Even longtime fans can learn a thing or two...or three

Kudos to author Paul Myers for his incisive and informative new work, "A Wizard, A True Star," which, as the subtitle indicates, focuses primarily on Rundgren's production career. This is no techno-garbled, casual-fans-not-apply book, however: interspersed within the production stories (all fascinating and non-technical) are biographical snippets which will come as revelations to fans. As a 30-year follower myself, I discovered facts about Rundgren which I had not known up until reading this book.

Myers' style is succinct and to the point which makes for a quick and entertaining read. Moreover, the book is esthetically well-made with quality binding and excellent photographs prefacing the text which, again, are new to me as a bona fide Rundgren fanatic and will be welcome viewing to all TR fans.

My only complaint---and it is a minor one---is the speed with which Myers seems to close the book: the last few years of Rundgren's career are dashed off rapidly with little emphasis put on his production efforts with Jill Sobule, Splender, 12 Rods and Bad Religion or his own solo works. Also noticeably absent is any reference to the aborted TR-produced project by Julie Christensen. These are small quibbles, however. The coverage of more well-known TR productions (Meat Loaf, Badfinger, Psychedelic Furs, Grand Funk, Patti Smith) are well worth the price of the book alone.

"A Wizard, A True Star" is quite excellent and informative. If you are a Todd Rundgren fan---or a rock music buff---this work belongs in your collection.

Satisfyingly informative.

This book is wonderfully informative regarding Todd Rundgren's historic (can I say mind-boggling?) recording career, very often quoting Todd himself in addition to so many other legends that have had the privilege of working with him. It even includes several equipment lists for all those tech-head fans.

Myers fills in a lot of blind spots and missing puzzle pieces in Todd's career that I always wondered about. For instance, the details of his days in L.A. on Astral Drive during the "Something/Anything" recordings, and the time he lived and worked in Sausalito during the "Nearly Human" days, are both satisfactorily covered here -- among many more classic eras. The entire book is an enjoyable read no matter what your favorite Todd "era" happens to be. Overall it's well-written, professional, revealing and smartly designed with a nice, rugged cover. Just what a legend like Todd Rundgren deserves.

Essential reading for Todd fans!

Kudos to Paul Myers for his incisive and well-written portrait chronicling Todd Rundgren's seminal work in the studio, as a solo artist and with Utopia. Impeccably researched, Myers garnered hands-on participation from "The Runt" himself along with a wealth of other Rundgren related folks, from XTC to Grand Funk, Hall & Oates to Cheap Trick, The Band's Robbie Robertson to Joey Molland of Badfinger, all adding to the grand and expansive tapestry of rememberances to create this must read.

One of music's most criminally underrated artists, Todd Rundgren is a national treasure. "A Wizard, A True Star: Todd Rundgren in the Studio" is a grand slam, and succeeds in honoring the artist's sweeping musical achievements. Highly recommended.

About the Author
GRAHAM GREENE was born in 1904. He worked as a journalist and critic, and in 1940 became literary editor of the Spectator. He was later employed by the Foreign Office. As well as his many novels, Graham Greene wrote several collections of short stories, four travel books, six plays, three books of autobiography, two of biography and four books for children. He also wrote hundreds of essays, and film and book reviews. Graham Greene was a member of the Order of Merit and a Companion of Honour. He died in April 1991.

Classic Greene in a sultry setting

I didn't enjoy this novel quite as much as commentators such as Anthony Bourdain indicated I would; not as much, for example, as 'Our Man In Havana' or 'The Ministry of Fear'. Perhaps the denouement wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped but it's still classic Greene and, as always the characterisation is brilliant. The author's writerly craft is masterful and yet largely invisible to the reader. The Hotel Trianon setting itself almost becomes a character - that's quite something considering Greene, as always, is economical with his descriptions, virtually giving the reader's imagination free rein. 'The Comedians' irked Haiti's François "Papa Doc" Duvalier to such an extent that he felt compelled to publicly insult Greene. For that reason alone 'The Comedians' is of historical importance. But arguably more vital than that, it's a literary entertainment of a kind that's rare if not extinct nowadays.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

This is a late review and I won't go over what has already been said about this novel. Papa Doc's reign of terror is now historical fact. But if one reads this tight political thriller and one of Greene's best, you can see history repeating itself in the not too recent Hussein reign of terror or go back on a grander scale to Hitler. It goes on and on and THE COMEDIANS deliberately gives the main characters a "no name" status--common with no first names. They are people who hide themselves behind comedic masks and at times tell funny stories while the terror of the Touton Mocteuc consumes everything around them.

We are fortunate there is a paperback edition of this classic still available in print. It is a must read to learn the valuable lessons of the past. When the book was written, it was immediate and hard hitting. The author has visited Haiti twice and before finishing it, Papa Doc heard of the book and refused him entrance into the country, so the book ends on a boat leaving the country which was probably not the author's original ending due to his inability to enter Haiti again.

A very important book for all. A must read. As I stated, I am not giving plot summary or details that have been written about previously in 20 some reviews, just an overview of the book and the impact it still maintains after 40 years.

Compelling In Every Respect

From the characters with their bland names and complex personalities to the horrors of Papa Doc's Haiti, and a lot of intrigue in between, this is a compelling and wonderful novel. Greene reveals through his parade of characters the currents that ebb and flow through the personalities of lonely, rootless people who strive for more than just survival in a hell on earth: Greene's "comedians." Despite its title, this is not a lighthearted book filled with laughter. It's deadly serious, comedic only in what it reveals about human nature. Not having read most of Greene's body of work, I can't evaluate how this novel rates in comparison to other works by him. What I CAN say is that this is an outstanding novel that kept me riveted from start to finish.

Difficult reading, filled with distracting errors

I am a graduate student in Math and was attracted to the book because it treats topics -- wavelets of rank other than 2, tilings, and others -- that are missing from many of the standard texts. Wavelets are approached through the introduction of matrices with certain algebraic properties rather than through orthonormal bases in L2 or scaling functions.

Interesting, say I. This will give me a different perspective on many of the basic results and let me read some papers I've been struggling with.

The book, however, did not fully live up to my expectations. Many difficult concepts are introduced in a cursory way, and the proofs skip a lot of details. This is not uncommon in graduate level texts, as it is expected that the reader can fill in the gaps. When I filled in the gaps, however, I discovered more than a few errors. Often, these were just distractions such as missing or incorrect constants. But at least one proof contained more serious errors.

Graduate level math is hard enough without having to figure out what the authors *meant* to say. I would advise a student of my level of sophistication to look elsewhere.

One of the best!

The Wells-Resnikoff book on wavelets is in my opinion
one of the best:-- both with regard to the math--the proofs and all that!--, and the applications. The ideas in the book are timeless, and, I expect, it will be a great book for decades to come. It is very strong on both scores. And it is beautifully written: It is all there,- the history, the
motivation, the philosophical points, the applications, the guided tours with friendly author-explainations of what it is all about. For me, this book was a page-turner. I read it on
a long plane flight,- on my way to a wavelet conference in Guangzhou, China. -- And I didn't have jet-lag when I arrived
more than a day later. It may be a bit demanding on some students, but it will be well worth their effort!

Not good.

If the authors were less enthusiastic about mathematics for its own sake, they probably would have written a better book. This one is said to be suitable for undergraduates, but I don't think so. I have a master's degree in electrical engineering, and several of the mathematical concepts they mention were just vaguely familiar names to me. That would be OK if I were persuaded that those concepts were essential to an understanding of wavelets, but I'm not. The book seems somewhat ill organized as well; new terminology should be defined before it's used, not fifty pages later.

The Best Books for TEFL / TESL!

I started using these books with the first edition. I primarily have used them in EFL situations, whereas Molinsky and Bliss's Expressways series works best for ESL situations.

I fell in love with them simply because they have a very indirect way of approaching grammar, so a teacher has freedom to emphasize grammar as much as wanted. Most other textbooks will have only one or two sample dialogs for practice. Side by Side usually has six or more. I found it easy to expand upon Side by Side dialogs by reversing an answer from positive to negative, changing the time-tense/aspect of a dialog. Because the books are based on a functional-notional approach for each chapter, it is also easy to expand upon the chapters in that way as well. Each chapter deals with certain topics in common life. Those topics can be expanded upon. It is easy to do pairwork as well as small group work with these books.

The workbook complements the textbook very well, including a lot of extra contents for listening and speaking. The recordings that can go with the books are also very good, using a large variety of different people for the conversations. They are set up so that students can "repeat after me."

By no means go without the teacher's book! While the student books can be used well by themselves, the teacher's books are fantastic sources of practical information about how to teach with Side by Side. The teacher's books make it easy for a new teacher to really develop practical skills and methods to teach, as well as for the more experienced teacher to expand skills with.

I should mention that I have never met Steven Molinsky nor Bill Bliss. But I have had literally hundreds of students that were grateful that I found and learned to teach with Side by Side!

Easy to Use for an English Learners class

Like Book 1 in this series, this book is very detailed and provides for a lot of practice in reading, writing, and the interplay of conversation. The colored pictures help make the lesson objective clear as well as entertaining. Because it is written in English and because there are more examples than written English rules, it is perfect for a class format (not so much for home study). There are many opportunities for conversation, especially in comparision of cultures. Great book.

Jon Edwards explains all that you will need to know with concrete examples and simple instructions. After that, how strong a chess player, how good a chess teacher, how good a chess author you become is truly up to you.

Jon Edwards has written more than a dozen chess books, notably including The Chess Analyst (Thinkers Press, 1999) which chronicles the success in the US championship, Teach Yourself Visually: Chess (Wiley, 2006), a photographically based chess primer, and Sacking the Citadel: The History, Theory, and Practice of the Classic Bishop Sacrifice (Russell Enterprises, 2011). The Chessbase Bible

I have been writing about chess for 40 years and have been using chessbase for the last decade, but being an old folk, there were many mysteries to chessbase. The whole thing confused me, and the instruction book was, to say the least, not user friendly. I didn't realize I was only using about 10% of the possibilities. Jon Edwards' book is a life-saver for the chessbase challenged. I now do things I've never done before, including the file/saving systems and the internet possibilities and the free chess engines help. He could have called it Chessbase for Dummies, but that would trivialize what he's done here. It really is complete. The snapshots of the screen along with the clear explanations were a huge help. If you have chessbase, this is your Bible.

Essential for novice ChessBase users

I agree with another reviewer that something similar to this should have been included with the ChessBase package as a manual. But ChessBase hasn't included it and hence the need for this book, particularly for novice users. If you're using ChessBase 12 (soon to be reincarnated as ChessBase 13) and want a slick explanation of how various features of ChessBase 12 can be used for searching, training, annotating, publishing, and playing purposes, then this book's for you. It's not a great book but it's an essential one. ChessBase is what Edwards used to write that phenomenal book, "Sacking the Citadel." Come to think of it, "Sacking the Citadel" provides an extended example of how to use the search features of ChessBase.

Postscript: I should add that this book is not a reference manual. The author explains how he uses the various features of ChessBase for his purposes (training, teaching, searching, etc.). Thus, various key features of ChessBase are often mentioned en passant, in perfunctory form. For instance, Steve Lopez has online notes on how to use the training feature that is more in-depth than what Edwards gives.The title of the book ("ChessBase Complete") is thus a bit of a misnomer. The book is directed more towards novices than power users.

Essential to newbie Chessbase users

This book has been a long time coming for those of use who aren't fluent in all the uses of Chessbase, a very powerful database for chess players. I don't think I really tried to learn Chessbase until version 12, which came out in the last couple of years. I figured out a few basic functions, but a lot of the handier features were too arcane for me to learn. (there is a manual, and a lot of stuff is in there, but it's written very much like a technical software manual)

Mr. Edwards has taken 14 general features (labeled as 'scenarios'), such position searches, opening preparation, training and teaching, playing on the Playchess server using Chessbase, etc, and explained very clearly how to use Chessbase as a tool to accomplish these activities. The book is full of screenshots, which are most helpful, and he does not make assumptions of the reader. Every function is spelled out.

I found his sections on setting up databases and manipulating them among the most helpful. I can speak from my own experience, it is easy to get confused and frustrated when trying to learn these things just from the manual.

Chessbase is a powerful and fairly complicated piece of software. I'm sure Edwards could easily write a book twice as long explaining many of the useful features. But this is indispensable for the new or confused user. Chessbase is a fairly expensive product as is (especially if you also purchase one of the large databases), it seems to me that buying this book to assist in your learning is a no brainer.
