Modern Romance, by Aziz Ansari, Eric Klinenberg

The #1 New York Times Bestseller

A hilarious, thoughtful, and in-depth exploration of the pleasures and perils of modern romance from one of this generation’s sharpest comedic voices

At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

Some of our problems are unique to our time. “Why did this guy just text me an emoji of a pizza?” “Should I go out with this girl even though she listed Combos as one of her favorite snack foods? Combos?!” “My girlfriend just got a message from some dude named Nathan. Who’s Nathan? Did he just send her a photo of his penis? Should I check just to be sure?”

But the transformation of our romantic lives can’t be explained by technology alone. In a short period of time, the whole culture of finding love has changed dramatically. A few decades ago, people would find a decent person who lived in their neighborhood. Their families would meet and, after deciding neither party seemed like a murderer, they would get married and soon have a kid, all by the time they were twenty-four. Today, people marry later than ever and spend years of their lives on a quest to find the perfect person, a soul mate.

For years, Aziz Ansari has been aiming his comic insight at modern romance, but for Modern Romance, the book, he decided he needed to take things to another level. He teamed up with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg and designed a massive research project, including hundreds of interviews and focus groups conducted everywhere from Tokyo to Buenos Aires to Wichita. They analyzed behavioral data and surveys and created their own online research forum on Reddit, which drew thousands of messages. They enlisted the world’s leading social scientists, including Andrew Cherlin, Eli Finkel, Helen Fisher, Sheena Iyengar, Barry Schwartz, Sherry Turkle, and Robb Willer. The result is unlike any social science or humor book we’ve seen before.

In Modern Romance, Ansari combines his irreverent humor with cutting-edge social science to give us an unforgettable tour of our new romantic world.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of June 2015: Aziz Ansari’s first book Modern Love is thoughtful, deep, and outright hilarious: it’s definitely not your run-of-the-mill actor/comedian book offering, and it works. He takes a hot topic that has been a part of his recent stand-up—navigating this minefield called dating—and brings it to a whole new level. The book includes extensive research, data, and insight from leading experts in the field (he co-wrote it with a social scientist)—all sprinkled with Ansari’s signature, and spot-on, voice of a generation. Would I have read Modern Love by [insert name of expert here]? No way. If I am going to take a long hard look at this subject, I want Ansari along for the ride. Aziz lets you know the struggle is real, and we’re all going through it, so be nice. --Deborah Bass

Review
New York Times:
"A sprightly, easygoing hybrid of fact, observation, advice and comedy."

USA Today:
"With topics like online dating apps to serious social science research, the book is sure to have you laughing if not taking a few notes.”

The Guardian:
“Entertaining and illuminating.”

Rolling Stone:
“A hilarious, often unsettling account of what young singles go through as they search for love in the digital age.”

Boston Globe:
“A funny and scholarly examination of the 24-hour romance cycle.”

Paste Magazine:
“The book is an obsessive exploration of what makes hearts flutter and break across the globe, but most importantly, it dissects those ideas through the lens of a right-and-left swiping society. And as a result, Ansari’s final product doesn’t only feel complete—it’s hilariously executed, even without his unmistakable high-register voice belting the punchlines. At 250 pages, Modern Romance is a lean, pithy read that’s perfect to reach the tech-obsessed generation it explores.”

 Refinery 29:
“An engaging look at the often head-scratching, frequently infuriating mating behaviors that shape our love lives.”

VOX:
“With his first foray into the literary sphere, Ansari handedly accomplishes what he set out to do. Modern Romance provides insight into what people do to find love. He infuses their stories with his sass and parallels their shame with much of his own. On top of that, Ansari’s advice is easy to follow and backed with science and research. Modern Romance is the pinnacle of romantic guides — at least until a new dating app makes it obsolete.”

The A.V. Club:
“It’s hard to think of another celebrity book that also feels like breaking news… Aside from the jokes, the science of Modern Romance holds water, and is absolutely fascinating.”

Contexts
“This book is awesome.”

The  Source:
“This book is essentially an Aziz Ansari standup routine in print form. His unique voice is present throughout the book. One reason that people love Aziz is his outlook on life. He has a funny way of refocusing seemingly ordinary things and zeroing in on very small details that most would not notice. He brings all of that and more to the table with this book. This book is informative, presents a lot of thought provoking topics and discusses them thoroughly. Paired with Aziz’s distinct voice, this book is even more endearing.”

The Daily Beast:
“Funny, informative, and surprisingly earnest.”

The Atlantic:
“Modern Romance reads like a CliffsNotes to relationshipping as it is currently experienced by (mostly middle-class, Ansari admits, and mostly straight) Americans. It’s the familiar stuff of research and sitcomedy, distilled into a funny, and highly readable, summary.”

Bustle:
“You’re not going to find a traditional humor book. And that’s a good thing. Modern Romance is something a bit more unique: a comprehensive, in-depth sociological investigation into the ‘many challenges of looking for love in the digital age.’ Modern Romance gives an impressive overview of how the dating game has changed with the advent of cell phones and the Internet. But there’s also some practical advice peppered in there by Ansari himself.”

O, The Oprah Magazine:
“Even comedy phenoms get dumped. But when it was this Parks and Recreation star’s turn, he channeled the rejection into an extensive (and riotous) investigation of the current state of dating, going as far as recruiting an NYU sociologist to be his collaborator/wingman.”

Bookforum:
“A social-science book that’s pleasant to read and a comedy book that actually has something to say.”

Kirkus Reviews:
“The ever hip and funny comedian and Parks and Recreation star embarks on a surprisingly insightful exploration of the complex realities of dating today…. Ansari’s eminently readable book is successful, in part, because it not only lays out the history, evolution, and pitfalls of dating, it also offers sound advice on how to actually win today’s constantly shifting game of love. Often hilarious, consistently informative, and unusually helpful.”

Natasha Gilmore, Publishers Weekly:
“Ansari, a comedian and TV actor, has co-written a book with a legitimate sociologist about what it means to date in the modern era. When technology and instant gratification are changing the landscape of human interactions, dating is weirder than ever, and I'm looking forward to Ansari's sense of humor and cultural criticism on the topic, which he's started to address in his stand-up.”

Steven Levitt, coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestselling Freakonomics:
“Always-hilarious Aziz Ansari proves you can be smart and funny at the same time. Not only did I laugh my ass off, I really learned stuff. Where was this book when I was 22 years old? ”

Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Eating Animals:
“Laughing is my second least-favorite thing in the world after thinking. This book was torture.  Not a page passed without an unwanted eruption of giggles or insight. Aziz is funny as hell, and smart as shit.”

Sherry Turkle, Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; author of Reclaiming Conversation:
“It's the voices that will have you reading this remarkable book in one sitting! The voices of old people who married someone who lived in their apartment building or the building next door and the voices of the young people who check out hundreds of romantic possibilities a night, with so much choice that choice becomes impossible. And then there is the voice of Ansari himself, funny, of course, but also deeply compassionate. This book defines serious fun.”

Dave Eggers, author of Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever?:
“Modern Romance is just like Aziz Ansari himself—charming, thoughtful, reasonable, and able to distill the madness of the world into something both sane and wildly funny.”

Helen Fisher, Senior Research Fellow, The Kinsey Institute; author of Why Him? Why Her?:
“Ansari and Klinenberg elegantly capture the entirely new ways that singles communicate, court, and find love today. Modern Romance is a captivating read, with deep insight into history, science, and culture, and loads of wit and charm. Along the way, you may even collect some valuable tips for finding a soul mate.”

Modern Romance Decrypted
By book_thief
When I read that Aziz had a book coming out, I decided I needed to treat myself.

To start, I think anybody contemplating buying the Kindle version should really just spend the extra bucks for the hardcopy, as the book is filled with cool colored pictures and graphs that I think really add to the overall experience. It just wouldn’t be as fun reading on a black and white Kindle.

That being said, when I first started the book I was expecting another biography similar to that of Mindy Khaling’s or Amy Poehler’s. Just another comedian writing a book about their lives in a humorous way while occasionally doing some name dropping of other famous people.

I’m glad that ended up not being the case at all. This book was actually written based on numerous research and study group experiments. Aziz teamed up with a renowned sociologist who is an expert in this field to learn as much as he can about modern dating. All of that made up for a very informing read backed by lots of data and interviews with real people. Of course, all this data is presented in an Aziz way - full of humor in the best way possible. Not once did I feel bored about all the numbers that were on the pages, and I found myself laughing out loud a lot every so often from the ridiculous stories Aziz came up with.

Most of the book is focused around online dating and how the current generation is navigating themselves through this new world. Why is it so hard to feel satisfied when there are so many options at our fingertips? How did people even find anybody before with their limited options? What happens after we finally settle on one person? Will we be more satisfied with our choices 20 years in the future?

This book tries to answer a lot of those questions by looking at older generations before us and how it eventually evolved to where we are now. Aziz even went to places like Japan, Paris and India to compare the dating cultures there. All of this combined created a very interesting perspective at how different dating can be.

There were a couple times in the book where I felt like things started to drag on from too much repetition. But never did I feel like the book was a drag to read, and I quickly finished this book within a couple hours of reading time.

All said and done, definitely take the moment to just treat yoself and read this book. If you don't know much about modern dating, you'll learn about it, and if you think you already know a lot about modern dating, you'll learn how to be better at it and then some.

By Sarah Johanna DJ
As a Belgian I am totally unfamiliar with Aziz Ansari as a celebrity/stand-up comedian. I ordered this book after I mentioned being SUPER frustrated by texting with flaky or pervy guys to a friend. She send me an article about the "Straight White Boys Texting" blog that also mentioned Aziz's upcoming book. Drawn by the strong sociological research focus I decided to give it a go.

First off, I was SUPER relieved to find out my frustrations and anxieties seemed to be universal. VERY universal. I had no idea. It feels comforting to know we're all in this together, as Aziz tells us many times.

Secondly, the research presented in this book is impressive, while still so clearly written and spiced with humor and clever remarks that I highlighted (I guess I would like the guys' shows) In fact, the book is besides informative also super entertaining. A challenging combination but Aziz nailed it brilliantly.

And thirdly, thanks for the advice :) I am sure guilty of a few dating faux pas myself and will take his advice to heart. Especially the part where he tells us about first changing his lifestyle to fit that of his dream girl, in order to finally meet his dream girl (which - surprise! - was NOT at 3am in a dark drunk night club). His advice based on the research or on his own experience can sometimes be shockingly obvious/evident, yet it seems that both Aziz and me really needed to see it in graphs or focus groups to become conscious of it and improve our strategies!

Basically, I would highly recommend this book to any 25-40 year old being confused about love, (online) dating, choice, texting/sexting, settling and commitment. I guess that's a pretty big market right there :)

A hilariously useful map of the dating landscape in the digital age
By Dr Ali Binazir
On my birthday – which is the same as the publication date of this book -- my sister called to tell me that she’d bought me Aziz Ansari’s new book. “Great!,” I thought. Aziz is one funny dude, so it should not be much of a chore to humor my sister’s generosity by reading it. It wasn’t until the next day, when I read Aziz & Eric’s New York Times article on online dating, that I realized that this book was going to hit the sweet spot of my brain like a Tomahawk missile, for reasons that are about to become abundantly obvious. I finished “Modern Romance” the same night I received it, thereby ignoring actual romance with an actual woman.

What you have to realize is that “Modern Romance,” although plenty funny at approximately one guffaw per 7 minutes, is not merely a book of humor. It’s co-written with an actual university sociology professor (Eric Klinenberg of NYU, who for some reason doesn’t get credited on the cover, hmm), and contains much legwork and original research. These guys have created focus groups, polled theater audiences, spoken to experts in the field, and most important, delved into thousands of real text message chats from real people. It contains data, my friends – the kind of data that you and I do not have access to, unless you happen to regularly snoop on your buddies' phones.

And the data is often revelatory. For example, did you know that a third of marriages today originated online? That 52% of people over 30 call for a first date, vs. 23% for those under 30? That a woman finds a man who’s “uncertainly” attracted to her more attractive than a guy who already digs her? Much crazy stuff like that in there.

Why did I find this book so compelling? Well, if the definition of brilliant is “someone who thinks just like me”, then Aziz and Eric must be geniuses. But besides corroborating a lot of the thoughts I’ve had about dating and romance over the past 10 years, here’s what else I really like about this book:

-- They put the highlights of the teachings of top experts on dating, love, relationships and happiness all in one spot. So, unlike me, now you don’t have to go read all of the books by Helen Fisher, Esther Perel, Barry Schwartz, Sheena Iyengar, Sherry Turkle, Dan Savage, Stephanie Coontz, Jonathan Haidt, and Christian Rudder, you lucky duck.

-- They do a very balanced, lucid treatment of online dating opportunities and pitfalls. Hey look, you now have so much choice! Choice is good! And that overabundance of choice via Match and Tinder and OKCupid and FarmersOnly can also be debilitating and lead to long-term misery and loneliness, for reasons they explain very well.

-- They make a lot of sensible recommendations. For example, on a first date, it’s not necessary to feel a thousand butterflies exploding in your stomach as a signal that you two are a good match. Go on more second and third dates. Give stuff a chance to develop and stuff.

One of my favorite parts of the book are the stories of what modern dating is like in other parts of the world. Just in case you think you’ve got it bad:

--In Qatar, there is no dating. A woman’s only escape ticket from her parent’s home is marriage. But that just means getting stuck with a husband (i.e. a total stranger, ‘cause remember, there’s no dating) who’s even more controlling and possessive than her parents. Modern solution: using smartphones to arrange clandestine hotel parties, where young people can actually meet and flirt with one another.

-- Japan is seriously whacked out. As of 2013, 45% of young women and 25% of men “were not interested or despised sexual contact.” The government is so worried about population decline that it actually sponsors massive, roving group dates called “machikon”, just so singles can meet one another.

-- I was not aware that Buenos Aires was just one big sex-drenched flirtathon, with hyperaggressive males ceaselessly catcalling women and “telos” (hourly love hotels) on every corner that oversubscribe at peak hours (3-4am).

-- In France, apparently it’s perfectly normal for a woman to receive a text asking “Fancy a shag?” from a guy she’s met at a bar, and perfectly normal for her to answer “oui” or “non” depending on her mood. Also, they just kinda assume infidelity happens and get less worked up about it than all other nationalities.

Although this is primarily a descriptive book, not a prescriptive one, Aziz and Eric do give some concrete pointers for navigating the landscape of love in the digital world. For example, I like their empirically-derived guidelines for effective texting: issue a firm and specific invitation; make reference to your prior conversation; inject humor.

And this is what I found to be their most salient bit of advice: “Treat potential partners like actual people, not bubbles on a screen.” In other words, treat people like people, people! This encapsulates the sane, generous and wise spirit of a book about an aspect of life that has a lot of potential to turn irrational, mean and short-sighted -- especially with all the gadgets at our disposal. As such, all of you single folks would do well set aside your smartphone for a sec to get some tips, much wisdom and many guffaws from “Modern Romance.”

Most complete theoretical book
By Ivo
This seems like the most complete theoretical book on Qi Men Dun Jia written in english.
Joey Yap has a group of scientists/researchers called Joey Yap research team.
They scientifically prove and track what feng shui things give what outcome.
Joey exchanged this knowledge he has gained from the research with the knowledge of old Qi Men Dun Jia masters
in Hong Kong and other places. He is the only one who has studied Qi Men with different masters. So he has a wide view on the subject.
This book is most comprehensive theoretical book and it is so complete because the theory points to ALL applications of Qi Men.
Anyone who wants to seriously study the theory before reading books about the various applications, this is your book!
Congrats to Joey on a book well written.

The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because of the price. Joey's books are commercial and overpriced most of the time.
This one is also overpriced in my opinion. At the other hand, this book contains a wealth of knowledge.
You can buy it at the Joey Yap Store, but I suggest you wait for it to be available for purchase at amazon because they offer a lower price.

I also want to adress that QMDJ is probably the most difficult of all chinese metaphysical practises.
It's better and easier for the reader if they already have a good foundation in both Bazi and Feng Shui before reading any Qi Men books.

Swift Injustice: The Craig Titus Story, by Tracy Mitchell-Milam

When the prosecutor repeatedly proclaimed, "The victim was beaten, tasered, body- slammed, injected, choked, duct-taped, and then burned in the back of a car," the media was ready to persecute Craig Titus for a crime he did not commit. The high-profile case involved a famous bodybuilder, turned reality-television- star, caught in a possible love triangle that ended in an overdose and a drug-fueled cover-up. With the world watching, the homicide detectives and district attorney's office rushed to judgment, and charged Craig Titus with the crime of Murder. Without any physical evidence to prove that a murder had actually taken place, and before the final autopsy and toxicology reports were released, the overzealous prosecutor leaked inaccurate information to the media. From there, the trial played out in the media, before the case ever made it to court. When the autopsy results did not support the State's theory of murder, the prosecutor stacked the charges and added kidnapping, making it a capital offense. Craig Titus was arrested in 2005 and sentenced in 2008. So what happened in the years leading up to the final court date? Swift Injustice fills in the blanks by providing details about the tragic events that unfolded in December of 2005 to the plea deal and sentence for Second Degree Murder in 2008. In the end, the prosecutor built his political campaign around the case, and the judge walked away with a court television show. The Judge's television show was called Swift Justice. Unfortunately for Craig Titus, justice was neither swift nor just; it was Swift Injustice.

I have been waiting for the release of this book since it was first announced. I assumed there was more to the death of Melissa James than the public reports had revealed. When the book finally arrived I started reading it immediately. I struggled to continue reading the book after the 67 page introduction where the author strongly criticized the police and prosecutors bias without acknowledging her own. I forced myself to complete 5 chapters (I did not finish the book) but could no longer continue to read the repetitive, excessively detail-driven, Pro-Titus content.

A must read for those who want to read an unbiased opinion and actual facts of the unfortunate events of that day. I had been waiting for this book to come out and when it did, was definitely not a disappointment. Made for great reading. The author's detail of accounts and facts from her research left me not wanting to put the book down! The title is unquestionably fitting.

I cant put it down. This book states the facts. It does not appear to be one sided. Everything is backed up by public records and court documentation. This author exposes the crooked judicial system and does not sugar coat anything in Craig Titus's life. Its a must read and a real eye opener. I can not believe what the justice system gets away with.

Adventurous, addictive and wholly romantic
By Laurel Ann
At first glance, it is easy to see why some modern readers might overlook ROSS POLDARK, the primogenial novel in Winston Graham’s THE NOVELS OF CORNWALL family saga. Originally published in 1945, most seventy-year-old books are now long forgotten. Its main character is a man—when to appeal to its primary audience most historical fiction is carried by a female protagonist. The setting can be off putting too. It begins in 1783, a difficult and depressing time in English history after the loss of the American Colonies, when social, political and economic upheaval crippled the country. Fueled, by angst, obsession and regret, it is about as far removed from the refined country drawing rooms, witty repartee and genteel romance found in Jane Austen novels as it could be.

Despite these questionable first impressions, this novel and its eponymous hero have “legs.” It has never gone out of print and continues to build a fan base, mostly generated from the 1975 – 1977 landmark television adaptation, Poldark, starring Robin Ellis. And now after forty years the BBC and PBS have joined forces again for a reboot of this very popular classic starring Aidan Turner as the swashbuckling hero. With so much clout behind it, who could not be tempted to see what the original novel was all about?

Set in Cornwall, Royal Army officer Captain Ross Poldark returns home a scarred and weary soldier from fighting in the American Revolutionary War. It is a disheartening homecoming. His father Joshua has recently died, his sweetheart Elizabeth Chynoweth is engaged to his cousin Francis Poldark and his inheritance, the family residence, farmland and tin mines lie totally derelict. There does not appear to be any reason for him to stay.

The local economy does not fare much better. The tin and copper mines owned by the landed gentry are in serious decline while nouveau riche banker George Warleggan prospers by extending credit, foreclosing and building a financial empire on the hard work of others. Bonded to the land, his tenants and the hope that Elizabeth will return to him, the temptation to leave and take the easy road is not even a serious option for this Poldark. With the help of two of his father’s idle servants, Jud and Prudie Paynter and a street urchin turned kitchen maid Demelza Carne, Ross fights to rebuild his pride and his family fortune.

“Looking east, upon Hendrawna Beach, the sea was very clam today: a smokey grey with here and there patches of violet and living, moving green. The waves were shadows, snakes under a quilt, creeping in almost unseen until they emerged in milky ripple at the waters edge.” (p. 33)

Surprisingly, we are immediately drawn in by author Winston Graham’s opening chapters. His writing is succinct, lyrical and hypnotic. He throws so much adversity in our hero’s path that we cannot help but root for the underdog. We learn early on that Ross Poldark is not your typical landed gentry. He may have left for the war a young ensign with a dubious reputation, but he returned two years later a seasoned captain—a mature leader of men tempered by British injustice and influenced by the ideals of liberty and equality by the American patriots. Deeply committed to helping the local villagers, his proletariat views are not welcomed by his own class. In his mind, what is right to be done cannot be done soon enough regardless of the consequences. He abhors aristocrats and their privileged way of life—delighting in thumbing his nose at them in scandalous ways.

About half-way into the novel we realize that Captain Ross Poldark could be an iconic romantic hero to rival Mr. Darcy, Mr. Rochester and John Thornton. He’s handsome. He’s rebellious. He’s broody. He’s the dark Poldark; the one with the youthful reputation as a wastrel, gamester and smuggler clutching at his left shoulder. He drinks and thinks way too much, and his cousin Verity, the only family member to visit him, is deeply concerned for his welfare.

Ross reaches a low point in his life at the wedding of his beloved Elizabeth to his cousin Francis. “All of the time at the back of his mind had been the half conviction that somehow the wedding would not be. It was as hard to believe as if someone had told him he was going to die.” (p. 44) During the wedding banquet at his uncle’s estate, Trenwith, while a cock fight is underway in the dining room for the amusement of the guests, Ross seeks out an encounter with Elizabeth who attempts to explain her decision to not follow through with their youthful promises to each other.

“There is no time to explain everything; perhaps I couldn’t explain it if there were. But I do want you to try to forgive me for any unhappiness I may have caused you.”

“There is nothing to forgive,” said Ross. “There was no formal undertaking.” (p. 48)

This conversation, and their choices of how to deal with the situation, foreshadows their continued, tormented relationship—her fickle nature and need to please her family and society, and his poker-faced indignation against adversity. Each of these personality foibles are the backbone of this story; while there are many other characters and subplots churning throughout the novel, it all comes back to Elizabeth’s decision to marry another man and Ross’s obsession to possess her.

Author Winston Graham’s writing is superb. Fast faced, descriptive and engaging, his style is a clever blending of both literary and commercial fiction. He particularly excels at multi-character scenes where the action and dialogue joyfully skips about a room. The Truro Assembly Room ball is one of our favorites. In the course of one chapter we are introduced to Cornwall’s polished society bathed in candlelight and decked out in elegant frocks and swaggering finery. Here we witness polite conversation and scurrilous gossip, flirtations and put-downs; meet a scheming mother with five unwed daughters, a handsome captain courting an on-the-shelf spinster and our hero Ross, scandalously dancing more than two times with a young, ambitious debutante, then fleeing the scene in anguish upon the arrival of Elizabeth and Francis. “Elizabeth’s beauty struck him afresh. The fact that another man should be in full enjoyment of her was like the torture of damnation.” (p. 64) Sullen and brooding, he arrives at a local tavern to drown his sorrows in brandy and the local light skirt.

This scene is as close as we get to anything remotely resembling a Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer novel. Refined society is not where Ross Poldark chooses to spend his time, nor does Winston Graham. This story is about money, or the lack of it, the shifting fortunes and social standing of the ruling classes, and the emotional forces that drive men to achieve success and the women that they desire. Along the way we learn a lot about late eighteenth-century copper and tin mining in Cornwall while swash and buckling through fist fights, riots, prison breaks, duels, poaching and pillaging. After all, this is a man’s story and we certainly see life through Ross Poldark’s manly eyes. When he rescues thirteen-year-old street urchin Demelza, and her mongrel dog Garrick at the Redruth Fair from a gang of bullies, we begin to see that there might be a softer side. Nobly, he feeds her and offers her a ride home to her father.

“They reached a break in the track. Ahead lay the way to Illugan; the right fork would bring him to skirt St. Ann’s whence he could join the usual lane to Swale.” (p. 75)

Before they part, he generously offers her a job as his kitchen maid. She gladly accepts, if only to get out of the thrashing that awaits her at home. Unknowingly, he has reached an important juncture in his life and it will never be the same after this point. Society is scandalized by his altruistic actions, thinking he has taken her for carnal reasons, but he holds firm and pays her greedy father her annual wages. She brings life to his lonely home with her youthful energy, humor and dedication to him. It will redeem his embittered soul.

When after three years of service her father wants his daughter back, and commands her to return, Demelza must comply. Heartbroken, she is certain that Nampara is her home now and that she cannot leave Ross. She loves him, even though he has never shown her anything but the respect that a master owes their servant. Desperate to stay, her first attempt at coquetry is a painful failure. Ross is angered and confused. “He felt like someone who had adopted a tiger cub without knowing what it would grow into.” (p. 215) Concerned by her flirtations he angrily tells her,

“You know what people say of you, Demelza?”

She shook her head. “What?”

“If you act like this, what they say of you will become true.”

She looked at him, candidly this time, without coquetry and without fear. “I live only for you, Ross.” (p. 217)

If you read one historical fiction novel this year, let it be Ross Poldark. Adventurous, addictive and wholly romantic, history buffs will applaud Graham’s meticulous research, Jane Austen fans will delight in the witty repartee and humor, and romance readers will swoon over the discovery of an iconic romantic hero truly worthy of wearing the mantle.

Ross Poldark to the Rescue
By Judge Tabor
The first book in the Poldark Series by Winston Graham does not disappoint. It's been awhile since I've taken on the reading of a saga, but after watching the Masterpiece Theater Series based on these books and being an avid reader, I was sunk beyond recall. Ross Poldark has been serving England's war machine for three years in the colonies. He returns home after suffering some wounds - one to his leg and one to his head which has left a long scar down the left side of his face. He soon learns his father has passed, his home is in shambles and the love of his young life, Elizabeth, is now engaged to marry his cousin, Francis, the son of his Uncle Charles - the elder brother of his father - and the one who inherited most of the Poldark family's wealth.

The characteristic that stands out in Ross and which runs true through the first four novels in this series (that's as far as I've read) is that he has a highly volatile and passionate nature - sometimes to a fault. He's unhappy with the ruin of the estate he's inherited, he's unhappy with his slothful servants, Jud and Prudie, and he's unhappy with the fact he has no funds to help the tenants on his estate. But mostly, he's very unhappy and angry that he's lost Elizabeth - the fact she's marrying his cousin with whom he's always had a very friendly relationship simply adds insult to injury.

This passionate nature has its benefits and the reader is treated to instance after instance of how Ross goes about investing his energy in trying to do all the good he can to those within his sphere, albeit often coming across as a ruffian rather than a gentleman. There are several examples of Ross's goodwill but the one that is spotlighted in this book and the one which will eventually forever change his life, is the day he steps in to rescue a filthy and lice-ridden girl, Demelza, from being tormented by young ruffians. At the time Demelza is 13 years old and obviously has been beaten regularly by her father as evidenced from the scars on her back. Ross simply cannot allow her to return to her family without giving her another option so he offers to hire her as a serving wench in his home. His behavior often confuses the gentry society of which he has long been a part and his rescue and offer of a home to Demelza results in sordid rumors about why he has her there but Ross simply does not care. He has his reasons and they are quite innocent - he's a rescuer pure and simple and as these stories unfold, this type of behavior will occur over and over.

In addition to Ross's tendency toward rescue, he's tied into the land and the people who've worked in the two family mines - now shut down. Much of the storyline is dedicated to the business maneuverings in which he involves himself in attempts to get one of his mines - Wheal Leisure - up and working in order to employ the area's starving families and earn some money for his own household. He has hindrances to his efforts - the rich and powerful Warleggan family of bankers - who will continue to cause him problems throughout the series. To further complicate matters is his now tenuous relationship with Uncle Charles, Francis and Elizabeth especially since Francis and George Warleggan are very close friends - with George continually manipulating Francis. The one bright shining light in the family is his sweet cousin, Verity, who is a woman of good sense who shows herself to be a true friend to Ross through thick and thin. The fact Verity falls hard for an "unacceptable to her family" captain of a packet vessel, causes ongoing difficulties for Verity throughout the course of the first two novels.

**Spoilerish**
Since this book covers four years, eventually Demelza grows up into a fascinating young woman who is generous, kind, fairy-like and very hard-working. She knows no other real love than her lord and master, Ross. He's been the only person who's ever been kind to her and she's loyal to the bone. However, when she begins to have feelings for Ross such as a young woman feels for a man, she eventually attempts to stir his interest which leads to one night together. Ross has mixed feelings about his part in the matter, but in a short time, he decides to take Demelza as his wife. This causes some major issues with the local gentry and within Demelza because both feel Ross has married beneath him. Ross, however, goes about in his customary ambivalent manner, assuring Demelza that she needs to consider herself better than she does and making no excuses to anyone for his choice of a wife. Demelza's feelings about her lack of social expertise is severely strained when Ross insists they join Francis and Elizabeth for Christmas. Amazingly, she comes through like a champ after receiving some help from Verity in social manners, a new dress and being simply "Demelza." Before long Ross realizes that Demelza has captured his heart - perhaps not quite in the manner Elizabeth still does - but enough that he brings himself to tell Demelza he loves her and indeed he treats her very well, they enjoy life together and Demelza tells Ross she is pregnant with their first child.

The setting of these books is Cornwall - an area which has always fascinated me. Should I ever travel to England, Cornwall is one of the top three places I would love to visit. I look forward to reading the next books in this series. It's obvious that Ross will continue to rescue many others even as he struggles to find his own personal happiness.

Love the PBS Series Love the Books
By Deb McNaughton
I saw the first season of the PBS series before reading the books, so my views are shaped by my admiration for the program. This book covers about a half of season one. What I appreciate most about this series is the complexity of the characters that Graham created. These people are real to me. The main characters have flaws that are believable. They struggle through difficult times and make decisions based on the circumstances of their status and upbringing at the time. So many historical fiction novels are written like costume dramas where the morays of today are imposed on a prior century. Poldark does not do that and therefore allows the reader to sink into the era and experience their struggles first-hand. It's as if Graham had actually written the books in the 18th century. At its heart, it's a love story and entails many different relationships woven together. There's nothing sappy about the story - every morsel of happiness is hard won. If you watch the TV series, the books follow the story fairly closely with more detail in the book. You should read this book with the expectation to read the entire series, because the story ends abruptly and without a real finish. I've now read several in the series and find they all end this way. You have to be in it for the long-haul. BTW, I listened to this book on audio and the reader is very good. While this first book is read by a man, there is a female reader for book 2 (Dimelsa). It took me by surprise at first, but she was very good, too. The male voice comes back for book 3. If you are an audio reader like me, you will like the presentation.

What Does It Mean to Be White?: Developing White Racial Literacy - Revised Edition (Counterpoints), by Robin DiAngelo

What does it mean to be white in a society that proclaims race meaningless, yet is deeply divided by race? In the face of pervasive racial inequality and segregation, most white people cannot answer that question. In the second edition of this seminal text, Robin DiAngelo reveals the factors that make this question so difficult: mis-education about what racism is; ideologies such as individualism and colorblindness; segregation; and the belief that to be complicit in racism is to be an immoral person. These factors contribute to what she terms white racial illiteracy. Speaking as a white person to other white people, DiAngelo clearly and compellingly takes readers through an analysis of white socialization. Weaving research, analysis, stories, images, and familiar examples, she provides the framework needed to develop white racial literacy. She describes how race shapes the lives of white people, explains what makes racism so hard to see, identifies common white racial patterns, and speaks back to popular narratives that work to deny racism. Written as an accessible overview on white identity from an anti-racist framework, What Does It Mean to Be White? is an invaluable resource for members of diversity and anti-racism programs and study groups, and students of sociology, psychology, education, and other disciplines. This revised edition features two new chapters, including one on DiAngelo’s influential concept of white fragility. Written to be accessible both within and without academia, this revised edition also features discussion questions, an index, and a glossary.

Review
«Rarely will one find an analysis of whiteness (and the problems associated with it) that is as comprehensive as this one. From incisive and wide-ranging critiques of how white folks deflect, deny, and evade the topic of racism, and the implications of our own racial identity and position, to an absolutely on-point interrogation of how racism and whiteness influence white teachers-in-training, and thus, the larger educational process, Robin DiAngelo demonstrates the kind of clarity of thought so needed on this important subject.» (Tim Wise, Author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son and Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority )
«This book goes well beyond Diversity Training 101. It is filled with comprehensive knowledge and useful tools for understanding racism and white people s role in it. An invaluable resource for every educator, student, practitioner, and concerned citizen; you will be better prepared to address all forms of oppression after reading this book.» (Eddie Moore, Founder of The White Privilege Conference)
«With directness, sensitivity, and clarity, Robin DiAngelo leads the reader through a series of challenging and revelatory discussions that have profound implications for teaching and learning in today's classrooms. Her question, What does it mean to be white? , underscores the pressing need for honest dialogue, particularly among white educators, about this tremendously important topic. I hope every teacher has the opportunity to read this book. Both they, and the students they teach, will be the better for it.» --Sonia Nieto, Professor Emerita, Language, Literacy, and Culture, School of Education, University of Massachusetts and Author of The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural Learning Communities )

Necessary read
By KRS
I am only seventy pages in and I can tell that buying this book is going to be a watershed moment in my life. Race is such an uncomfortable topic for white people to talk about. DiAngelo has a way of broaching these conversations in a way that doesn't sugarcoat but also doesn't put her white audience on the defense. My only criticism is that the price is very steep. I am not saying that the book is not worth the cost, just that I feel like the cost of the book makes it inaccessible to many.

Agree with previous reviews, this is a must-read for anyone born in the United States! DiAngelo does an excellent job of using anecdotes, hard data, and theory to help the reader understand racism as a system and white privilege as inevitable. As a white person, no matter where you are in your journey of waking up to these realities, this book will be helpful to you.

Relevant case studies will be presented and analyzed to illustrate the following: how to optimize a lead compound whether one has high or low levels of structural information; how to derive hits from competitors’ active compounds or from natural ligands of the targets; how to springboard from competitors’ SAR knowledge in lead optimization; how to design a ligand to interfere with protein-protein interactions by correctly examining the PPI interface; how to circumvent IP blockage using data mining; how to construct and fully utilize a knowledge-based molecular descriptor system; how to build a reliable QSAR model by focusing on data quality and proper selection of molecular descriptors and statistical approaches. A Practical Guide to Rational Drug Design focuses on computational drug design, with only basic coverage of biology and chemistry issues, such as assay design, target validation and synthetic routes.
