As he watches his energetic father grow weaker from the effects of inoperable bowel cancer, Morrison ruminates on the contradictions in his father's character and tries to see him as a person separate from the parent-child relationship. His reminiscence of a rainy camping trip that his father took him on in an effort to become closer to his son is both comedic and heartbreaking. Morrison deals with his grief by eulogizing his father as a human being as flawed as himself but beloved by his son.

An important book to read

After his father was diagnosed with cancer, Blake Morrison & his family watch him quickly deteriorate & die within a matter of weeks. In trying to come to terms with his death, the author takes you back to the times he spent with his father through childhood to adolescence & adulthood. He writes an honest account of his feelings towards his father both good & bad, alternating between memories of the past & the current trauma of watching him fade away.
His experience is not unique which makes this a very important book to read.
