Hitler as a military commander/strategist and the Wehrmacht's command, war and political issues. There is an unmistakable defensiveness to the narrative, certainly influenced by post-war and post-hoc concerns. Some of this seems to stem from Prussian military pride and tradition, offended by Hitler's direct involvement in military decisions and operations. But there is also a great silence about the the political units operating within his jurisdiction. Both the Wehrmacht and the Red Army fielded political authorities tasked with carrying out ideological warefare. These units on both sides were responsible for an appalling array of crimes against humanity. Tellingly Manstein describes the work of the Red Army's political commissars in influencing military decisions and operations, but says nothing at all about the work of their counter-part German political units, whose crimes he was ultimately made to answer for after the war. Taken in context, this is an informative and, at times, fascinating read of significant battles by an important commander. However, it is not by any means a full and frank record of those events.

AME Group's book, PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions, was key in my passing the PMP exam on the first attempt and by a substantial margin! I think this book is 'must have' study material. AME Group's (Aileen's) questions and explanations of Best and Wrong answers accelerated the process of understanding content and the inter-relationships of the project management processes. I also used Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep which had some very helpful information that can't be found in the PMBOK guide. However, I found Aileen's questions and solutions to be more representative of the exam than Rita's and much easier to digest. --R. Trojan

Going through Aileen Ellis' AME Group PMP Exam Prep Class and using her PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book was key in my passing the exam on the first try and receiving my PMP Credential. I have looked at several other PMP Exam Prep books and sets of Exam Prep Questions but none of them held up to AME Group's approach. Aileen's catch phrase ;Why the best answer is best and the wrong answers are wrong; accurately describes how she has carefully engineered a learning system that allows the PMP (or CAPM) candidate to place the myriad facts; Knowledge Areas; Process Groups; Inputs, Tools and Techniques, and Outputs; and the PMI Mindset; into an understandable context that greatly facilitates absorbing the PMBOK and thus being able to pass the exam. And, her questions were much more in line with what I saw in my exam than other sets of questions I have seen. In addition to using AME Group's PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book, those fortunate enough to also attend Aileen's PMP (or CAPM) Prep Classes as I did will also benefit from her ability to relate what's in the PMBOK to actual Project Management - sort of a two for the price of one; benefit that also contributes to the very impressive;Pass Rate; enjoyed by her students. In virtually all professional testing I have done in 40 years of engineering, flying, and professional development, when I have paid this much for a book of test questions, I have an expectation of some of these questions showing up on the actual test. The material in the PMP course is extremely detailed. This practice test book test depth was not nearly detailed enough to prepare for the PMP test. I thought I was prepared by understanding these questions. That was not true. I don't like being negative. But I like even less being led to believe that I was preparing correctly for this expensive test.

Not the greatest but useful.

Nothing wrong with this book. However if you want test questions then I would use the website [...] The reason this is a better option is that it simulates the actual question of the test and gives you PDU's to boot. I found this book really did not help me for the test as much as I wanted it too. I would recommend it a tool to help you study but as a test prep tool not so much. Stick with the InSite test banks prior to your test and you will be fine!

Essential reading for any budding veterinary neurologist

FIrst of all, there is little competition for this book - it NEEDED to be written! Where older (now out-of-print) texts are wordy and dry, with (fairly useless) black and white photos, this text is concise and to the point with plenty of beautiful color photos. I'm glad it's been written and can't recommend it highly enough.

Clinical and Experimental Opthalmology, Volume 34 -- "This is an atlas-style book and, as suggested by the title, is very comprehensively illustrated in colour. The text is succinct, and integrates well with the photographs that are of a uniformly high quality. I think this book would be an absolutely excellent addition for reference purposes to ophthalmic libraries and outpatient departments."

More on the skin than the eye

There are a lot of unusual diseases in this book. At least, unusual to the ophthalmologist. In other words, the focus seems to be on dermatologic disorders that may have ocular findings rather than ophthalmologic disorders that may have integumentary findings. That is part of what makes this book great for ophthalmologists.

The text is well written, but as it is with most books like this, the key features of a diseases are not emphasized as compared to a laundry list of findings. Also, little discussion exists on treatment. The chapter organization is good and the chapters are not overly long. The pictures, in general, are very good. However, there are a number of diseases in this "ATLAS" with no associated picture. And, the organization of the pictures is a little weird.

But, overall, I do recommend this book for ophthalmologists interested in rare diseases or "systemic disease." This book complements the kanski book on systemic disease and the one by Weingeist.

I heard Ivan Schuab MD lecture in Kansas City at the KCO&O and heard about this book. It is a good reference for common and uncommon eye-skin diseases. Identify uncommon diseases and may help treat insomnia.

Dense info, very thought-provoking points

As other reviewers have noted, Ungifted is part personal story, part professional opinion, and lots of reviewed and summarized research.

As for the research, this book is not an easy, engaging layperson's read along the lines of Bronson and Merryman's Nurture Shock, which I also enjoyed. In Ungifted, be prepared for some intellectual heavy lifting at times. The author is reviewing and summarizing tons of studies, painting a picture as complex as the topics he covers, as well as highlighting areas where more research is needed to answer remaining mysteries. When he was talking about something I wasn't that interested in, I became a bit bored slogging through all the material. But when it was a topic I was interested in, I appreciated every last drop of the information. Having read this cover to cover, I'd advise readers who find themselves in the midst of a topic they're not as interested in as others to just skim along a bit. You don't need to digest everything to understand the overall points he's making.

When it comes to the author's personal story and informed opinions, this has got to be one of the most likeable authors whose work I've ever read -- a mix of humility, vulnerability, compassion, determination, intelligence, humor and great accomplishment. Throughout the book are instances where what researchers know and what happens in practice to students are at odds. The author's personal story illustrates many lessons learned from the research he reviews on the landscape of human intelligence and achievement, but he's also enough of an exception to some of those correlations to serve as a vivid reminder that all should be encouraged and supported. While there are variables that increase or decrease one's likehihood of, say, getting a PhD from Yale, the author illustrates that we always need to be open to letting people surprise us.

Something I noticed is that the author seems to have come from a loving home with at least middle class, if not greater, resources. He had access to, and time to pursue, opportunities (some of which the author himself created) that helped him navigate an alternative route to high achievement as an adult. It's no secret that money buys advantage and opportunity, and such access by no means diminishes the author's achievements or the grit, creativity, intelligence and determination that won them. Lots of young people have time and resources but never do a quarter as much with them as this author.

The author's story did, however, get me thinking of the loss we endure as a society when we not only underestimate certain students' abilities but also fail to provide them -- if their parents cannot -- with opportunities and resources enabling them to navigate an alternative route to achievement. The voices of people who've "come up" through non-traditional paths, like the author's, have a lot to contribute that cannot be obtained from others. How many voices never contribute to our understanding and well-being when millions of poor children have only closed doors if they are underestimated during their school years? Existing efforts to help economically poor children level the playing field seem to focus on those who most closely fit our traditional expectations for high potential. What about all the others?

The prejudices against economically poorer students' abilities strikes me as similar to the prejudices we hold against K-12 students like the author once was. The author had one of these formidable challenges to overcome, but fortunately not both. Had the author been economically poor as well, I doubt he'd be the researcher and fine teacher he is, through both his intellectual power and personal example. What a tremendous loss that would have been. This book should go a long way in explaining what we know and don't yet know about the depth and breadth of human intelligence and achievement, how to maximize potential, and why we should never snuff out any student's dreams in service to our own preconceived notions about what's possible.

Engaging and well-researched book reconsiders how we measure and value intelligence

Ungifted traces the origins and impact of our current system of identifying children's gifts and disabilities, neatly contextualizing social, legal, and educational history. Also, it explores the research foundations of the tools we use to test kids in and out of the "labels" they need for public school education and civil rights-based services. This alone makes the book a must-read for any school psychologist or special educator, and well worth looking up any jargon if you are the parent of a child with any sorts of school struggles. Scott Barry Kaufman weaves his own remarkable story through the book. This is an engaging read given what could be heavy topics. By the time you reach the end you'll be well-prepared to dive into the new theory of intelligence that Kaufman neatly presents. This should be on the reading list of everyone who assesses, teaches or raises children.

The personal story became the most interesting part of the book, but like the research, I felt it lacked a conclusion or application. So you went from 'learning disabled' to PhD. How can this help others to avoid the same struggles? How can one education system get the best out of everyone?

About the Author
Samuel E. Wood received his doctorate from the University of Florida. He taught at West Virginia University and the University of Missouri—St. Louis and was a member of the doctoral faculty at both universities. From 1984 to 1996, he served as president of the Higher Education Center, a consortium of 14 colleges and universities in the St. Louis area. He was a cofounder of the Higher Education Cable TV channel (HEC-TV) in St. Louis and served as its president and CEO from its founding in 1987 until 1996. Dr. Wood passed away in 2008.

Ellen Green Wood received her doctorate in educational psychology from St. Louis University and was an adjunct professor of psychology at St. Louis Community College at Meramec. She has also taught in the clinical experiences program in education at Washington University and at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. In addition to her teaching, Dr. Wood has developed and taught seminars on critical thinking. She received the Telecourse Pioneer Award from 1982 through 1988 for her contributions to the field of distance learning.

Denise Boyd received her Ed.D. in educational psychology from the University of Houston and has been a psychology instructor in the Houston Community College system since 1988. From 1995 until 1998, she chaired the psychology, sociology, and anthropology department at Houston Community College—Central. She has coauthored three other Allyn and Bacon texts: with Helen Bee, Lifespan Development (Fourth Edition) and The Developing Child (Eleventh Edition); and with Genevieve Stevens, Current Readings in Lifespan Development. A licensed psychologist, she has presented a number of papers at professional meetings, reporting research in child, adolescent, and adult development. She has also presented workshops for teachers whose students range from preschool to college.

Together, Sam, Evie, and Denise have more than 45 years of experience teaching introductory psychology to thousands of students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The World of Psychology, Seventh Edition is the direct result of their teaching experience.

I read the entire book cover-to-cover

I enjoyed the book. I used it to pass the CLEP exam. The topics in this book were organized almost exactly how the College Board organized the CLEP exam.

With no prior knowledge, and only this textbook, which I read cover-to-cover in about two weeks.. I scored a 72 out of 80 on the CLEP exam and earned credit for introductory psychology.

Since the days of Adam Smith, Mercantilism has been a hotly debated issue. This book incorporates samples of material from the 1994 publication alongside new material, ordered in a new set of chapters and up-date discussions on mercantilism up to the present day.

Tracing the development of a particular political economy of Mercantilism in a period of nascent state making in Western and Continental Europe from the 16th to the 18th century, the book describes how European rulers regarded foreign trade and industrialisation as a means to achieve power and influence amidst international competition over trades and markets. Returning to debates concerning whether Mercantilism was a system of power or of wealth, Magnusson argues that it is in fact was both, and that contemporaries almost without exception saw these goals as interconnected. He also emphasises that Mercantilism was an all-European issue in a time of trade wars and the struggle for international power and recognition. In examining these issues, this book offers an unrivalled modern synthesis of Mercantilist ideas and practices.

I am now less perplexed

Who were the first and most important empiricists, what were their main ideas and how did they influence each other? These are the primary questions that this book seeks to answer. The author begins by introducing the early background of empiricism, which was in essence a revolt against Aristotelianism and the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas, which conjoined Aristotle and Christianity. Empiricists basically believe that knowledge is gained through sense experience rather than through abstract reasoning. It was fascinating to read how each of the empiricists covered thought that sense data was turned into actual knowledge. Some of their theorized systems may seem quaint and rudimentary to us, but in many ways they are not as off the mark as they may first appear, since in any case there seems to be a limit as to what neuroscience and biology can ultimately reveal about this process. Interestingly, Francis bacon had some insights which suggested some of the cognitive biases that have been demonstrated today by people like Daniel Kahneman. (Because these area of science can sometimes be so difficult to grasp, oddly enough I often find myself thinking that some of these writers apparently crude descriptions may "work" just as well.) The book is also a great history of philosophy as Rosenberg covers the different times in which each philosopher wrote and also connects each thinker with his peers, as appropriate.
