Could have been titled Investment for idiots if that wasn't already taken...

The hardest thing about this book was figuring out what was dated and what was current. Things like AOL being cutting edge with stock quotes updated every 15 minutes are obvious, but some of the other things a little less so. However, as an investment newbie, this book was great as it explains things as if they don't expect me to have any previous knowledge. Things like the dogs of the DOW, and how to read a balance sheet, etc. And everything is backed by data showing the results, and the importance of comparing to a baseline such as the S&P 500 over the same period of time.

An interesting but somewhat "fluffy" book about investing

I picked this up because I'd heard that these brothers had written a very interesting and irreverent book and website about investing and money. Basically the book is devided into three parts. The first talks about their "Dow Divident" strategy. Actually, they do give credit to others for coming up with the idea, but add some new tweaks to make it supposedly more profitable. They claim this is a very easy and safe way to invest because you are dealing with only 4 stocks which you will have to change at most once a year and which are all Dow stocks, so they are all large well-established companies that won't go broke any time soon. They claim that this technique would have netted the invester an average of 25% annual growth of the last 25 years, and 19% over the last 38 years, both well above the 10.5% that the market (S&P Index) would have given. They then go on to talk about a way to outdo even this growth by investing in small caps and in shorting stocks. So the 2nd third is about small caps and how to research them, how to read financial statements, how to understand trends, etc. The third section is on shorting stocks. Apparently if you put your money into each of these three philosophies in a certain ratio, you maximize your profits and minimize risk. However, they want you that if you don't have a lot of free time, you should just do the Dow Dividend approach as the other two can eat away a good deal of time and energy. I thought the first section of the book could have been written in about 10 pages, instead of the 100 or so that it took the Gardner brothers. Not only do they go on and on about hypothetical examples, but they also write about what they're about to write about. It's just very repetitive. Perhaps they were trying to be entertaining and trying to ease the complete novice into things, but unless you don't even know the very basics of what stocks are, you will probably get as annoyed with this part of the book as I was. The second part picks up the pace and gets into the nitty-gritty much more so in this sense it's actually useful if you want to make investing a hobby.

informative, if somewhat opinionated

This was the first book I read on picking stocks, and I still refer to it occasionally. It contains some very good information on how to evaluate companies. Some of this information has since been updated on the Motley Fool website, and continues to be. That's one thing I like about their outlook: they are willing to change their approach as they continue to learn. On the downside, I find that they completely rule out some very worthwhile aspects of investing as being worthless. For instance, they have a section in the back of the book which practically compares technical analysis (chart reading) to snake oil. Although I personally would not pick a stock only on the basis of its chart, I must allow that charts help us pick good entry and exit points, and provide other pertinent information as well. One of my favorite investment authors, John Murphy, has an entire book on technical analysis. I regard him as a scholar and a very astute thinker who would never dabble in snake oil.....with resources like Murphy's books out there I can't understand TMF's cavalier dismissal of the entire field. They similarly denigrate the entire field of options and futures, which I think perhaps shows a lack of understanding on their part. Aside from these criticisms, however, I recommend this book as a very good primer on how to evaluate a company you are thinking about investing in.

Jean-Claude Mezieres and Pierre Christin created ValerianA" in 1967 after working in the USA together, one as a cowboy, the other a teacher. First of this classic franco-belgium sf series

This volume is the first of the "Valerian" series (here called "Valerian and Laureline"), a classic and long running franco-belgium science fiction series. This series is credits with influencing several prominent science fiction movies.

Valerian and Laureline are spatio-temporal agents for the future earth empire Galaxity. They can travel in space and time from the 28th century. Valerian is an agent from that time, whereas Laureline is actually a peasant girl from the 14th century who joined him. In this story, they must travel back in time to 1986 New York in pursuit of a criminal from their time. Earth at that time was devastated by a nuclear war (the album was originally published in 1970, so this was the "future" for them). V&L know that Earth will rebuild, so they avoid messing with the past, but are successful with their mission.

Cinebooks plans on reprinted the whole series, many for the first time in English, like this album, at a rate of about 2 per year. I look forward to them, as I've only gotten the prior 8 of the albums that have been reprinted in the US. I wish they would also reprint the actual first album, "Bad Dreams" that comes before this one, that shows how Laureline joins Valerian.

Fantastic looking comics

Fantastic looking comics. The translation does seem to be a little plain or uninspired, but I assume they're pretty straight forward. A really fun looks at 60s Sci-Fi in the vein of STAR WARS and DOCTOR WHO, but that is more likely to have influenced those franchises than to be influenced by them.

Beginning of a great adventure

THE CITY OF SHIFTING WATERS by Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Christin is not the greatest science-fiction comic book ever. But it is the beginning of what is one of the most influential, entertaining and long-lasting sci-fi comic books. Ever.

The cartoonish illustration style of Mézières, in the European tradition, has been a problem for those attempting to break into the superhero-saturated U.S. market. But given the recent interest and popularity in the more fluid and expressive illustration styles of the likes of Darwyn Cooke or Jordi Bernet, it might finally be the right time for appreciating the mastery of the nonrealistic line.

Writer Christin, whose later collaborations with Enki Bilal and Jacques Tardi are equally noteworthy, is still learning his craft here. There are a couple of long expository sequences, the characters whose Hawksian banter would soon move to a much higher level of sophistication are now there more to just set off the scenery, and it’s all a bit messy.

Yet some of the concepts are already potent, like a scene where we have flood victims cursing our heroes for not helping them while they stand on the roofs of their devastated homes. He would in future books sharply comment on issues like colonialism or imperialism, but always in a manner that distinguishes an artist from a pompous fool — it enhances the story, gives it weight, but never preaches or takes over.

In the end, any minor issues I have with this book are at most inconveniences. THE CITY OF SHIFTING WATERS is overboiling with iconic images — many of them original, some of which are riffs on older ideas — all crammed into a superb adventure that is still only a modest beginning to one of the finest science-fiction comic books ever created.

Very grateful for this book . . .

I am really thankful for this book. I ordered it last January, after getting over the flu for the second year in a row. My immune system seemed shot, and I knew I needed to make a serious change. I researched candida, then I researched books and I went with this one. It really spells everything out for you and gives good explanations. As with any change, the diet changes and supplements were overwhelming at first. So, just in case it is useful for anyone getting started, the suggested supplements that I went with were:
(Chapter 7, 90 day program)
1. Herbal Antifungal - I went with pau d'arco (Gaia tincture; Vitamin Shoppe or Nature's Way tablets when out) because of a ginger allergy, so I was limited. There are other options in the book.
2. Repair-Vite (herbs and amino acids to repair intestinal tract) - I substituted with BioGenesis Intestinal Repair Complex (iherb.com), mentioned later in the book. (Now, almost a year later, I take Jarrow L-glutamine morning and night and some of the other ingredients in the repair formula)
3. Vitamin C: I used Metagenics Ultra Potent-C 1000 tablets but I noticed some ingredients that I didn't like recently.
4. I used Gaia Milk Thistle seed extract instead of the Gallblader or Liver abX
5. Vitamin E: Jarrow familE. The recommended Country Life Chelated molybdenum really worked to eliminate naseau from this supplement.
6. Digestive Enzymes: Couldn't find one that made a big difference for me. I've heard great things about Enzymedica Digest Gold from other people.
7. Flaxseed: Bob's Red Mill as recommended
8. Red Clover Tea: ordered in bulk from the Mountain Rose Herbs website as recommended. Very happy with it and I continue to order the Red Clover and other teas from them.
9. Molybdenum : Country Life Chelated molybdenum: alleviates die-off systems. I thought this supplement was very good.

So, that's what I used to get started as far as the supplements go and I went through them in this review in the hope that it might simplify things for someone else. When I first got started, the die-off symptoms were severe and definitely made me feel worse, but were very temporary - a week or less. As expected, I was very tired, achy, had severe carb cravings, and had a sore throat (and I'm sure more symptoms, this is what I remember from almost a year ago). Strangely, every time I ate for a while (at least a month), I would have a little bit of a sore throat. But, it was definitely worth it as my symptoms have improved greatly and my whole relationship with food has changed for the better. As for the noticeable improvements that I have experienced -- I get sick less and if I do get sick I get over it more quickly; less tired; my weight used to fluctuate, this isn't the case anymore and I am steady at an ideal weight; I don't get as bloated or exhausted as pms symptoms; sinus symptoms have improved, and many other improvements that I am not thinking of now.

I had a lot of reservations going into this diet because I loved food, baking and eating out so much -- it was what I looked forward to the most. Now, I am not a slave to food like I used to be and my dietary preferences and habits have changed. (Just as an aside, I still bake using a lot of paleo recipes and ideas, minus the added sweetener, and I like it even more than I used to like conventional baking). Also, in case it is helpful, I found a lot of great candida diet friendly recipes from Paleo cookbooks - Against All Grain (see blog), Practical Paleo, the nom nom paleo blog, countless others, as well as from the conventional sites I always used.

So, if you've gone through the trouble of reading my really long review, you're probably at the point where you are seriously considering taking the plunge, and probably NEED to take this plunge and follow this program. My advice, commit to it mentally and do it. You do have the will power - sugar (and wheat) are an addiction, we all experience it, the initial transition will not be easy but you can absolutely get through it and it really will be MUCH EASIER from then on out. Also, as I'm believe other reviewers have mentioned, its best to do this on your own. Also, you may encounter resistance from people close to you that have good intentions. Its threatening to people when you go against convention (conventional diet) -- labeling it as a "temporary detox" might make other people more comfortable with it and less judgmental. I will probably NOT be able to complete 90-day program from the start; I will have to take her option to slowly remove things from my diet. But her approach is balanced. She says to take ONE anti-fungal and lists several. I now take caprylic acid supplements and occasionally drink Pau d'Arco tea. In other words, she's not advancing a period of excess to see a quick response, but change over time and a plan for maintenance. A lot of what she recommends here is good nutrition. . . eat some types of grains but forego the ones that turn to sugar and are highly processed. But she explains why these recommendations apply to the growth of candida. What helped me the most were two things: her explanation of food combining is one of those. Having lost my gall bladder and now having to eat moderate to low fat foods, there was a risk for me of too many refined or starchy carbohydrates. She does not recommend removing carbohydrates completely, and sure, we all know that refined carbohydrates affect insulin levels; she explains why the good carbs are good. But I was about to pay $40 for a food-combining program, and now don't have to because she summed it up in one paragraph. She also says that your body asks for what it needs, and I am a firm believer in that. It also craves refined carbohydrates and sugars when your blood sugar surges low or high. I've learned to recognize a good craving from a bad one. She doesn't just say "eat this, don't eat that," but explains the mechanisms. I personally love legumes and beans, and never understood why the Atkins diet, which was successful for me when I had a gall bladder, limited beans, but she explains that even while legumes are high in protein, the carbohydrates in them are starches, and have the effect of refined carbohydrates. So now they are treats, once or twice a week. She also explains when and how often to eat fruit. So she just doesn't say what to leave out and what to leave in, but why, and her structure helps create moderation, so you don't feel deprived but you're not limited to just a handful of food groups. I now know I can eat brown rice, when in the past I thought that was off limits. The second thing that is helpful are the recipes. I tried one last night - spicy chicken and cabbage soup. It is a little bit more expensive for me when shopping to buy the things I need to make these recipes, but part of that was a re-stock of my cabinets; I eat at work and often plunk down $7 for a sandwich and chips and a cookie and a diet soda . . . most of which is feeding the candida. If I stop shelling out for fast food and spend my money on good food and prepare to take food with me to work, I'm sure the net effect on my budget will be the same. If you LIKE explanations for the consequences to your body of what you put into it, and WHY nutritionists recommend some foods and suggest eliminating or limiting others, this is your book.

Just a good diet

My wife and I purchased this book and followed the recipes for 9 months and here is what I found.
1. I lost 41 pounds.
2. My blood pressure went down from 145 over 95 to 127 over 70.
3. The food was great, I enjoyed every meal and the snacks too.
4. At 76 I worked up to 2 to 5 mile walks almost every day.
5. I used the complex gym occasionally.
6. I looked better and felt better.
7. The book offers lot of useful nutritional guidance even if you don't use the strict recipes
Now for the bad news:
8. This is an expensive diet, slightly over $245 a week, for the two of us.
9. We shopped at Whole Foods (health food grocery story) Reasors (a better than average grocery store) and Wal-Mart to buy all the ingredients each week.
Comment:
Even with the last two negatives this is a wonderful and healthy diet. I had forgotten what fresh, chemical free food tasted like.

Too "Trendy" or Not Another Corporate Branding "How To" Design Book?

But this one is about freedom. Yes, freedom of thought, freedom of style, freedom of exploration and paradigm breaking. There are tons of logo and corporate branding books out there but this book series stands out. Presented collections of logos are hip, crude and sometimes provocative. The book celebrates graphics design as it is rather then doing something permanent. It aims at the everyday design: logos for an exhibition, a local retail or online radio station.

Content of the book is divided into categories, which are: Corporate, Culture, Design, Fashion, Motion/ Games/ Media, Music, Art/ Unclassifiable, Political and Sports. Although it could be even better if there were some details on presented graphics, because it is not obvious where is real logos, concepts, presentations or just random graphics as they scattered all together.

Such a wide range of current creativity is a great place to begin your new graphic project and to get you thinking in a variety of ways. This is a great brainstorming tool. The variety of styles helps promote new ideas and concepts. The format of the book is also working on its usability. It is bound and stitched with thick hardboard cover and has a top printing quality. This book was made to be used long time.

If you haven't got any book on logo design yet, then it will be a great to start with. But if you are in search of a breakdowns of logo designs with deep case studies, as I mentioned before, this one is not a "how to" book.

If you are looking for heaps of ideas for type, logos, vector illustrations, and inspiration, then this book is it. Its pretty funky, with heaps of ideas for your own designs whether it be corporate or surf and skate. Its fun just flicking through it.

Great for nursing students... and nurses who work with infectious diseases

this book is GREAT! It is very informative by providing case studies for all of the diseases within the book. The case studies really help you to narrow in on what signs and symptoms the patient may show. This book also shows x-rays and pictures of the disease with the case studies and explains each of them. After the case study the book will give a question and then give an in-depth answer to it. At the end of the disease section there is a short quiz. This book has helped me on so many different infectious diseases in nursing school to really help me apply the theoritcal knowledge! It also has me interested in becoming an infectious disease nurse!

Large, easy to read, and full of pictures.

This book might be too technical for someone without a background in immunology. It was the recommended textbook for a graduate class I'm taking. It has forty chapters and each chapter is a different infectious disease. Each chapter starts with a small case study and then it explains the disease step by step. It tells you the microorganism, how it damages the body, how the body responds, possible symptoms and complications, treatment and prevention. Nurses will get minimal use out of this book as they do not treat, diagnose, nor test for pathogens. But Medical students and Microbiology students will want to keep this on their shelf. The book also comes with an online glossary available at the publishers website, unfortunately not all the words they claim to be in the glossary are (but most are and with Google you can find the rest). Each chapter also has a summary for those who are too lazy to study and a few end questions to see if you understood the topic.

This book did not satisfy my need of getting a quick necessary information to get on with essential functions of a primary care physician.It is written for a person who already knows the field very clearly but it would confuse a novice in the field.

There will be peak oil costing gas more every year for years.

Even with short lived fracking, there will be peak oil with more demand and less production in not many years.= more $ per gallon going up.
Large trucks, trains, planes, and ships cannot run on batteries, and electricity to run them is difficult, expensive and often impossible.

Although this stunning work is structured in chapters ranging from canap?s to desserts, to consider it merely a "cookbook" would be to trivialize its content and impact. The French Laundry (in Yountville, CA) is one of the most important restaurants in the United States, and owner Keller is an articulate chef with culinary principles. His philosophy: the palate gets weary, so small and often exotic courses should be designed to maximize the experience of each flavor and texture. He defends tradition, e.g., chickens must be trussed, and yet each recipe is startlingly original. Although this is a complex book for the average busy person--Keller advises: "Take your time. Take a long time"--there are also fairly simple dishes. Epitomizing a love of ingredients (there is a resource guide to esoterica) and an almost magical approach to food, this is required for any real "cookbook" collection.

Excellent cook book, but not for the average home cook

This is an excellent cook book with some delicious recipes, and great insight into the mind of one of the greatest chefs in the world. It talks about all the different aspects of professional cooking, from preparation to taste, to plating and appearance, to portion size and more. Every recipe is directly from Thomas Keller's restaurant The French Laundry (owner of 3 Michelin stars), which the book got it's name from. The book is in the collection of just about every successful chef, and for that it receives 4 stars. However, it is not for the average home cook. This book is aimed directly at professional chefs. It says that all the recipes in it were tested in home kitchens, but I wouldn't recommend this book if you don't have at least a semi-extensive culinary knowledge. A lot of the ingredients aren't just at any grocery store, and some are very expensive. A lot of the procedures require skills that take practice to acquire. If you're not sure about it I suggest going to a book store and checking it out first, or if you're a Kindle member maybe they have a sample.

Pretty. Lovely photography. Good reading, Zen-like. just the thing for a Sunday afternoon browse or to place on a coffee table for guests. *Not* terribly useful. If you want to read the story about how chef Keller got his ideas and motivation for dishes, then by all means buy this book. There are more 'utilitarian' french cookbooks with excellent dishes available, such as Greenspans etc., that oh, for example say, have an index.

Beautiful cookbook

This is a beautiful cookbook. I had the chance to eat at the French Laundry about 10 or 12 years ago and it was a wonderful experience (I don't think I could afford it now, so glad I went when I did). Absolutely delicious and beautiful dishes and so I got this book with a bit of nostalgia. The pictures are lovely and inspirational. I admit that I have not tried any of the recipes, but having looked through them I am not sure I will. The recipes seem overly complicated and many seem incomplete, such as missing steps or lacking detail on how to achieve the desired results. When I have more time, I will try out a recipe or two, but this will not be a "go-to" book for me because of how overly complicated the dishes are and how many key details seem to be lacking.
