Excellent overview of electric cars
By Edward Durney
The Electric Car gives an excellent overview of electric cars. And as promised by the subtitle, Westbrook discusses the development and future of battery, hybrid and fuel-cell cars. All in all, this book is the best I have found on this important subject. I recommend it highly.

As interest increases in electric cars, particularly hybrids, books on the subject increase as well. Some are interesting and helpful. A surprisingly large amount are not. Few, if any, match the depth and breadth of the information and opinion in The Electric Car.

Westbrook spent his career working with electric cars. That shows in the book's detailed information and patient discussion. This is a book by an industry insider, who knows what he is talking about. What he does not know, he finds out, through contacts in the industry that he keeps active.

Westbrook does tend a little toward the pedantic. And he loves a long and complex sentence. No fluffy reading here. In fact, the book can be hard to get through if you are tired and not at the best of your game.

Nonetheless, if you have strong interest in electric cars, in my opinion you need this book.

Good introductory book
By Frank
This book provides an accurate history of electric and hybrid cars, however it may be a bit lacking in terms of charting the future of electric cars and their power sources. All in all a solid buy for a intoduction to electric car technology.

works for me, with caveat
By T-Jay
Well written. Slightly outdated for 2011, but a good introduction for me. Not for people without electronics or mechanical knowledge. I don't work in electronics, but I completed a two year electronics tech program. This book speaks to me, but my non-electronics friends wouldn't have a clue what to make of it. The IEE Power & Energy Series is pretty cool in general!

Making Art: Form and Meaning, by Terry Barrett

This comprehensive introduction to art and design explores making artifacts as a process of making meaning. Making Art: Form and Meaning offers a framework for understanding how all the aspects of an artwork--subject matter, medium, form, process, and contexts--interact. The text's wide array of examples and its emphasis on late-modernism and postmodern art give students a thorough look at the expressive possibilities of traditional design elements and principles and contemporary practices, including the use of computer-based, time-based, and lens-based media.

With artist quotes, clearly defined key terms, and a chapter dedicated to studio critiques, Making Art allows students to join the conversation of contemporary art and gives them a jump start in thinking and talking about their work using the language and concepts of today's art world.

This book along with other Berret's book titled 'Why is that Art?' is a comprehensive introduction to art and design student. Simply to clarifying the mind for studying art/design by categorizing the elements of art making and meaning into : Subject Matter (content), Form, Context and Medium. It would be fruitful for student alike who willing to learn about writing his own artist statement on a more scholarly-based. =)

Amazon.com Review
Having more stories from A.E. van Vogt repackaged and reprinted can only be good news: along with Heinlein and Asimov, this prolific, wild-eyed author deserves much of the credit for pioneering science fiction's golden age back in the '40s and '50s. As a sort of crazy old uncle of modern sci-fi, though, van Vogt doesn't always get his due: his writing wasn't always spectacular, his plot and pacing fell somewhere between harum-scarum and willy-nilly, and his ideas were delivered in relentless salvos, each more outlandish than the last. But an embarrassment or not, the visionary van Vogt is indisputably part of the family, an entertaining and daring author whose influence can be seen in the work of countless other writers.

This 288-page paperback binds together two of van Vogt's better stories, "The Weapon Makers of Isher" and "The Weapons Shops of Isher," published in sequel-prequel order back in 1946 and 1951. These time-hopping, politically convoluted tales follow the struggle between the oppressive (but beautiful) Empress Innelda and the superadvanced libertarian Weapon Shops ("The right to buy weapons is the right to be free," reads the storefront sign). Much of the melodramatic plot revolves around the Shops' immortal, ultragenius founder Robert Hedrock, his conflict with the Empress, and their differing visions for the future of humanity, but don't fret too much over the details: van Vogt keeps your head comfortably a-swim in a steady stream of whiz-bang gadgetry, plot twists, and breakneck action. --Paul Hughes

Juggernauts and Empresses
By Paul Camp
A.E. van Vogt's _The Empire of Isher_ (2000) is an omnibus of his two Isher novels, _The Weapon Shops of Isher_ (1951) and _The Weapon Makers_ (rev. 1952). The first novel is van Vogt at his operatic best. The second novel is anticlimactic and has considerable plot holes. But together, I suppose, they make passable entertainment.

Perhaps some attention should be given to the construction of the two novels. _Shops_ was was conceived as a fix-up novel and was ultimately based on three magazine stories: "The Seesaw" (_Astounding_, 1941), "The Weapon Shop" (_Astounding_, 1942), and "The Weapon Shops of Isher" (_Thrilling Wonder Stories_, 1949). _Makers_ was conceived as a unified novel and was serialized in _Astounding_ in 1943-- after the first two Weapon Shops stories but before the third story. When the books were published, _Shops_ was published first and _Makers_ second even though they were composed at about the same time.

I have said elsewhere that it is best not to take van Vogt too seriously as a philosophical writer. Readers, for example, who approach the Weapon Shops novels as though they are solemn defenses of the second amendment and the National Rifle Association are missing the point. Van Vogt is an inspired madman; and even at his best, his novels are never terribly rational affairs. (After all, he got his start writing for True Confession magazines, not philosophical journals!)

_The Weapon Shops of Isher_ is part fairy tale, part mad invention, part dream sequence, part kinetic energy, and part libertarian doubletalk. Part of its appeal is that much of the action is told from the point of view of several appealing "little people" with whom we identify. In _The Weapon Makers_, the stage is taken over by supermen, generals, an Empress, a race of powerful, spiderlike aliens, and super-secret spies-- none of whom is terribly interesting or sympathetic.

Moreover, it must be said that the characters in _Makers_ do not act like very impressive supermen or Empresses or politicians. They seem to have all of the ruthlessness but none of the intelligence of a Machiavellian Prince. They often survive more by whim or by chance than by skill or by cunning.

I give _The Weapon Shops of Isher_ a rating of five stars and _The Weapon Makers_ a three star rating for a global rating of four stars. As another reviewer has noted, the pistol on the cover isn't much like the weapons van Vogt describes. Van Vogt's weapons look more like molded knuckle-dusters. John Schoenherr did a much more accurate depiction on an Ace edition of _Weapon Shops_.

"The air was like wine."
By Steve Wyzard
Someone once said that a simple definition of science fiction would be: "ordinary people doing extraordinary things in extraordinary situations". The reader is captivated NOT by strange, futuristic technology, space travel, monsters and aliens, but by how the genre's protagonists live and move about in a world where such possibilities are commonplace. This is why Golden Age pulp sci-fi has so far never translated well to the movie screen. A classic like Asimov's original Foundation series does not consist of action/wars/battles/grotesqueries (which is what movie viewers want), but of well-written, cerebral characters who attempt to discuss and make sense of wild events and mind-bending dilemmas happening all around them. So too is this omnibus edition of A.E.van Vogt's two outstanding novels, "The Weapon Shops of Isher" and "The Weapon Makers". Well-respected but never one of the biggest names of 1940s sci-fi, van Vogt wrote voluminously but never exceeded the scope, imagination, and wonder of this all-too-brief series. He has a devoted readership and has elicited much scholarly discussion, but is mostly dismissed as too "far out" by today's self-congratulating distopians. I will not defend everything he ever wrote (he is definitely an acquired taste), but The Empire of Isher is highly, highly recommended to anyone with an interest in Astounding-era sci-fi and is much more accessible and less bizarre than most of his oeuvre.

Your best introduction to this magical world would be to read van Vogt's original 1942 short story, "The Weapon Shop" (it has been anthologized many times, most significantly in Avon Books' 1971 "The Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume I"). It is one of three stories (from 1941, 1942, and 1949) that were put together with connecting links to form this edition's first book, "The Weapon Shops of Isher". This "fix-up" reads like a mosaic, with 3 storylines weaving together to tell the story of an underground benevolent organization with superior technology that protects and empowers the citizens of a worldwide empire that would otherwise exploit them. Founder/overseer Robert Hedrock must deal with a catalyst (Cayle Clark) who threatens to destroy the financial stability of the Solar System while two innocent bystanders (Chris McAllister and Fara Clark) are caught in the struggle for power between Empress Innelda Isher's corrupt government and the idealistic Weapon Shops. Because the three original stories were all conceived separately, there is a sense of disjointedness in the narrative where major characters and storylines can disappear, then suddenly reappear many chapters later. Nevertheless, the depth and breadth of van Vogt's vision is brilliantly awe-inspiring, and while a quieter book than its sequel, "The Weapon Shops of Isher" is both absorbing yet paradoxical, and fun yet thought-provoking.

The second book, "The Weapon Makers", was conceived as a full-fledged novel in 1943. This raises the questions: is book 1 a prequel to book 2, or is book 2 a sequel to book 1? This writer holds the second possibility, because book 2 answers many of the unusual questions raised in book 1. But then most of book 1 appeared in magazine form in 1949, while book 2 appeared in 1943. Then book 1 was published in novel form in 1951, while book 2 was revised and published in 1952. A paradox, just as van Vogt would have liked it. "The Weapon Makers" features the same world of the Weapon Shops and the Isher Empire with Robert Hedrock, Innelda Isher, and a few minor characters also returning. This is a much wilder ride than the first book. There is much more emphasis on story than on characters, and there is an impossible-to-escape cliff-hanger at the end of seemingly almost every chapter. All-powerful, unbeatable interstellar aliens are also introduced, and of course they never stand a chance. The scenes where Hedrock visits the crooked CEOs of the gigantic firms he secretly owns are both priceless and prophetic, almost ripped from today's business world headlines. Some might consider it a change of premise when the Weapon Shops do not prove to be as altruistic as they are in the first book, but this is a typical van Vogt device where nothing is quite what it seems to be at first. And while I would have loved for the series to have been continued or expanded, "The Weapon Makers" does conclude with a definitive ending.

One final thought. The cover of this omnibus edition depicts a long-barrelled gun, looking very much like real-world firearms or at least a typical movie-style laser blaster. The defensive guns that figure so prominently in the two novels were described by van Vogt as a brass-knuckles type device that fitted easily in the hand, being activated by thought. In the Prologue of "The Weapon Shops of Isher", they are described as: "It was a tiny thing, shaped like a pistol, but with three cubes projecting in a half-circle from the top of the slightly bulbuous firing chamber." Later on, in Chapter 16, we're told of one model: "Notice the flanges on this barrel are little more than bulges." These descriptions of course do not mesh with the cover illustration. It can only be assumed that the publisher did not want to commission a more representative illustration, but do not let that deter you from buying this awesome, visionary sci-fi masterpiece. I've been continuously reading and re-reading these books since the 1980s, and have yet to tire of them.

This is actually a review of _Empire of the Atom_, an SFnal re-telling of Robert Graves's _I Claudius_, and a quite different book, also by Van Vogt.
As to the books at hand, they are some of vV's best, but suffer from all his characteristic faults -- the too frequent plot changes, the endless consipiricies (often where the leaders of two opposed sides are secretly the same person) a society whose economic basis is dubious at best. But it is a page-turner, and one that keeps this reader returning from time to time. A classic that any SF fan should read sometime or other.

In Search of the Trojan War, Updated edition, by Michæl Wood

Tales of Troy and its heroes—Achilles and Hector, Paris and the legendary beauty Helen—have fired the human imagination for 3,000 years. With In Search of the Trojan War, Michael Wood brings vividly to life the legend and lore of the Heroic Age in an archaeological adventure that sifts through the myths and speculation to provide a fresh view of the riches and the reality of ancient Troy.

This gripping story shows why the legend of Troy forms the bedrock of Western culture and why its past is a paradigm of human history. Wood's meticulous scholarly sleuthing yields fascinating evidence about the continuity and development of human civilization in the Aegean and Asia Minor. With its 50 feet of debris resulting from constant rebuilding, human destruction, earthquake, and abandonment, the mound of Troy contains the beginnings and ends of new races and civilizations.

This edition includes a new preface, a new final chapter, and an addendum to the bibliography that take account of dramatic new developments in the search for Troy with the rediscovery, in Moscow, of the so-called Jewels of Helen and the re-excavation of the site of Troy, which began in 1988 and is yielding new evidence about the historical city.

From Publishers Weekly
In this liberally illustrated volume written to accompany a forthcoming PBS series, BBC producer and series narrator Wood, author of In Search of the Dark Ages, etc., explores the origins of Homer's epics and efforts of archeologists to document the historic truth of the Bronze Age Trojan War as celebrated in the Iliad. Oral tradition and accounts by poets, he notes, have yet to be disproved by archeology. He cites the fascination which the Trojan story has exercised throughout history and on travelers of all periodsByron among them. Despite archeologist Heinrich Schliemann's exaggerations, the author credits him with the development of modern archeology into a science. Schliemann's finds and those of other archeologists of Mycenaean, Minoan and Hittite civilizations are discussed in some detail. Troy, Wood speculates, may have been one of many cties sacked by the Greeks for economic reasons, and Helen one of the many women captured. 50,000 first printing; History Book Club main selection; BOMC and Macmillan's Natural Science alternates.

From Library Journal
Written to complement a BBC-TV series scheduled to begin on PBS this month, Wood's book is essentially an investigation of the historical reality, if any, behind the legend of Troy and the Trojan War. Though not a professional archaeologist, Wood shows a fine grasp of the various problems presented by the Homeric epics, and writes well about sometimes complicated archaeological, linguistic, and historical matters. At times his presentation is a bit repetitious, but those interested in the attempts of individuals such as Schliemann, Dorpfeld, Blegen, and Evans to explore sites thought to be those connected by Homer with the Trojan War will find a lively and sometimes speculative account based on current scholarship. A useful introduction for nonspecialists to areas of continuing scholarly debate. Jackson P. Hershbell, Classical Studies Dept., Univ. of Minnestoa, Minneapolis

An excellent overview of this subject.
By thaney@erols.com
I first purchased this book when it was first published, and to give you an idea how much I enjoyed it I also purchased the new edition. While I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Kenny's review it should be noted that to the small royal citadel of only 5 or so acres described in the first editon there should be added a lower fortified town encompassing a further 45 acres. These new finds, showing Troy to be significantly larger in scale than even Mycenae and thus a major Anatolian citadel even more in keeping with Homer's descriptions are addressed in the new edition.

A succinct search for the history behind the Trojan War
By A. Whitehead
The Trojan War holds a grip on the imagination like few other events in mythology. Part of the modern interest in the myth is due to the startling confirmation over the past century that Troy was a real place, located exactly where the legend puts it, with even minor details of topography from Homer's text backed up by archaeological evidence. This makes Troy a fascinating subject to discuss, but also a dangerous one: it's too easy to let the imagination run riot and conclude that perhaps the legend is a true story, that Agamemnon and Achilles were real people, and the survivors of Troy did go on to found Rome.

Back in the mid-1980s Michael Wood produced a TV documentary for the BBC based on the premise that the Trojan War was a real even that took place approximately in the 12th Century BC. This accompanying book and its later second and third editions expanded on the idea: Wood proposes that Troy was a client-state of the Hittite Empire that fell prey to a series of incursions into Asia Minor by the Greeks, at that time dominated by Mycenae. Mycenae was reaching the zenith of its power and in fact would soon face a rapid decline and collapse. In one of its last expansions of power it tried to expand its empire into the Near East whilst the Hittites were distracted by clashes with the Egyptians, Assyrians and other neighbouring powers, and Troy was one of the cities destroyed in the process.

Wood outlines the 'discovery' of the site of Troy (a hill in Turkey a few miles from the Dardanelles called Hisarlik) by the early archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in the mid-19th Century and the work by Schliemann and others in uncovering the site and other notable contemporary locations, including Mycena. Wood describes the problems associated with these digs, which tended to be rushed and even destructive ("Schliemann has left us with the ruin of a ruin," he laments at one point) before later, more careful archaeologists could work on the sites. Accompanied by illustrations and numerous photographs of the site (some modern, some from Schliemann's time), Wood describes in clear detail the problems presented by the fact that Troy is divided into 'layers', with the city inhabited both before and after the time of the alleged Trojan War, and dating the war to the correct layer is problematic (both the sixth and seventh layers have been proposed as 'Homer's Troy', and both have issues fitting that conclusion).

After this, Wood expands the scope to incorporate the entire Eastern Mediterranean at the time of the 12th-13th centuries BC. This was a time of surprisingly frequent international relations: the Hittite, Egyptian and Assyrian rulers tended to correspond with one another directly (and, less frequently with their more distant Mycenaean neighbours) and trade flourished between their nations (with wars - even large ones - put down as minor and temporary disagreements, soon mended). Amusingly, there are even surviving tablets featuring the Hittite queen exchanging minor court gossip with Ramses II, one of the greatest Egyptian pharaohs. Unfortunately, the record is frustratingly incomplete, and Greek-Hittite discussions over a troublesome matter in the west which resulted in military activity (a clash over the city of Wilusa, and notably the Greek of Homer's time doesn't use the 'W', meaning he would have called it 'Ilusa', which is close to 'Ilium') are particularly fragmented.

Wood describes the situation well, first exploring the archaeological unearthing of Troy and other important sites. He describes the work and research done that uncovered the Hittites, a mighty empire of the ancient world that had fallen so completely that evidence of its existence was only uncovered a century ago, and how they provided a 'missing link' that explained the balance of power of the time. Sites contemporaneous with Troy are explored and shared pottery remnants and tablets written in the same languages are used to trace a network of trade and political relations between cities and nations. Pottery and pictures of the time depicting siege engines as stylised giant wooden horses smashing down city walls provide clues as to the origin of the Trojan Horse legend. But every time a conclusion seems to drift into view, it's frustratingly snatched away by a gap in the records.

Woods' solution to this is to present 'scenarios' which he acknowledges are highly speculative but nevertheless credible. The problem is a lack of specific mentions or references to Troy in the historical record of the time. Wood suggests that the evidence supports a more widespread incursion into Asia Minor by the Greeks, with Troy as a minor sideshow at best, and this is supported by strong evidence that the Greeks had an enclave on the shores of south-western Anatolia around the city of Miletus. However, the evidence that the Greeks launched attacks in north-western Asia Minor is much more limited.

This is the book's greatest weakness: whilst discoveries at Troy, Mycenae and in the old Hittite ruins have resulted in some spectacular revelations over the last century, and expose a fascinating and more complex world than Homer suggests, they also stop short of giving us enough data to draw solid conclusions about the Trojan War. Wood seems to reluctantly agree with this in the final assessment: that having gone in search of the Trojan War, he can only prove that it could have happened, but no more than that. But the uncertainty allows for the myth of the Trojan War to live on, awaiting more archaeological discoveries to illuminate the time.

In Search of the Trojan War (****) is a well-researched book that succinctly (in less than 300 pages) provides an overview of the archaeological history of the region and allows Wood to present the evidence for his broad conclusions about the period. Occasionally he gets drawn a little too far down the path of 'speculative' musings rather than sticking strictly with the evidence, but these musings are well-signposted in advance.

All about Michael...
By A Customer
Michael Wood's account of the "search for the Trojan war" is distinguished by one central feature. He has an astounding gift for saying in 250 words what could be better said in 10. To say that this book is verbose is like saying that Mt. Everest is pretty darn high. This book is the model of hyperventilated verbosity...droning on and on about granular details that are at least unimportant if not downright irrelevant. In the end, it seems that Michael is more interested in hearing himself make noise than in telling the story of Troy. That is very sad, since the story is one worth telling. Moreover, the many interesting photos in the book tantalize the reader with the promise of information which Mr. Wood cannot deliver...or at least carefully hides in one truly huge mound of trivia. This story deserves an author who can tell it. But Michael Wood is not the one. If you are a reader who enjoys flipping through the pictures without really understanding what they mean, then this book may suit you well. But if you seek actual knowledge of the subject, look elsewhere. Look, in particular, for an author who can distinguish the essential from the inconsequential while telling a story that moves straightforwardly from its beginning to its end. Michael Wood is not that author.

A Wonderful Guide to Understanding the Everglades
By P. Gertenbach
As an environmental consultant, I found the first edition of The Everglades Handbook to be very useful, and the second edition even better! There are new chapters and very important new information, such as the new chapters on the Big Cypress Swamp, Lake Okeechobee, and "Synthesis" with its diagrams of succession and food chains, and the updated final chapter with details of human history in South Florida. I especially looked forward to the updated information on the Everglades restoration - it was excellent. The new edition is well worth the price (I heard that CRC Press reduced the price by 10%!). I can't recommend this book more highly for those people wanting to become familiar with how the Everglades works as an ecosystem.

Essential resource
By Paul Martin
Having enjoyed the prior edition of this book, I was delighted to receive the Third Edition which is even better with marvellous photos and graphics. This is essential reading for anybody trying to understand the challenges we face in restoring this unique ecosystem. The text is well writtten and reflects the author's scientific studies as well as his passion for the River of Grass. It is also an excellent source of information about the fauna and flora of the Everglades. it is delightful to browse through prior to a trip to Florida.

"Understanding" is the key word in the title
By North Carolina Birder
This book is wildly expensive new, so I ordered a used copy rated "acceptable" in condition with some highlighting. My copy had obviously been used by a college student -- someone who used little circles to dot her i's. There was yellow highlighting, and the cover was creased. But even with all that prior use and abuse, I was very, very happy to have this book. It contains a world of information about the geology and biology of the Everglades. And the writing is very clear. All the things I hungered to know on a recent kayak trip out of Flamingo I am learning now -- such as why some areas are forested and some not, why there are severely stunted cypress trees in some grassy areas, and what those open areas covered with succulent plants are doing right behind the south-facing beaches as you paddle from Flamingo out toward East Cape. There is an immense compendium of terrific information in this book, and I have barely scratched the surface. "The Everglades Handbook" fulfills the promise of the word "understanding" in its subtitle. I recommend it to anyone with a genuine interest in the Everglades.

Terrible Grammar Errors, Will Not Provide Adequate Preparation
By N. Obert
The 5 star reviews must be written by paid reviewers. One of the reviewers mentioned that s/he loved looking at the beautiful pictures; really? The pictures in the answer choices were mere cartoon drawings, no beauty to behold. Ridiculous.

The Cogat test is designed to be read aloud to students. Reading the questions aloud was almost impossible as I struggled to correct the grammar without changing the meaning of the sentence. I do not believe the question writers are native English speakers, as many of the errors involve subject-verb agreement (or disagreement as the case may be). Many of the questions were so poorly written that the misplaced prepositional phrases changed the meaning of the question and led the child to the incorrect answer. Additionally, the foils (wrong answer choices) were so poorly chosen that a child, gifted or not, could easily choose the right answer without even reading the question.

It was helpful to have an idea of what sorts of questions might be asked, but because the grammar was so awful and the foils so obvious, it is impossible for me to know whether the level of this practice test is anywhere near the level of the actual Cogat. I sincerely hope that the editors of the official exam are more competent and discerning than the editors of this practice test.

Very poorly designed book. Set of questions have incorrect options: correct answer is no present in 5 options. Level of question is not clearly defined and adhoc.

good prep

found it a productive prep material but obviously once used once, not really functional after that so use judiciously. also make sure you know what actual cogat form your child is taking as the differences between forms can be significant.

Pathologies of Power: Health, Human Rights, and the New War on the Poor (California Series in Public Anthropology), by Paul Farmer

Pathologies of Power uses harrowing stories of life—and death—in extreme situations to interrogate our understanding of human rights. Paul Farmer, a physician and anthropologist with twenty years of experience working in Haiti, Peru, and Russia, argues that promoting the social and economic rights of the world’s poor is the most important human rights struggle of our times. With passionate eyewitness accounts from the prisons of Russia and the beleaguered villages of Haiti and Chiapas, this book links the lived experiences of individual victims to a broader analysis of structural violence. Farmer challenges conventional thinking within human rights circles and exposes the relationships between political and economic injustice, on one hand, and the suffering and illness of the powerless, on the other.

Farmer shows that the same social forces that give rise to epidemic diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis also sculpt risk for human rights violations. He illustrates the ways that racism and gender inequality in the United States are embodied as disease and death. Yet this book is far from a hopeless inventory of abuse. Farmer’s disturbing examples are linked to a guarded optimism that new medical and social technologies will develop in tandem with a more informed sense of social justice. Otherwise, he concludes, we will be guilty of managing social inequality rather than addressing structural violence. Farmer’s urgent plea to think about human rights in the context of global public health and to consider critical issues of quality and access for the world’s poor should be of fundamental concern to a world characterized by the bizarre proximity of surfeit and suffering.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
There are many kinds of gifted physicians: clinicians, researchers, and those who build institutions. Paul Farmer is the rarest of all: a prophet. Pathologies of Power is a jeremiad on how the "structural violence" of denied opportunities, economic deprivation, violent despots (and the powers supporting them), and international financial organizations harm the health of billions of people who are so distant that they are glibly and uncomprehendingly referred to as living in a "third world." This summary does not do justice to the richness of the book. Farmer deftly weaves personal stories from his work with the dispossessed, careful academic notes, and well-chosen quotations from intellectuals, poets, and proponents of liberation theology. These citations introduce marvelous writers who are not well known to readers from the United States. Farmer builds from the 19th century's Rudolph Virchow, who argued that physicians must advance public health through political and social reform as "attorneys for the poor." Farmer's anecdotes about mobilizing the poor on their own behalf echo the work of Norman Bethune. And Farmer extends Jonathan Mann's fusion of human rights and medical ethics to health and human rights. Farmer, a physician and an anthropologist, offers a blistering critique of anthropologists who describe colorful folkways or bits of social problems, such as sexual barter, without illuminating how such practices are sustained by class and political history. This critique and Farmer's advocacy for oppressed persons mark this book as a prophetic work. Therefore, it is also a towering work of medical ethics. Farmer's critique of anthropology applies equally well to medical ethics, with its scholastic focus on moral curiosities and its decorous silence on "political" issues such as the lack of insurance or the ways in which the policies of international financial organizations affect health and health care for the world's poor. The prophetic voice speaks for the marginalized and can strike listeners as shrill, odd, or discomforting. Farmer skirts that risk by careful scholarship and compelling writing. That being said, I think he overrates the competence of Haiti's reelected president Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the success of Cuba's program to suppress the human immunodeficiency virus. Though he correctly notes the entrenched and mistaken pessimism of the international health authorities about the ability of dispossessed people to complete tuberculosis treatment, he overestimates the capacity of the available infrastructure in many poor countries to manage daily antiretroviral therapy. Such quibbles do not diminish the importance of his larger thesis. Farmer calls on physicians to mount a sustained engagement against human-rights abuses as the roots of disease, disability, and lack of access to health care. Health itself, rather than technical compliance with laws or accords, must be the standard for evaluating governments, foreign policy, and the national restructuring plans of such organizations as the International Monetary Fund. Expanding health services and democratizing information must be central to the global agenda of all physicians. Academic research and education must use the privilege conferred by their power and independence to articulate specific relationships between human rights and abuses of human rights with health and disease. We live in a time when epidemics keep pace with globalization and when the map of deprivation and human-rights abuses precisely overlays the atlas of war, disease, and terrorism. Farmer's sane prescription is more likely to work than is rationalizing neglect, dribbling charity, averting our eyes, or attempting to build a garrison state bounded by a cordon sanitaire. Pathologies of Power is a profound work; it deserves the widest possible audience. Steven Miles, M.D.

Review
"This detailed analysis of public health draws on perspectives from anthropology, history, liberation theology, sociology, law, and medicine. From this broad platform, Farmer takes us back through the causative underpinnings of disease-ridden lives and paints a unifying picture of ruling power structures aligned against impoverished constituents. His conclusions are well articulated, thoughtful, and damning. . . . Through his engaging and passionate style, Farmer gives voice to the unheard poor around the world and challenges medical professionals to broaden the vision of medicine to include human rights. In reinvigorating the role of human rights in the health and well being of the poor, Farmer's book is a valuable addition to the growing literature on health and human rights."--"The Lancet

From the Inside Flap
"This is an angry and a hopeful book, and, like everything Dr. Farmer has written, it has both passion and authority. Pathologies of Power is an eloquent plea for a working definition of human rights that would not neglect the most basic rights of all: food, shelter and health. This plea has special potency because it comes from Dr. Farmer, a person who has proven that the dream of universal and comprehensive human rights is possible, and who has brought food, shelter, health, and hope to some of the poorest people on this earth."—Tracy Kidder, author of The Soul of a New Machine and Home Town

"Farmer's brilliance and charisma leap from the pages of his book. He challenges us to face the urgent theoretical and political challenges of the twenty-first century by linking structural violence to embodied social suffering and in the process calls for a new definition of human rights. Once this book is out, we will no longer be able to remain complacently--or rather, complicitly--on the sidelines."—Philippe Bourgois, author of In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio

"A passionate critique of conventional biomedical ethics by one of the world's leading physician-anthropologists and public intellectuals. Farmer's on-the-ground analysis of the relentless march of the AIDS epidemic and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis among the imprisoned and the sick-poor of the world illuminates the pathologies of a world economy that has lost its soul."—Nancy Scheper-Hughes, author of Death without Weeping: the Violence of Everyday Life in Brazil

"In his compelling book, Farmer captures the central dilemma of our times—the increasing disparities of health and well-being within and among societies. While all member countries of the United Nations denounce the gross violations of human rights perpetrated by those who torture, murder, or imprison without due process, the insidious violations of human rights due to structural violence involving the denial of economic opportunity, decent housing, or access to health care and education are commonly ignored. Pathologies of Power makes a powerful case that our very humanity is threatened by our collective failure to end these abuses."—Robert S. Lawrence, President of Physicians for Human Rights and Edyth Schoenrich Professor of Preventive Medicine at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University

"Farmer has given us that most rare of books: one that opens both our minds and hearts. It stands as a model of engaged scholarship and an urgent call for social scientists to forsake their cushy disregard for human rights at home and abroad."—Loïc Wacquant, author of Prisons of Poverty

"Paul Farmer is an original: a powerful writer, an insightful theorist, and a human rights activist on behalf of the health needs of some of the poorest and most excluded people on the planet. Pathologies of Power brings together all his strengths, as a thinker and an activist. Every health worker, human rights teacher, and government official who seeks to improve the health status and life chances of their fellow human beings simply must read this book."—Michael Ignatieff, author of Human Rights as Politics and Idolatry

"Paul Farmer is a great doctor with massive experience working against the hardest of diseases in the most adverse circumstances, and at the same time he is a proficient and insightful anthropologist. Farmer’s knowledge of maladies such as AIDS and drug-resistant tuberculosis, which he fights on behalf of his indigent patients, is hard to match. But what is particularly relevant in appreciating the contribution of this powerful book is that Farmer is a visionary analyst who looks beyond the details of fragmentary explanations to seek an integrated understanding of a complex reality."—Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate, Economics

Take Two Aspirin and Read This Book
By Patti M. Marxsen
Paul Farmer's "Pathologies of Power" will probably give you a headache, undoubtedly cause sleep disturbance, and very likely turn your stomach. In short, it will make you sick. But if you are well enough to read this and rich enough to consider purchasing the book, you are better off than the "disposable millions" whose lives he illuminates and honors in this indictment of global public health as-we-know-it. In this passionate and well-researched treatise, a world-class physician takes his own disciplines of medicine and anthropology to task for failing to ask the right questions. Then, noting that the U.S. pharmaceutical industry is the most profitable industry in the most affluent country in the world, he blows through its defense of those extraordinary profits like a gust of fresh air. A similarly searing deconstruction of health policymakers' rationale for "cost-effectiveness" and their elite argot of oppression reveals a blame-the-victim mentality that plagues the world and explains why, in the midst of unprecedented wealth, over 40 million Americans are without health insurance of any kind. And that is just the beginning.

While Farmer's hospital in Haiti, Zanmi Lasante, is not the only hospital to successfully combat the forces of poverty and disease in that country (Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in the Artibonite Valley predates Farmer's project by nearly three decades), his twenty-year presence in Central Haiti has resulted in a deep understanding of how structural violence on a global scale is a leading cause of disease and death among the world's poor, wherever they may live. Drawing on case-study examples from Haiti, South America, Cuba, Siberia, and the United States, he deftly illustrates why tuberculosis deaths, which he describes as 95 percent curable with inexpensive medication developed many years ago, "occur almost exclusively among the poor, whether they reside in the inner cities of the United Stated or in the poor counties of the Southern Hemisphere." Addressing the growing trend of multi-drug resistant strains of TB, Farmer discusses "tuberculosis as punishment" in the world's prison populations and delivers a wake-up call to those who might consider themselves immune from this, and other, infectious diseases.

In his critique of the commodification of healthcare, Farmer speaks of "orphan drugs" drugs that are simply not developed because they are needed by people who cannot pay for them, the sale of organs by those without resources to those with money, and the equally revolting multi-million dollar compensation packages of pharmaceutical company CEOs and managed care executives. In the midst of this catalog of inequity, he wonders why medical ethics courses in American schools of medicine focus so narrowly on the "quandaries of the fortunate" like whether or not to refuse a particular technology or whether or not to leave a loved one in a prolonged coma when millions are condemned to death or disease before they learn to walk. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) does not escape his critical analysis: "... the language of social injustice is increasingly absent from public health parlance," he notes.

Farmer is one of those remarkable doctors working in remote places who, somehow, finds the energy to look up from his daily workload and ponder the underlying causes of the suffering he treats. Furthermore, he writes about it in the brisk and engaging prose of an investigative reporter and brings provocative interdisciplinary voices of others---Gustavo Gutiérrez, Paolo Freire, Cornel West, Amartya Sen, Jon Sobrino, Nancy Scheper-Hughes, to name a few---to bear on his march toward social justice. His ideas are radical, in part, because they are simple and based on an equitable distribution of health, regardless of wealth. Bringing the observe, judge, act methodology of liberation theology to bear on global public health, Farmer advocates a "preferential option" for the poor, a redefinition of medicine as a healing profession (as opposed to medicine-as-commerce), and a new understanding of healthcare as a basic human right, for all.

Toward the end of a chapter entitled "Listening for Prophetic Voices," Farmer distills his argument into a call to action: "We thus find ourselves at a crossroads: healthcare can be considered a commodity to be sold, or it can be considered a basic social right. It cannot comfortably be considered both of these at the same time. This, I believe, is the great drama of medicine at the start of this century. And this is the choice before all people of faith and good will in theses dangerous times."

Pathologies of Power is a lucid and alarming statement from a fearless physician. It speaks truth to power and it speaks for the destitute sick. Take two aspirin, lie down, and read the book. In spite of its consciousness-raising side effects, this may be the beginning of a cure for what ails the world.
