A Deceptively Simple Guide - Very Helpful Hints

It seems these days there are two kinds of "How To Draw" books - those aimed at aspiring comic book artists, and those aimed at aspiring fantasy artists. As a hobby artist who has taught myself, I've bought plenty of both, and found what they teach to be, basically, interchangeable - what you learn in either kind of book you can apply to your artwork no matter your genre. The real question is: is what the book offers useful? In the case of the Fantasy Artist's Figure Drawing Bible, I would have to offer a qualified "Yes."
This small book, first of all, is aimed at those who are trying to be fantasy artists and who want to work in color - either in digital or traditional techniques. There is no in-depth exploration of anatomy, etc. This book is really focused on "character" - and this is its main failing. At first glance this is really just a "gallery" book, showcasing artistic renditions of different fantasy archetypes: amazons, paladins, wizards, barbarians, enchantresses, vampires, orcs, trolls, demons, giants, etc. For each character it offers a fully-rendered image, a black and white line image for tracing or scanning, and a discussion of the character's personality, costume, pose, etc. This is about 75-80% of the book, and isn't especially helpful, though nice to look at.
Where the book really shines is in its little "tips and tricks" that are provided for each character. Here, you will find invaluable tips on how to render armor, fur, wood, cloth, skin, and stone, among others; tips on how to "ground" a figure; tips on how to add atmosphere, and so on. For those of us who have spent so much time on the figure and little to no real time considering "Oh, yeah - I can't just have them float in space in the drawing" this is tremendously helpful, and is worth the cost of the book.
There are other bonuses, as well - the first part of the book is taken up in a rendering tutorial, going step-by-step through the process of an illustration, form concept to final product. This will be helpful to anyone who has no clue as to how to proceed. The book is also sturdily made and has a very nice, protected spiral binding, so that it will lie flat (something other art books should really consider). What really would have made this book special would have been a DVD-ROM, which is common practice with many art "how to" books these days, with tutorials and files to practice on.
For all this, the book is really not meant to be used alone; it is the merest starting point (although a good one). If you are interested in computer coloring, the best books to start out with and learn the fundamentals are:
1. Hi-Fi Color For Comics: Digital Techniques for Professional Results
2. How To Color For Comics
While these are comics-oriented books, they will help you learn the rudiments that will make much of what is taught in this book make sense.

Concise, Clear Basics

I was a fan of Matt Dixon's work, so I bought this book as a bridge from the standard art technique texts I own to working towards a Fantasy-style.
This book is well-organized with a concise overview of drawing and coloring techniques, followed by a large gallery of Fantasy characters and creatures. You'd probably want a couple more books that would fill out the sections of art technique with more info, but this one is a fine place to start and will give you plenty to work on by itself.
The character gallery is very complete. It gives you a thorough look at 30-40 archetypes of characters from Fantasy. Each has a complete work-up with a finished painting, line art for copying, initial sketches, and alternate faces and accessories.
Overall, it's quite clear , friendly, and much, much better than many of the other "How-to-Draw Fantasy [fill-in-the-blank]" books. Oh...and I appreciated the covered ring-binding that allows it to lay flat.

Okay, so I was a little skeptical of this book at first. It has great reviews online, but I've purchased books in the past with the same types of reviews that fell flat. This is a how-to book, but not just a smattering of instructions with a bunch of pictures to study or a half dozen characters with a small handful of steps. This is about as complete as you cancel get if you are wanting to draw or paint fantasy characters. Basic how-to at the beginning, followed up by at least two dozen examples afterwards. Face choices, positions, clothing options, and the introduction of more advanced techniques as you read fill this book with a wealth of knowledge for anybody who needs help drawing people better.
