Great straightforward read! It helped with my interview, and I wish I had gotten it sooner.

A fast read that provided valuable tips and feedback in such a succinct and straightforward manner. I was able to read through the book a week before my PA interview and felt that it helped immensely! However, if I had known about this book earlier, I would have definitely gotten it in advanced, as I could have practiced the material suggested in the book more. Nonetheless, the book still managed to help me prepare with what little time I had before the interview. This book seems to cover all potential topics that may be brought up during an interview. It has tons of sample interview questions and gives "best, mediocre, and weak" sample answers. The author even goes further to explain why certain answers are better than others. I learned so much more about how to phrase my own interview responses. If you are the type of person who learns best by example then this is the book for you!

About the first 25 pages of the book gives you insight about how a PA interview is typically structured and what the the schools are looking for. The rest of the book is full of example interview questions with sample answers, so you can learn what a well structured answer looks like.
The last 50 pages are full of resources on PA programs and associations within the nation as well as how you can contact them. Personally I thought that this was unnecessary since any of this can be found through a simple internet search. Also, I'm not quite sure how these contacts help with interviewing at all... However, some people might like having everything organized in one place as they are working on their applications.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book. I had two interviews prior to getting the book and felt that I was always caught off guard somehow. After reading this book, I felt more prepared and really did "ACE" the last interview!

Useful for PA interviews but not much detail about group ...

Useful for PA interviews but not much detail about group interviews which was a bummer. You'll have to research that separately online. Still highly recommended though for people not familiar with interviews. I had an interview coach before and it had very similar concepts as well. However this is only good for traditional interviews, which still didn't help me overcome my actually delivery of my answers. It's hard to be an introvert with a speech disorder, so my advice to you is don't let it kill your self esteem if you don't do as well as you hoped. This book isn't a sure-all thing but can help shape your thinking of answers. I got into a better school with an MMI instead and a big scholarship to boot. This book helped with the one traditional question.

Better to OVER prepare than under!

It's better to be more prepared than under prepared and that is the only reason why I would encourage you to purchase this book. I've had two interviews so far and neither of them asked the majority of the questions from the book. With that being said, if you purchase the book I encourage you to focus on the traditional and situational chapters.

PROS:
- The book is easy to read and well organized,
- Each chapter provides concrete interview questions one should prepare for along with a best answer to each,
- The book's emphasis on personal connection being essential to doing well in the interview.

CONS:
- Book should be updated; doesn't include information on how to prepare for a group interview as you are more than likely going have one (I did, twice), and it also doesn't let students know that they may be expected to participate in group activities (again, I also had to do this),
- Long, long pointless resource list at the end of the book that took up nearly a quarter of the book.

I particularly like the six points made by David Orr in the first of two Forewords, the sixth of which suggests that systems thinking -- holistic design -- is akin to the core nature of religion in binding us all together in our stewardship of the Earth as a shared habitat.

I cannot over-state the value of the questions asked in each chapter. This is a book that Joan Blades and Living Room Conversations could easily take on as a global starting point for the one conversation that matters most, the question of who we are and why we are more worthy together than apart.

As I go through the book, I see the humility of the questions -- this is a book that embraces the idea that "we" can come up with better answers than the author by himself -- and the very wide net the author has cast to capture the thoughts of others that are very elegantly distilled in this easy to read, very broad, and also very deep, manifesto for the future of humanity and Earth.

Collective design is what you get when you achieve collective intelligence. The author has done a fine job of tapping into the pioneering works of others such as Elinor Ostrom who earned the Nobel for her book Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions), and Tom Atlee, who did not, but could, for his collected works including The Tao of Democracy: Using Co-Intelligence to Create a World that Works for All.

As the book morphs from introduction to conclusion it comes together with two other books I have recently reviewed, by circumstance also 6-Star books (the portal to all my reviews sorted by 98 categories and each star class is at Phi Beta Iota Public Intelligence Blog / Reviews (Page), Pedro Ortiz's The Art of Shaping the Metropolis, and Parag Khanna's book, Connectography: Mapping the Future of Global Civilization. He draws ably from others -- for example, Figure 25 on page 223, is a redrawn version of The Solidarity Economy building on the work of Ethan Miller.

I am stunned to find that Figure 29 is from The Open-Source Everything Manifesto: Transparency, Truth, and Trust (Manifesto Series) so I cannot help but be moved by the fact that the author detected and understood why we must migrate from an economics for the few to an economics for the many, and the only way to do that affordably and scalably is by embracing "open" across all domains, not just the information technology domain -- the five billion poor must be empowered with free energy, free clean water, free pressed-brick shelters, and free Internet access, in return they will innovate and create infinite wealth with a regenerative aspect.

The book ends, and I quote (page 268):

"Living the questions is an opportunity to connect, to yourself, to your community, to your world."

Somebody give this guy an honorary PhD -- he has more than earned it. While I always liked E. O. Wilson, his stuff is hard to read -- a precursor in some ways to this book, Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge, gave me a headache despite the importance of the material. Similarly, while very subtly present, the spiritual aspect of this book is in keeping with the very best of other works, such as James Molben's God and Science: Coming Full Circle?.

On my Latino side, going back to my mother's family in Spain via Colombia, the family motto was "Que Vivas" -- that you might live! Indeed. The author has provided a manifesto for life. I could not be more impressed.

Great study guide

This is a great book to practice alternative question that you do not find in your standard NCLEX prep book but will encounter on the NCLEX exam. I love that the answers and rationals are on the same page as the questions. It is frustrating when you have to go searching for the answer section.

ISAO YOSHIKAWA
Born in Tokyo in 1940. Graduated from the Architecture Department of Shibaura Technical University. He established the Japan Garden Research Association in 1963. Presently chairperson of the Association. The honorary president of the Suzhou Society for study of Landscape & Gandens, China. The honorary president of the Hangzhou Society for study of Landscape & Gardens, China. He plays an active part as a scholar of Japanese gardens. a garden architect, a designer of stone art objects, etc.

THIS IS THE BOOK I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR!

"Building Bamboo Fences" has all the information you will need to build your own bamboo fence. Additionally, Mr. Yoshida has included a brief history of bamboo fences in Japan, a complete glossary of terms and many beautiful color photographs for inspiration. Fence diagrams range from simple see-through fences to more complex bamboo screening fences. The diagrams, techniques, and instructions for building different types of bamboo fences are clear, complete, easy to follow and even include tips on how to correct any problems you may have in construction. I turned an open work bamboo fence diagram into a trellis for my climbing rose bush in one afternoon. Whether you are looking to build simple edgings for garden paths or a full-screen fence - this is the book to use.

Quirky, but thorough.

136 pages, not including the glossary. The first 16 pages are a history of Japanese fencing, and the terms used for each type of fence. The next 32 pages are color photos of the various fences in real world scenarios. Some are incredibly impressive! Then 6 pages of knots, terms, and the basics of working with bamboo. Then 11 types of fence, with diagrams. Naturally, the Japanese language includes about a bazillion variations of bamboo fence, and the terms used to describe them. We'll get to that in a moment. Each section is laid out with the first page showing a drawing of the fence type, a brief description, and then 4-10 pages of building diagrams, which sometimes include b&w photos. Some are simple, and some are VERY intricate. They're almost all beautiful. The fact that it includes so many diagrams is a nice touch for us Westerners, and the one thing that makes the book useful to the guy or gal who wants to actually BUILD a fence, instead of learning about them. However... When reading through the diagrams, the author (who is Japanese) constantly uses the Japanese name of the various parts of the fence, which sometimes frustrates me, since I have to go back to the front of the book and look it up. Yes, there's a diagram, but I still like to know exactly what's going on, to eliminate any errors. It's certainly not the authors fault that he uses correct terminology- it's my fault for being American enough to find it annoying to have to constantly backtrack- not only to the preliminary pages describing the terms, but to the 6 pages of knot descriptions. Some of the knots are crazy, and even with repetition, I sometimes ask myself if I'm doing them right. It's probably something that most people won't mind, but I get impatient with projects, and want them done. Weird for a guy building Japanese bamboo fences, huh? Anyway, it's a VERY thorough book, and certainly worthy of your consideration if you have any interest in constructing one of the 11 beautiful types of fences here. Bear in mind, too, that the author says that the lifespan of bamboo is around 5 years. That may deter someone from undertaking the task of constructing one, but it's actually pretty fun, and the beauty of the process, not to mention the finished fence, has been known to have a calming effect. Even on an impatient American.

A fantastic resource

This book is a wonderful and unique resource. Bamboo has invaded many suburban gardens and this book shows a way to put the pesky bamboo to use in a beautiful and inexpensive way. Many different Japanese bamboo fence styles were shown in colorful photographs, providing visual detail that is hard to convey in words or with diagrams, and also showed the fences in various settings to provide ideas of where you might want to build a Japanese style bamboo fence. In addition, detailed instructions and diagrams for building several different styles of traditional fences were a valuable guide. I used this book together with The Craft and Art of Bamboo, revised and updated, 30 eco friendly projects and was able to get a good understanding of basic techniques. I built a trellis, while far from perfect, it is a start.

This has led to the creation of an extremely promising new generation of crystalline lasers that are both highly efficient and more reliable. The major part of this book is devoted to describing multilevel operating laser schemes for stimulated emission excitation in insulating crystals doped with lanthanide ions.

The first part of Crystalline Lasers deals with the history of the physics and spectroscopy of insulating laser crystals. The chapters in the second part of the book present results from the study of Stark-energy levels of generating ions in laser crystals and their radiative and nonradiative intermanifold transition characteristics. This section includes extensive tabular data and reference information. Popular and novel operating schemes of crystalline lasers are covered in Part 3.

In the chapters in the fourth part of the book, the newest technologies in the physics and engineering of crystalline lasers are considered. The results of investigations into laser action under selective excitations, miniature crystalline lasers, and the properties of nonlinear activated laser crystals are presented and analyzed.
Crystalline Lasers summarizes and reviews the results of many years of research and studies of activator ions and multilevel operating laser schemes, and discusses exciting prospects of using these systems to create new types of crystalline lasers. This book will be of use to laser scientists and engineers, physicists, and chemical engineers.
