About the Author
Robert Descharnes, a photographer and writer, has published studies of major artists, among them Antoni Gaudi and Auguste Rodin. Since 1950, he has been documenting and cataloguing Dali's paintings and writings, and is now considered the leading expert on the artist. Shortly before Dali's death, Descharnes was appointed by him to take charge of the rights to his works, within the Societe Demart Pro Arte B.V., of which Descharnes is president. Gilles Neret was an art historian, journalist, writer, and museum correspondent. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU museum and the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He directed art reviews such as L'Oeil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Elie Faure Prize in 1981 for his publications. Neret is the editor of TASCHEN'S catalogues raisonnes of the works of Monet and Velazquez, as well as the author of Dali The Paintings and Erotica Universalis. He died on August 3, 2005.

If you love art books but are not willing to spend a fortune in them or don't have as much space, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. Taschen makes great, concise volumes of the best painters. Amazing images from Salvador Dali. Great book to have, especially as a set with others from the same collection!

All I can say is wow. Great book, beautiful illustrations of Dali's work. My daughter is a painter and I wanted to give her something she can admire and also tinker around on her canvas with Dali's inspiring paintings. Love this guy. : )

Great Illustrations and Precise Instructions

My gosh! This book is amazing, but is not for the faint of heart. If you are an occassional fixer uper who changes his/her own oil and maybe some spark plugs or brakes, this book is NOT for you. However, if you are delving into engine building and specs, this book is a great source book to keep on the shelf for referencing. It'll remind you of precise measurements and tools to use in particular circumstances while blueprinting an engine. The book also discusses what true blueprinting is vs. the generic "blueprinting" vocabulary that is loosely thrown out there by many mechanics.

It's a great teaching tool for those just starting engine blueprinting and an excellent resource for those professional blueprinters as well. Well worth the purchase. The book is all about precision, precision, precision of ALL engine parts! Great illustrations too!

Again, just as a reminder, this book is for those into building engines to precise measurements. This practice involves lots of financial resources and instruments. If you are not already into blueprinting or planning on it, then this book is not for you. The reading level of this informational text is very advanced, but is awesome if you understand the lingo in the art of blueprinting.

Another great book from Car Tech. Informative and entertaining, every part is analyzed for function and techniques used to optimize it for better performance. I have always had a strong interest in Cars and Engines. Whereas I have rebuilt an engine or two, I have never Blueprinted one..... this book gives you the written tools to do so and I would feel very confident following the instructions and using the great illustrations to complete such a project. This book collects the results and conclusions of recent neutron-based investigations of materials that are important in the development of sustainable energy. The individual chapters were written by leading scientists with hands-on experience in the field, providing overviews, recent highlights, and case studies to illustrate the applicability of one or more neutron-based analytical techniques. Though the main focus is on energy production, storage, and use, each chapter and section can also be read independently, with basic theory and instrumentation for neutron scattering being outlined in the introductory chapter.
While neutron scattering is extensively used to understand the properties of condensed matter, neutron techniques are exceptionally-well suited to studying how the transport and binding of energy and charge-carrying molecules and ions are related to their dynamics and the material’s crystal structure. In some cases, these studies extend to in situ and in operando. The species of interest in leading energy-technologies include H2, H+, and Li+, as their particularly favorable neutron-scattering properties make them ideal for such studies; as a result, neutron-based analysis is commonplace for hydrogen storage, fuel-cell, catalytic, and battery materials. Similar research into the functionality of solar-cell, nuclear, and CO2 capture/storage materials rely on other unique aspects of neutron scattering and again show how their structure and dynamics provide an understanding of the material stability and the binding and mobility of species of interest.

About the Author
Prof Don Kearley received his PhD from the University of East Anglia, UK, worked at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, became Chair of Radiation Physics at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, and is presently Senior Researcher in the Neutron Scattering Group at the Bragg Institute of ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization). He has a fair experience of most neutron-scattering techniques, particularly inelastic and quasielastic methods. Currently most of his work is in providing modelling support for the neutron scattering activities of scientists at the Bragg institute and elsewhere, which is usually in the form of understanding the underlying mechanism in function. Dr Vanessa Peterson is a Senior Research and Instrument Scientist at ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization). Her expertise includes structure and dynamics in chemistry and their relationship to properties in condensed matter materials including cement, porous coordination framework materials, and hydrogen storage materials. She has also great expertise in analyses techniques like Synchrotron/Laboratory X-Ray and Neutron Powder Diffraction, Rietveld analysis, Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering, Inelastic Neutron Scattering, and Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction.

Fatah (Chasing a Mirage) describes the tensions between followers of Islam and of Judaism, attributing the lack of understanding and compassion between these groups to the scriptures they study and propaganda spread by radicals. Fatah explains that from a young age Muslim children are taught to pray for the downfall of other religions, especially Judaism, and though "most of us ignore it as nothing more than the rhetoric of the screaming cleric," lingering suspicion about Jews remains "for our entire lives, even if we never meet one." He also examines beliefs that many Pakistani Muslim's voice, such as blaming Israel for the Bird Flu, and the fact that in order to be considered an intellectual or a faithful Muslim, one is expected to wholeheartedly embrace these rumors as fact; to speak out against propaganda is slanderous and those who doubt the teachings of religious leaders are dehumanized. Pakistani textbooks and TV shows support these rumors as facts, widely disseminating anti-Semitism daily. In spite of all this, Fatah offers examples of Muslims supporting, befriending, or even saving Jewish people, demonstrating the importance of tolerance and understanding in a world full of opposing beliefs and ideologies. Most stringent Muslim critiques of Islam are written by scholars for scholars. Journalist Fatah knows that scholarship but writes for general readers—moreover, on an aspect of Islam rarely publicly discussed in the West. Genocidal hatred of the Jews is endemic among Muslims. But, Fatah argues, it is fueled by a biography of Muhammad composed long after his death, and is a relatively recent development. After limning the 2008 Chabad House massacre in Mumbai and noting Christian anti-Semitism’s influence on Muslims, Fatah turns to the early-twentieth-century mufti of Palestine’s alliance with Hitler; Israel’s ill-advised aid to Hamas to check Arafat’s PLO; and anti-Semitism in the hadith, or sayings of Muhammad, and, finally, in two spellbinding chapters looks at the prophet-directed massacre of a whole Jewish tribe that had stayed out of the 627 Battle of the Trench—according to the biography. That incident probably never happened and, with the vicious hadith, thoroughly contradicts the true text of the Qur’an. Interesting Insights into a Difficult Problem

Muslim reformer Tarek Fatah tackles the issues of antisemitism within Islam - its origins and the mechanisms that sustain it. He's a modern secular Indo-Pakistani immigrant Canadian Muslim journalist of Hindu ancestry - a man of many pasts. The book begins with a 2006 trip to his native Pakistan where in a land of no Jews he found widespread examples of antisemitic prejudice. Jews were accused of causing both the 2004 tsunami and the "Bird Flu" epidemic. A shopkeeper hands him a copy of "The Protocols of the Elders of Ziyon", assuring him that it's true. (pp 18). Peshawar millionaires with retinues of servants complain how Muslims are marginalized by Jews, Israel and the United States then asked how they could get a green card for their sons so that the family could migrate to the US. Then in 2008 Punjabi villagers make special pains to target the Jewish Chabad centre in Mumbai, their controller advising them that killing one Jew is worth more than killing 50 people.

Of course we know the problem is much broader and the author supplies related examples throughout the Muslim Ummah. Even the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Matathir bin Mohamad, a man Fatah has admired, subscribed to the belief that it was the "Jewish Lobby" that was behind the war in Afghanistan, and that Jews had to be contained in ghettos and periodically massacred in Europe to contain their influence.

Fatah traces multiple causes of this poisonous dysfunction. Chapters 3 & 2 provide a thorough albeit out of sequence background on Palestinian/Arab powerbroker Hajj Amin al-Hussayni and those he influenced both during and after the war including Veli Kayum Khan and Sayd Qutb. Husayni, who's voice was behind the anti-Jewish riots of 1920,21 and 29, was also responsible for the Arab Strike which boycotted Jewish businesses and waged a guerrilla war from 1936-39 against the British Mandate and Arab rival clans who were more conciliatory. In 1937 he engineered the death of Lewis Andrews, the British Consul for Galilee and was forced to flee to Syria. During the late 30s and 1940s his Arab Higher Committee was largely funded by the Nazis and he spent much of the war engaged in anti-Jewish propaganda directed at the Arab world as an honoured guest of the Reich. In 1945 Husayni escaped via France to Cairo where Arab political threats were used to prevent the west from extraditing him for war crimes.

A second source is Islamofascism which the author claims distorts original the meaning and intent of the Quran by basing itself on questionable Hadiths and interpretations. In particular (Ch 6 & 7) he argues against the authenticity the Battle of the Trench as related by Ibn Ishak who wrote about the Prophet's massacre of Jewish Banu Qurayza tribe, often used to emphasize Islam's superiority and Jews' responsibility for their own death. Citing a lack of corroborating Jewish sources and physical evidence (not that the Saudis are that interested in archeology - he notes their destruction several historic sites including Mohammad's home) he concludes that this event, which would show Mohammad as a mass murderer, never happened. The problem is that many Muslims have been taught that it did and believe that the justification for these events lie in the innately evil nature of Jews.

Yet the first two influences might have died out if not for the Arab discovery of high priced oil in the 1970s. In previous decades clerics were often made fun of as inconsequential. Saudi financed madrases drilled negative imagery across the middle east resulting in a hardline politicization of Islam. In rival Shia Iran the Ayatollah Khomeini introduced the idea of clerical guardianship of the political stream. But on an everyday level communal peer pressure to conform is also a problem. Fatah's acquaintances routinely dismissed his positive reports on the status of Israeli Arabs. One Muslim couple with similar experiences confided that they could not relate this to their friends: "We have to live in our community and cannot be seen as not being anti-Israel." (pp180)

Ch. 4 asks whether or not Israel itself is unintentionally fueling anti-semitism, and here is where we differ. Fatah argues that although the Palestinians have shown great incompetence over the years, both in constructing a national infrastructure and in accepting Israeli overtures for a political settlement, it is Israel who holds all the cards. The author's real fear is that that Islamicism will triumph over secularism - resolving the conflict will take away the "oxygen" that fuels the Islamicists and antisemisitm. He recommends that if Israel is unable to get the Palestinians to the negotiating table that they unilaterally withdraw to borders of their own choosing. Fatah cites two examples of Jewish racism and notes that even though these were the exception and disowned by the vast majority of Jews and Israelis, they were blown out of proportion by Israel's enemies. I don't think unilateralism will work. Hiz b'Allah still thinks it has to liberate Lebanese territory (none is held by Israel) and withdrawal from Gaza hasn't muted Hamas' claims for liberating Al Aqsa (controlled by the Islamic Waqf) and Tel Aviv. Nor are conspiracy theories about Jewish control foreign to Arab secularists who've been influenced by both Marxist and Islamicist propaganda over their formative years. Israel should not be condemned for the imperfection of individuals within it's society that are far more prevalent in it's neighbours, especially when due process prevents instant and autocratic solutions. Even though this might not be clear in Cairo but it should be obvious in Ottawa and New York. Internalization of a new paradigm of acceptance of and collaborative partnership with an non-Muslim Modern Westernized Democratic Middle Eastern Jewish State requires Arab buy in.

Previously I've read Fatah's Chasing a Mirage , which argued for separation of mosque and state. Both books are well worth reading.

Tarek Fatah presents an unbiased view of the situation in Israel/Palestine and debunks many myths. It is extremely well written and holds the reader's attention the entire time. Much history which all of us need to know to dispell prejudices on both sides.

About the Author
Steve Jamison is a bestselling author and America's preeminent authority on the leadership philosophy of UCLA's legendary coach John Wooden, whose basketball dynasty won ten March Madness national championships.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Walsh was head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 1979 to 1989, with an overall record of 102 wins and 63 losses.

Craig Walsh is a former marketing executive for the San Francisco 49ers and the current executive director of Santa Clara's Healthy Kids program.

"But here's the lesson I learned...."

Whenever a list of the NFL's greatest coaches is formulated, Bill Walsh's name is usually included with those of other Hall of Famers such as Paul Brown, George Hallas, Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, Chuck Noll, and Don Shula. I was especially eager to read this book, written with Steve Jamison and his only surviving son, Craig, because I wanted to gain a much better understanding of Bill Walsh's leadership style and management preferences during an illustrious career as a head coach in the NFL: a record of 102-63-1 with the San Francisco 49ers, winning ten of his fourteen postseason games along with six division titles, three NFC Championship titles, and three Super Bowls. He was named the NFL's Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1984.

Especially in recent years, there have been many articles and books written about how to develop peak performers. (Some of the best observations and insights are provided by Erika Andersen in her book, Growing Great Employees.) The most highly-admired CEOs tend be those who were especially effective developing high-impact leaders among those in middle management. At GE, Jack Welch devoted at least 20% of his time to mentoring high-potential middle managers and his successor, Jeff Immelt, continues to do so. Given that, now consider the fact that a total of 24 head coaches in the NFL were once an assistant coach on his staff at one time, and many of them led teams to victory in the Super Bowl (e.g. Brian Billick, Jon Gruden, Mike Holmgren, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan). Some of Walsh's greatest skills were those of a teacher. Many who recalled their association with him after his death (from leukemia in 2007) made it a point to praise his intellect, energy, scope and depth of knowledge, enthusiasm, insatiable curiosity, and especially his passion to help others to understand what great success required and how to achieve it.

In the introductory essay, "A Leader's Book for Leaders," Craig Walsh identifies five "key" players in his father's life: Joe Montana (the first quarterback he drafted who led the 49ers to all of their Super Bowl victories), John McVay (vice president and director of the 49ers' operations while Walsh was head coach), Mike White (a long-time personal friend and a fellow assistant coach at U. Cal Berkeley), Bill McPherson (a defensive assistant coach while Walsh coached the 49ers), and Randy Cross ("a great offensive lineman [and a] member of the San Francisco 49ers for thirteen years including his first three, which were pre--Bill Walsh seasons"). All of them accepted an invitation to "contribute their analyses of the leadership philosophy of Bill Walsh and expand on the comprehensive lessons my father offers [in this book]...these five were asked and kindly accepted the invitation to more fully explain the `genius' of Bill Walsh." Their contributions are substantial. Nonetheless, this is still Bill Walsh's book.

In the Foreword, "His Standard of Performance," Montana praises Walsh's ability "to teach people how to think and play at a different and much higher, and, at times, perfect level." How? Three ways: sharing a tremendous knowledge of all aspects of the game, assembling a highly competent staff as well as coaches "who knew how to coach" and who complemented the intensive instruction that Walsh provided on and off the field, and finally, developing a hatred of mistakes. "He was extremely demanding without a lot of noise...great at making people great students" and "ran a pretty tight ship, but he knew when to let us. He didn't beat up players mentally of physically." On the contrary, he assembled teams whose players who had to be highly intelligent to understand the immensely complicated strategies and game plans for which Walsh was noted throughout his career. He may have been the most cerebral head coach in the league's history. That said, Craig Walsh also reveals that his father "was an outsider; he wanted to be an insider. What he found along the way professionally, starting in his days as an assistant coach, was an unwillingness by others to `let him in.' He didn't have the pedigree -and athletic résumé from a big-name school or assistant coaching credentials from a big college program." Nonetheless, what he accomplished as a coach was eventually considered sufficient for election to the NFL Hall of Fame.

I was fascinated to learn that Twelve O'clock High was one of Walsh's favorite films and that he identified with the lead character, General Frank Savage (portrayed brilliantly by Gregory Peck) who commanded the 918th Bomber group during World War II. "My father loved that movie because it told the story of what he did in football, and what happened to him as a result, in the context of something he loved - the military."

The account of Walsh's career is enlightening. There are important business lessons to be learned from his leadership and management, especially during periods of failure as well as of success. This is what his son means when referring to "his ferocious competitive instinct, and his singular brilliance as a strategist, organizer, and team builder," who "produced historic results." However, what I found riveting is the multi-dimensional portrait of a profoundly human Bill Walsh that emerges gradually as the narrative proceeds, an "outsider" obsessed with "proving them all wrong." He did that and, with what he so generously shares in this book, can continue to help others learn "how to be as great as they can be."

The Exceptional Assembly Line Comes Before the Quality Car:

Great insights into the ideas that took Bill Walsh to the pinnacle of the coaching profession and the stressors that wore him down. The "Score Takes Care of Itself" relates to Walsh's "Standard of Performance" and the idea that if you have a consistently high quality process that you will produce a high quality product. You will always be in the base camp, close to the summit: As a coach, this book will help you build the assembly line. The quality car (and football team) will follow:

Bill Walsh on the Standard of Performance:
* Culture precedes positive results. It doesn't get tacked on as an afterthought on the way to the victory stand. Champions behave like champions before they are champions.
* The exceptional assembly line comes before the quality car - strive to make your assembly line better and better.
* All we can do is increase the probability of success. Do it by intelligently and relentlessly seeking solutions that will increase your chances of prevailing in a competitive environment. When you do that, the score will take care of itself.
* Teach players to hate mistakes in games and practice - if you aim for perfection and miss, you're still pretty good...if you aim for mediocrity...
* "Organizational excellence evolves from the perfection of details relevant to performance and production."
* "I know what is required for us to win. I will show you what it is."
* "There are winners and there are people who would like to be winners but just don't know how to do it."

For all Niner and Walsh fans!

If you have seen the NFL Network's series, "A Football Life", you may have seen the 90-min special they did on Bill Walsh. The video documentary is EXCELLENT, and paints a compelling story of this fascinating and brilliant man. This book, in progress at the time of his death, was finished by his son with the help of Steve Jamison. Several of Walsh's players and friends add their own insights in this book, which add to the interest.

Like all of Walsh's work, it's more a series of short essays, collected and sorted into manageable categories. They are based on the speeches he gave after retiring from coaching. Now, as a management system I don't think he says anything that Steven Covey and others haven't said. But if you have ever wondered if the guy was really as good as his fans claim, or why the Niners were the 2015 laughing stock of the NFL, all you need to do is read this book to understand:

1) Yes, he really was as brilliant as his fans claim
2) Yes, his burnout was inevitable; he cared too passionately, too intensely about perfection
3) No, nobody in the current Niner organization even comes within ten Levi Stadiums' distance of Walsh' football expertise and management skills.

Reading this, you understand that coaches like Mike Holmgren and Bill Belicheck are the real Walsh fans. And how success breeds success, but also the never-ceasing, crushing pressure that accompanies it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all football fans.
