Great Resource

I rarely write reviews for the professional materials that I purchase but this is well worth the effort. I am the Common Core crazy person in my school. I have tons of resources on the Common Core but this one gives practical strategies for each of the standards. What I really like about the book is that it has strategies for ELL students and intensive work for students that need the reinforcement. Do you probably use some of these srtategies? Yes, but the book will help you organize and focus on a specific standard. I love the graphic organizers. The ONLY thing that would make this book even better would be examples of how the author uses the graphic organizers. While Lucy Calkins' book can give you overall information on the Common Core this book is practical and teacher friendly.

I teach first grade and have found many useful things in this book.
A wealth of printable pages that help with main idea, beginning-middle-end, etc. They make great exit slips and help keep my instruction focused.
I've used things from the book in large group instruction, small group instruction and literacy centers.
I would highly recommend this to fellow elementary educators.

Every teacher should have this within reach.

If you are looking for a resource that will give you practical help for tomorrow, this is it. As a K-5 teacher, I really like how it shows the progression of the standards from K to 5...even a grade level teacher will appreciate seeing how their grade fits within the continuum of learning. The best part to me is the wealth of strategies for teaching each standard and the clear directions on how to use them. I now feel that I have many more teaching tools in my toolbox. Not only that, but the graphic organizers and the materials needed to implement the ideas have been included, and are ready-to-use. But unlike many teacher resources, the materials can be used in many contexts without needing to be tweaked or recreated. This is a clear, concise guide to the reading standards and how to achieve them. I just ordered Ms. Owocki's writing book and expect it to be just as helpful. I am very glad I discovered these books.
