Excellent framework for EA that is further improved through this book.

The Pragmatic Enterprise Architecture (PEAF) developed by Kevin Lee Smith is a proven and increasingly used very effectively by enterprises across the world. This is the 3rd edition that has many small improvements and also placed within the larger and wider framework for enterprise transformations called POET (Pragmatic Ontology for Enterprise Transformation).
PEAF has many strengths and unique points of differentiation from other Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks. These include the explicit inclusion of organisation culture and its importance for EA, extensive coverage of the importance and impact of change on people from EA efforts, and above it is approachable, relatively simple to understand and extensively proven and increasingly used in organisations across the world. The book captures this and also educates through its use of example, clear descriptions, and explicit coverage of the usual objections and questions asked about EA.
The book would be improved by the use of diagram captions, larger easier to read diagrams and an index to encourage spontaneous usage.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in Enterprise Architecture and its use and value within any organisation. It is, as usual for Kevin Smith’s material, thought provoking, even if the extensive use of pastel colours is initially unusual for a book of this type!

A Necessary guide

Are you planning to go to graduate school? If you are, this is a necessary guide which gives you all the basics--from applying to graduation and beyond. One of the most important points is that you have to prepare for graduate school early. Don't wait until after you're accepted to choose your advisor. You shouldn't even apply until after you select your advisor. This point of advice saves a lot of heartache later on, because having a good relationship with your advisor is one of the single most important things in graduate school. If you have a suitable advisor, graduate school will go more smoothly.
Another thing I like is that it doesn't try to sugarcoat the graduate school experience. It tells you exactly that graduate school is a rough experience and that out of all the people who enter graduate programs, only 8% go on to academic work. If you can't face these facts, then you probably aren't driven enough to succeed in a graduate program. If you're still burning for higher education and are willing to face the difficulties involved, you're ready for graduate school. Basically you should go in with both eyes open. I recommend picking up this guide to help you through your postgraduate life.

Will This Book Give You What You Paid For?

As a current PhD student about to embark on the heavy matters required after coursework, several people have recommended Peters' book to me. Apparently a lot of academic heavyweights have noticed this book. But whether that influence is deserved in another story, because the book's supposed usefulness is either an anachronism or an idealization. Other reviewers have noted that the book is severely outdated, with its focus on the admissions environment and job market of the early 1990s, and especially its coverage of ancient software and databases. Granted, no author should be expected to see into the future, and such criticism is unreasonable. But this certainly has an impact on the book's true usefulness, as modern readers will find large portions to be a waste of time.

Regardless, this book deserves some more timeless criticism. For starters, Peters has written for the segment of graduate students who go straight through from a bachelor's program all the way to the PhD without ever leaving school. This is not the case for many grad students including myself, as I was a not-so-uncommon "returning" grad student after several years in the working world. But that phenomenon is glossed over in a mere three pages here, making much of the book nonsensical to a large percentage of its potential readership. During my master's program I was also irritated by academia's lack of concern for master's students in the face of PhD students - an unfortunate phenomenon that Peters generally repeats throughout this book. More generally, Peters' advice on managing time and stress, and navigating the job search process, are essentially the same as that found in any old self-help manual.

Peters' advice on more specific matters of grad school itself is usually more robust. But for every good piece of advice on evaluating potential thesis topics or preparing for an oral defense, there are tidbits of dubious practicality like finding potential advisors years before applying to a school, or joining Toastmasters for six months to practice public speaking; and occasional outright groaners like leaving your office light on all the time so professors think you're a real hard worker. Peters' thoughts on the grad school process overall are rather limited and one-sided, with a focus on ingratiating one's mentors to the point of dependency and taking an overly pessimistic (even bitter) view of degree requirements and the job market. Granted, I detected some good advice here about my own near-future requirements. But I found much of the book to be based on an academic atmosphere and environment that might be in Peters' experience but is much different than my own so far - and I'm sure I'm not that far out of the ordinary. Covers almost all the crucial topics

As a college professor, I am always on the lookout for a good source to help undergraduates who are contemplating getting a Ph.D. as well as to help graduate students succeed in their Ph.D. program. This book is one of the best in this genre I have come across. Although the author is a biologist, it is clear he has done his homework on other disciplines, and his advice is useful for graduate students in any field.
One of the most impressive features of the book is its comprehensive coverage. From improving one's credentials to get into a graduate program to getting a job once you have the Ph.D., Peters has detailed, entertaining advice for all the steps one encounters along the way. Liberally sprinkled through the book are anecdotes from students in a variety of fields that will leave most of us thankful that we did not have the Ph.D. advisors these poor hapless souls did.
Indeed, there were only two aspects I wish the book would have covered but it did not. First, there is no mention of handling coursework in a graduate program. This is probably because coursework and course grades are of much lower priority in graduate school than it is for the undergraduate degree, but I think Peters could have made this point and encouraged readers not to fall into the trap of spending more time on coursework than is warranted.
Second, I wish Peters had devoted more space to talking about getting academic jobs. College-level teaching is still the single most popular career goal for Ph.D.'s, and there are aspects of getting an academic job that are different than applying for jobs in the private sector. I wish he had written a separate chapter on academic jobs.
In a related vein, there was only one piece of advice that Peters give that I flat-out disagreed with, and that was his comment that teaching wastes time and that Ph.D. students should avoid teaching as much as possible. This is true for many Ph.D. students, but it is definitely NOT true for Ph.D. students desiring teaching jobs at 4-year, liberal arts colleges. Those jobs will want to see ample teaching experience, not just as a teaching assistant but also as sole instructor of a course. A student who does not have considerable teaching experience will not be competitive for those jobs, and because there are more of those jobs available than tenure track lines at research universities, taking Peters' advice on that score could be ultimately self-defeating.
However, those are the only negative comments I would make on an otherwise excellent book. I recommend it highly for anybody even contemplating going on beyond an undergraduate degree, and I plan to give copies of it to all my incoming graduate students.

Printed book is missing some pages

Haven't gotten deep into the book yet, but I did find that the printed version is missing pages 941-1036. I will be contacting the publisher, and yes I am aware of the chapters that are only available in the digital version. These missing pages include chapters 28 through 31. There are 47 chapters in the printed book, and these missing pages are basically in the middle. I would attach a picture, but I don't want to break copyright laws.

Severe printing errors in book text in chap 15

There are egregious printing errors in this book. Any book with such production errors in it cannot receive more than one star.

Starting at pg 437 in chap 15, there are double-printed pages up thru pg 468. The overprinting is from chaps. 17 & 18.

This is NOT acceptable in a book, especially a technical book. I will be requesting a refund from Sams.

Excellent, if it hadn't dropped chapters (and made some 'errors')

The book is excellent except for a few things.

1) There are chapters that were in the 2012 book but were dropped in this 2014 book.
For example, "There are no significant changes to Service Broker in SQL Server 2014 from what was available in SQL Server 2012 and this topic was deemed beyond the scope of this book. For more information on Service Broker, you can refer to the SQL Server 2014 Books Online reference of the SQL Server 2012 Unleashed book, which does include a chapter on Service Broker." (p18)
The 2012 chapter on Full-Text Search and Semantic Search has also been dropped from the 2014 book.

2) 'Errors'
After reading the first couple chapters, I skipped to the chapter on Linked Servers, and found 'errors'.
a) There is a table on page 504 that has no caption/description and does not pertain to the paragraph it follows.
b) On page 511 there is a table with no caption/description and it doesn't pertain to the anything on that page or the page before. (It appears to be, without any mention, supposed to be for something discussed on page 513).
c) Twice on page 505 we are told, "The following are the OLE DB providers delivered with SQL Server and the corresponding values for the provider_name argument:", but there is no list. Maybe this references back to the un-described table on page 504, but that may not be the case.

Aqiyl Aniys attained a BA in Organizational Behavior and Communications from NYU, and a certificate in plant based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. He started his plant based nutrition journey through the influence of Dr. Sebi’s African Bio Mineral Balance methodology and nutritional guide. His adoption of an alkaline vegan diet led to the reversal of disease in his body and revitalized him as a person. His middle aged body was transformed into the body of a twenty-year-old, which sustains his very active life. His revitalization led him to resume amateur boxing, and it supports his activities that include running, cycling, power walking, kick boxing and anything he challenges himself with. The level of impact the adoption of an alkaline plant based diet had on his life was unexpected and greatly welcomed. His journey led him to share his experiences and knowledge he gained to help others revitalize themselves. He developed the plant based nutrition website Natural Life Energy.com that provides scientifically supported articles on the benefits of various plant foods. He also wrote the book, The God-Awakening Diet which addresses the detrimental impact the reliance on a meat-centered diet has on the environment and the health of people. Basic and common sense, thats how I would describe this book, its about 100+ pages but you dont need a thousand pages to tell people to take apple cider vinegar and a bunch of things that are a waste but everyone is not the same, different strokes for different folks, but what I like about the book is that it keeps it simple and plain, basically prepare your own herbs and eat basic natural foods, and the word natural has been lost in the world, I know that the information in this book is very good because I been eating these foods and herbs for years and nothing but positive results, my most favorite in the book is the mixing of herbs to put in capsule form, its not a long book but by far the best if you really look at it an understand whats in it, this is a life keeper book here.

An excellent source of information to reclaim your health. I respect how close the author stuck to Dr. Sebi's teachings. I feel it was done in a brilliant way to avoid confusion for those who may be unfamiliar to Dr.Sebi. I highly recommend a purchase.

America was a new country in search of a national identity. Educated Americans desperately wished to meet European standards of culture and, at the same time, to develop a distinctly American literature and art. Tourism offered a means of defining America as a place and taking pride in the special features of its landscape. The country's magnificent natural wonders were a substitute for the cathedrals and monuments, the sense of history that Europe had built over the centuries. Moreover, Sears argues, tourist attractions like Mammoth Cave, Mount Auburn Cemetery, Yosemite, and Yellowstone functioned as sacred places for a nation with a diversity of religious sects and without ancient religious and national shrines. For nineteenth-century Americans, whose vision was shaped by the aesthetics of the sublime and the picturesque and by the popular nineteenth-century Romantic view of nature as temple, such places fulfilled their urgent need for cultural monuments and for places to visit which transcended ordinary reality.

But these nineteenth-century tourist attractions were also arenas of consumption. Niagara Falls was the most sublime of God's creations, a sacred place, which, like Mount Auburn Cemetery, was supposed to have a profound moral effect on the spectator. But it was also an emporium of culture where the tourist shopped for Niagara's wonders and for little replicas of the Falls in the form of souvenirs. In Sacred Places, Sears describes how this strange, sometimes amusing, juxtaposition of the mythic and the trivial, the sacred and the profane, the spiritual and the commercial remained a significant feature of American tourist attractions even after efforts were made at Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Niagara Falls to curb commercial and industrial intrusions.

Sears also explores how the nineteenth-century idealization of home stimulated the tourists' response to such places as the Willey House in the White Mountains, the rural cemeteries, and even the newly established asylums for the deaf, dumb, blind, and insane. And, in an intriguing account of Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania, he examines the reasons why an important nineteenth-century anthracite transportation center was also a major tourist attraction.

Most of the attractions discussed in this book are still visited by millions of Americans. By illuminating their cultural meaning, Sacred Places prompts us to reflect on our own motivations and responses as tourists and reveals why tourism was and still is such an important part of American life.

Enjoyable, but limited in scope

Sears argues that 19th century American tourist attractions tended to be secular places sanctified by natural sublimity and nationalistic idealism in which the nation was symbolized by natural grandeur or American ingenuity. This history is extremely easy and enjoyable to read, as well as academically well-informed and researched. It does, however, present a very limited view of American tourism, focusing only on sublime landscapes, with only passing mention of resorts and a complete lack of awareness of 19th century historical site tourism.

The best reference book for writing specifications - but it could be a little bit better.

Originally I purchased this for preparation for CSI's Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) exam. Unlike most books I've purchased in my life for exam prep purposes, I kept this one after the exam because it's the best reference source I've found for all issues associated with writing specs.

For the exam prep purposes: This book is pretty comprehensive, and certainly the primary source for the exam, but I was a bit annoyed to find that it does not cover some specifications-related topics that are on the exam, so it was still necessary to review parts of CSI's "Project Resource Manual", in addition to this book. It seems to me that CSI would make sure that all critical information related to specifications would be in their specifications book - but some items that are in the PRM aren't in this Construction Specifications Practice Guide. The PRM is the book that the CDT exam is based on, and since that exam is a pre-requisite for taking the CCS I would expect that most people studying for the CCS would also have that book. If not, you may want to get that one too. If you're studying for the CCS exam, it's not that you need to re-read the entire several hundred page PRM, but I'd recommend keyword searching the PRM for the words "specifications", "specifier", etc. - because there were certain items that arose on the exam that were addressed by that book but not by the Construction Specifications Practice Guide.

I'd recommend skipping around in this book when you study for the CCS exam. To do well on the exam you really need to be fluent in the material of all of the chapters of the book. Unfortunately the book is more heavy-handed and repetitive in the early chapters, which can bog down your studying and may delay you from getting around to the later chapters and having time to study them thoroughly. If you have limited time to study, and you've already got a solid understanding already of the basics (things like the differences between performance specs and proprietary specs, open and closed proprietary specs, understanding of delegated design, etc.) then I'd suggest just skimming those chapters, moving on to the later chapters (like specs for federal projects, insurance, and purchasing goods) because they're just as important for the exam.

For office reference purposes: This is an excellent book to use in developing a firm's specifications templates, and defining office procedures. The chapter on language is one that I've tried to disseminate to my whole office, for a broader understanding of appropriate terms and punctuation in specifications and drawing notes, ambiguous words to avoid, imperative sentence structure, etc.
Again it's not quite as comprehensive as it could be - occasionally I find myself looking for spec-related CSI recommendations that I know I've read before, only to find that the item I'm searching for isn't covered in this book at all but is in the PRM or some other CSI publication.
What I'd like to see CSI do is search all of their publications for all content related to specifications and make sure that ALL of it gets into this Construction Specifications Practice Guide.
