Por Raffa TOP 500 COMENTARISTAS en 19 de abril de 2014La edición es modesta, pero con gusto. Las tapas blandas tienen un color verde lima muy agradable. Desde un punto de vista meramente estético, el libro queda muy bien en la estantería. La tipografía no es como la que encontramos en una obra maquetada por una gran editorial, es casi más un cuadernillo encuadernado que trata de aprovechar cada hoja; pero resulta perfectamente adecuado en tamaño y claridad para leerse y disfrutarse. No debe suponer esto ningún temor para el lector.

Sad but beautiful literary rendition about the lives a puerto rican campesino workers community in the mountains. You get mesmerized by interesting but real characters. Enphasis is on poverty, women's lack of power and abuse by males, oppression by the powerful and savvy in the middle of beautiful natural paisajes.

Disfrute mucho la lectura por segunda vez, luego de 30 a~os. Muestra una realidad cruel en la que
vivio nuestro jibaro puertorriqueno.

A classic of Puerto Rican literature

This is a classic of Puerto Rican literature, giving you a glimpse of "jíbaro" life in the late 1800's. It's an interesting study in social class. It's also easy to read, if you read Spanish. I'm really enjoying re-reading the classics that I read back in high school, but with an adult perspective.

Highly Recommend This Book!

What a great book! Only disappointed I didn't pick it up sooner.

I've been training for a while, but decided to try out this routine because I needed a change, I've never actually done a full body workout (Flex magazine was my teacher in my young days...*sigh*), and they incorporate compound movements so I knew the program would be effective. That said, I LOVE the results I'm getting doing this routine.

My diet is already clean - and pretty much follows the one written. Anyone serious about getting results should be able to follow something similar. (I consider coconut oil a good fat).

This is the PERFECT book for anyone who wants to learn the proper exercise technique/form. The information is clear, the pictures are excellent and if you decide to do the routine, everything is clearly referenced so it's easy to flip to that page if you don't know how do to the exercise. They also have youtube videos of how to do the exercises, and from their facebook page James and Hugo are very responsive to anyone who needs help, etc.

Two things I don't like about this book:
- the cover, why does she not have anything on? seriously though, who wants to walk around with that
- the first routine has squats at the end - not sure the reasoning behind this, but I always do my compound movements first

(I received my answer from Hugo himself: In regards to the squats, it is good to sometimes have compound exercises at the end as in this manner you shock the body and you get faster results.) I will be trying it this way :)

Highly recommend this book (did I already mention that?)

Love this program.. can be done in your living room

I just started the first breaking in workout today and I really enjoyed it. I was able to do the program and I feel worked out adequately. I am an obese woman so that if I can do the program pretty much anyone can do the program if you can stand and get a few dumbbells. It is really good because the program is fun and it requires so little equipment that it can be done in your living room. No gym is required. This book has really helped me see how to train at home so I will not be injured and also so I will make gains. I did not know before reading this book that giant sets were extremely difficult and should be used for short periods of time. I had heard that it was better to do one thing after the other if you are trying to lose weight.

Each chapter has a topic. There are introductory chapters to the program, a mental preparation chapter, training chapter, nutrition chapter, rest and recovery chapter, exercise chapter, and the programs are at the end of the book. It looks like the programs will take you from beginner to advanced and beyond. There is a lot of good advice and it is given in a friendly manner. Some of it is hard to hear but the tone is not too overbearing or judgmental. They gave a program that lowers burnout as well. I tend to rush into exercise and then get hurt and burn out. With this I should not. The programs advance at a nice slow pace and begin at the very beginning.

The problem with the book is that some of the information sounds a bit dated. Also, the abs information is pretty limited. I tend to hurt myself doing abs so I would like to know how to get them stronger when they are very weak and tend to lead to injury. I am looking forward to achieving some good results.

Oh, and some fitness professionals claim that women do not need to train any differently than men. I don't think that is true. Men do not tend to get cellulite and they want muscular upper bodies and tend to care less about their legs and butt. Women tend to be the opposite. They want a little muscle in their arms, shoulders, and chest and a very strong, firm, cellulite free lower body.

While I do like this book and have found good information within its pages, I feel that the Kindle version is not that great. Each workout spans four-five pages, which makes it hard to read and navigate, let alone do when you're trying to go through the workout. It's hard to focus on your workout when you have to keep scrolling. To me, they should create an app that is mobile friendly and can be a quick reference guide for when you are working out.

About the Author

Donatella Della Porta is Professor of Sociology at the European University Institute, where she directs the Center on Social Movement Studies (Cosmos). She is also directs a major ERC project Mobilizing for Democracy, on civil society participation in democratization processes in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. Among her very recent publications are: Methodological Practices in Social Movement Research (Oxford University Press, 2014), Spreading Protest (ECPR Press 2014, with Alice Mattoni), Participatory Democracy in Southern Europe (Rowman and Littlefield, 2014, with Joan Font and Yves Sintomer), Mobilizing for Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2014), and Can Democracy be Saved? (Polity Press, 2013). In 2011, she was the recipient of the Mattei Dogan Prize for distinguished achievements in the field of political sociology.

Mario Diani is Professor of Sociology at the University of Trento, and ICREA Research Professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. His research focuses primarily on social movements, collective action, and political networks. Publications include The Cement of Civil Society: Studying Networks in Localities (Cambridge University Press, 2015), Social Movements (with Donatella della Porta, Blackwell, 2006), and Social Movements and Networks (co-edited with Doug McAdam, Oxford University Press, 2003), as well as articles in leading journals such as American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology and Social Networks. He was European Editor of Mobilization from 1997-2005 and a board member of INSNA-International Network for Social Network Analysis from 2010-2013.

A Simple but Comprehensive Guide to Ancient Chinese Medicine

Ted Kaptchuk has distilled the essence of ancient Chinese medicine in this clear expose. He explains the body organs as they were understood by the ancient Chinese, the acupuncture points and meridians, the fluids and flows, both of energy and fluids, in easy-to-understand language. A+ for clarifying the concepts of this medicine. With some imagination you may even begin to understand how such an ancient art could tackle modern challenges like AIDS and cancer, which it does. This book is a classic that will be around for a long time. The nice thing about it is that it clarifies ancient Chinese medicine to a person with no background in the subject.

Love this book!

Love this book! First of all let's set the record straight, once again. This is G.K. (Kenneth's wife).
This book has become one of my staples, lately. Nothing short of five stars, for sure. Not for everybody either. I have been into alternative medicine for quite some time, therefore, I fully understand these concepts. Unless you are a healer, a self-healer, an alternative medicine practitioner, or someone in the alternative healing/medicine field, I would not recommend it otherwise. Extremely informative, poetic in some ways, this book gently navigates you into the alternative fields of the Traditional Chinese medicine. It is quite a "work of art", I simply love it!

Excellent beginning for Oriental Medicine

I realize enthusiasm among reviewers for this text varies greatly. In the absence of identifying specific flaws, what we write may say more about us at the moment of our reading, than it says the about the text. However, I am personally skeptical about any review written by someone who did not bother to complete the book!!!

I had the first edition and admit I did not finish it. That was nearly 2 decades ago. I am not sure whether it was too far a stretch from my western graduate school and medical school education...or that I was just too busy to devote sufficient time and attention combined with an open mind.

I now have the 2000 edition. I intentionally approached this time with an open and curious mind -- looking for the bridges between eastern and western concepts of health and illness. Instead of rushing through to condense it into logical, highlighted memory bites, I simply let it wash over me. And during this time I attempted to let my western concepts of how the body works float in a suspended state to be retrieved and integrated at a later time.

I found that it provides a detailed but very readable "sky-view" of oriental medicine. It is not intended to provide specific treatment or diagnostic recommendations for an individual patient. Rather it builds the concepts upon which these later efforts can be refined. When you can see the bird's eye view of the terrain from above, its easier to see how cities, trees and rivers relate to each other and then draw your own map.

Reading from this perspective I truly enjoyed the book, its artistry and the holistic, natural metaphors connecting the microcosm of the body with the greater world and universe in which we exist. Refreshing!!!

I found it to be a wonderful invitation into the world of eastern medicine, whetting a respectful longing to learn more. I'm probably glad I lost the first edition and started over with the newer one.

This book is a tour de force in MSK ultrasound. The authors comprehensively cover this expanding area of a technically driven field. Logically presented with multiple diagrams and images. Easy to read and well referenced. The normal anatomical section prior to pathology presentation prepares the reader for comparision between normal and abnormal imaging. This manual must be considered the gold standard reference. A must for those who have an interest in sono-anatomy, rehabilitaitve ultrasound imaging and through to the Diagnostic ultrasound imaging sonographer or radiologist. Consider this a must for ultrasound imaging

La Cucina "Sfiziosa" della Sophia Loren!

Beauty is the theme that runs through "Sophia Loren's Recipes & Memories." The beauty of Italy, whether it be Genoa or Naples, and the beauty of Ms. Loren, and her family, and friends, shine in this wonderful cookbook. It is a Latin custom to share food, recipes, memories, stories, and smiles when one is in la cucina. Ms. Loren is a very down-to-earth cook, and she invites you into her kitchen to share her recipes and memories. She wants to confide the "piccoli secreti" ("little secrets") of her table, her cooking, and her kitchen. She shows treasured photos and her famous zest for life; to her, "family is sacred."
These recipes are authentic. I have tested several of them and find them to be excellent. The recipes are minimalist and leave plenty of room for improvisation, so you can substitute seasonal fresh ingredients or add your own version of a dish to hers. Although this cookbook has meat and meatless recipes, I have found that many of the traditional meat-based recipes may be adapted for a vegetarian without much fuss. Most of the recipes have full-color pictures, with beautiful food styling.
Many of the recipes reflect Ms. Loren's Neapolitan heritage. She offers "Ragù alla Napoletana" (Neapolitan Stuffed Beef Rolls and Sauce), which is a classic meal for Sunday family dinners. The making of the ragù, or sauce, is a ritual in the Italian kitchen. For vegetarians, there are two wonderful recipes: "Spaghetti con Salsa al Pomodoro Semplice" (Spaghetti with Basic Tomato Sauce) and "Spaghetti con Pomodoro Crudo" (Spaghetti with Uncooked Tomato Sauce.)
This cookbook offers recipes and guidelines for preparing everything from Antipasti to Dolci. One can use this book to make an authentic Italian dinner, with all the courses, from start-to-finish. Here is one of my favorite meals for casual entertaining, with recipes taken from Ms. Loren's book: Antipasti ("Melone e Prosciutto" e "Bruschetta"); Zuppa ("Il Minestrone"); Il primo ("Linguine con Salsa Sophia"); Il secondo ("Agnello Bella Napoli"); Dolce ("Torte di Ricotta.")
While Ms. Loren's cookbook does favor Neapolitan specialities, such as pizza, baccalà, and tirami-sù, she also offers classic recipes from Rome, Genoa, and Sicily.
"La cucina sfiziosa" is "the whimsy kitchen." "Sfizioso, -a" is a colorful Neapolitan word that Ms. Loren defines on page 178 as ". . . that little extra touch that takes a dish beyond its traditional form and adds a hint of fancy, sparking the curiosity and satisfying the most difficult palate."

The book is filled with loads of recipes for the novice as well as a seasoned cook. I am a vegetarian and I found many recipes that meet my requirements. There is a large variety of recipes, most of which you could serve to your family or to company. The pictures and info on Sophia over the years is a bonus. ABSOLUTLY BEAUTIFUL

This book is wonderful. The photos alone are worth the money. I own a small restaurant / lounge called, Hunter's ROADHOUSE and on Fridays I like to run a special from a famous person or chef. I have made several from this book. I get rave reviews on Sophia's, Baked pasta, meat & tomatoes. I have not had one complaint on any of her recipes. My Father loved her and so do I. About the Author

Bruno Simma is a Judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. He was formerly Professor of International Law and European Community Law and Director of the Institute of International Law at the University of Munich and Professor of Law at the University of Michigan.

Daniel-Erasmus Khan is Professor of Public International Law at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich.

Georg Nolte is Professor of Public International Law at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Andreas Paulus is a Judge at Germany's constitutional court. He was formerly Professor of Public and International Law at the University of Gottingen and co-director of its Institute of International and European Law.

A CUP HALF EMPTY, OR HALF FULL?

In the compilation and editing of this scholarly two-volume work, published by the Oxford University Press, the learned editors state that their central objective is to prepare a commentary on the United Nations which tells its story `as faithfully as possible.'

Referencing the subtitle, the Commentary is the joint product of the work of no less than seventy-four authors, approximately two-thirds of whom, interestingly, hail from German universities and institutions, with much of the team effort ably coordinated by Assistant Editor Nikolai Wessendorf.

If you as a lawyer, academic, journalist or researcher ever find yourself in some kind of controversy, dispute, debacle or debate regarding the U.N. and/or the Charter of that body, this is the work of reference to which to turn.

As most people would agree, the aim of the UN is to promulgate and maintain world peace. On any number of occasions it appears to have failed in that attempt (as the `cup half-empty' brigade would noisily remind you) - largely because of the limitations of its charter. But that in no way diminishes its value. Indeed the world community of nations would be diminished without it. But here we take the relentlessly optimistic `cup half-full' view, which we believe this formidable work of reference engenders.

Copiously footnoted and indexed, it is indeed a mine of reference resources for scholars and researchers and certainly specialists in the field of international law. Volume I, for example provides over 100 pages of Tables of Cases and Tables of Instruments -- and with some thirteen pages of abbreviations, you're unlikely to be confused by a UN-generated acronym ever again.

From this point on, the books follow the charter itself, its drafting history, reforms and interpretation -- and following that, the Statute of the International Court of Justice. One might have thought that interpreting the Charter would not present that much difficulty, for it does set out the principles of the organisation with a force and clarity which is almost touching. It is the way in which these principles are applied in the grim reality of conflict which causes the problems and the dissent.

Note, for example, the declaration in San Francisco of June 26 1945 with which the Charter begins: WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women... and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.'
It goes on from there, and you can't argue with any of that, can you - except that, unfortunately for world peace - so many individuals and nations can and do.
Nonetheless, the UN remains and idea and an ideal to which, let's hope, more nations will aspire in the fullness of time.

From high flying legal eagles and academics to humble students commencing their studies in international affairs, these erudite, authoritative, yet easily navigable volumes should be deemed indispensable.
