Intriguing debates from the early 20th century

When I first bought this book, I wasn't sure if it was a collection of articles that simply addressed contradictory point of views on the subjects listed on the cover, or actual transcriptions of debates that occured in the past. I was very pleased to learn that it was indeed transcriptions of live debates that occured in the early part of the 20th century. There are three debates in all:
Has Life Any Meaning? - Between Frank Harris and Percy Ward, Sunday, April 11, 1920, Kimball Hall, Chicago
Debate on Spiritualism - Between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Joseph McCabe, November, 1919, London, England
Is Evolution True? - Between George McCready Price and Joseph McCabe, Queen's Hall, Langham Place, London, September
Though the publishers at a casual glance (of their published books) seem biased towards a particular atheistic/materialistic point of view, they none the less reproduced a fair example of high class debates between learned men of both pro and anti-views on these subjects.
One particularly interesting aspect of this book was exactly what was used as evidence for both anti and pro views at that time. As an example, pro-evolutionist Joseph McCabe said the following:
"Now I come to man. There is a general opinion that a vast gulf separates man from the ape. It did one hundred yeas ago. It certainly does not today... Now we have men of the Stone Age carrying us nearer to the ape; the Piltdown man, and one or two others, going as far again in the direction of the ape"
Of course, as most people are aware, and as the publishers themselves noted, Piltdown man was a fraud and was uncovered as such in 1953. But being "undeniable" at the time, it was still a piece of evidence for Evolution.
Being a collector of books on the subjects of the origin and divisification of life and the existence of the supernatural, I was very pleased with this book and the disputants themselves. While the evidences used are outdated, it has quite a bit of historical value, whether one is interested in the discussions or the men debating. I personally highly recommend it, and believe it would make a good addition to any personal book collection.

Confusing equations, but useful tables.

I had to buy this book for my Intermediate Structures class, and while I've learned a decent amount, the format of this book has not been helpful. The tables are wonderful, but equations in the book are written without units, so unless you know exactly where the author is pulling his numbers from, you will get lost and end up screwing up your own calculations.

Its decent for reference for the tables, but there are better-written books for learning structures.

This is not a simplified treatment of the subject. I have a graduate degree in engineering and needed by background in Structures to understand it. I would not recommend it to builders without an engineering or architectural background.

A great and underused resource.

This is a great product. It contains all the information you need for designing. The information inside is priceless.

It does lack the basic physics information which you have to find somewhere. Which usually means you'll have to buy a book on that which will have some of the same information but this is more informative than the similar information other books will provide.

By basic physics, I mean the load diagrams, momentum, and sheer. It has real basic cheat sheets but going into depth on the matter it doesn't.

Just what I was looking for!

People who order this product do need to understand that it is a definitive and very thorough book on Young Living Essential Oils only. This is exactly what I intended to order, and am very pleased with the packaging, speed of shipping (very fast), the condition of the book (shrink wrapped and mint condition), and the quality of the product itself. The book is hard cover and spiral bound so that it lays flat and is convenient to use because of that. The pages are high quality glossy paper, with many full color prints and informative diagrams. There are also many convenient quick reference charts which cut to the chase if I am in a hurry. The whole book is color coded for convenient use as the colors show on the page edges when the book is closed. This Essential Oils Desk Reference 6th Edition far surpasses my own expectations, even though I had had the book described to me many times. It is very thorough and extremely well written and well documented. In the back of the book, there are several appendices-so helpful, a bibliography, and an exhaustive index. I had been confused by the difference in reviews, as to whether this was the desk reference or the pocket reference. This is a full size desk reference: a bit larger than 9 x 11 inches, and has 810 pages. I am very pleased.

FYI ~ It seems a few who have left comments here are mistaking this as the pocket reference edition . This is in fact the DESKTOP Edition and is much larger. and goes into much more depth . I thought this might take away any confusion arising from such comments.

A great book

This is a great book. I used it when I was in residency. I am now a practicing psychiatrist. I can still, even to this day, see how this book has shaped my clinical interviewing in a positive way. It is practical, it takes the theory and gives you examples of how to phrase things. It has mneumonics that help you remember all of the different parts of the interview. it enables you to do a pretty complete diagnositic interview when you need to. I remember getting compliments from my supervisors after they observed my interview when I started using these methods. It is a great book to get when you are wondering about how to get started when you first begin conducting interviews.

as a seasoned clinician I would recommend this book to any psychologist, social worker or therapist. When one works in a fast pace like a psych emergency room this book does comes handy.

Useful and Well-written

This book is required reading for me in a psychiatric nurse practitioner program. This book has great ideas for learning diagnostic criteria and for eliciting information from our patients. It is also well-written and pleasant to read.
