Strategy Deployment Over Simplified?

This is the 3rd hoshin kanri (strategy deployment) text I've read (on top of other readings). It's also the 2nd book by this author I've now read too. Having loved his "Lean Production Simplified" book, so much, I was somewhat disappointed by this book.

Pro:
+ Simple and easy to read
+ I liked his use of A3s, a topic that I have relatively little experience
+ There are interesting Socratic Method-style chapter summaries, phrased in the form of questions... nice touch
+ Good linkage to PDCA
+ Shingo Prize Winner (2008)

Con:
- No index at the back of the book (please add in next edition)
- A narrative, a style that while easy to read tends to be less informationally dense (contrast to Jackson's, "Hoshin Kanri for the Lean Enterprise").
- Limits topics to planning of goal execution like Bechtel did in "Management Compass"
- "True North" examples could be greatly improved in my view... all compasses point to magnetic North. If compass is an analogy for intuition then hoshin kanri methods help us find our way in spite of this strong, traditional/common pull to a similar, but ultimately divergent path.
- For me, offered too little on how the system might work

Bottom line: Strengths of this book may also be its weaknesses. Might be good as an introduction to hoshin kanri, but seems overly simplified to me and not to my taste. Perhaps expectations were set unrealistically high on my part given his brilliant text, "Lean Production Simplified." Hoshin is a tough topic to write about, and it still suprises me how deep this topic really is.

Good Information

This book is full of good ideas on how to implement and develop a business strategy (or for that matter, any group project's strategy). It has many graphics that help push that idea. It presents the majority of the information as a story of a struggling company who hires a new manager that becomes the hero by changing the management climate (by refocusing priorities). The downside to it is that there is a lot of 'fluff' in the story and the story is idealized (all the workers seem too patient and open minded, the 'hero' that brings all these ideas to the business is 'too good' at his job, etc). The story, although it does provide a good example of how to use all the information in the book, really just acts as filler between the real nuggets of gold. The information is very good, the story is a little too much.

Getting the Right Things Done

This book increased my knowledge of Six Sigma and A3 processes. I have attended a Six Sigma certification course as well as reading Lean Six Sigma That Works. Getting the Right Things Done uses a fictional company that was once very successful but now struggling. The book goes through the transformation of the company into lean techniques and processes which starts with the buy in from the management team. The fictional company is based on manufacturing air conditioner parts but the examples are easily transferable to other industries and services. The book is an easy read with lots of good charts and drawings to help transfer the points. This book demonstrates A3 processes which improve project management processes.

Eventually the girl decides to keep her own name as one of her classmates takes pride in the new Korean nickname he has chosen, Chinku, meaning "friend." The round, red imprint of the Korean character for Unhei's name provides the graphic manifestation of the story's theme. Attractive golden endpapers feature random repetitions of the stamp imprint interspersed with her classmates' handwritten suggestions on scraps of torn paper. The bold, bright paintings that illustrate the story are realistic, warm, and appealing. Unfortunately, the text sags under the weight of its mission to describe how it might feel to immigrate. A well-meaning and visually attractive effort, but uninspired.

Ages 4-8. Unhei has just come with her family from Korea and is starting school. Her name is pronounced Yoon-hye, which means grace, but she feels awkward about it after some teasing on the school bus. She decides to choose an American name, and her classmates oblige her by filling a glass jar with their suggestions. Her mother reminds her that she and her grandmother went to a name master for Unhei's name, and Unhei practices stamping her name with the beautiful name stamp her grandmother gave her. Finally, Unhei decides to keep her own name, and one of her classmates even has a stamp made for himself with the Korean characters for friend. The paintings are mostly in gold and earth tones, and the figures have both stature and simplicity--as does the story. GraceAnne DeCandido

The new kid in school needs a new name! Or does she?
Being the new kid in school is hard enough, but what about when nobody can pronounce your name? Having just moved from Korea, Unhei is anxious that American kids will like her. So instead of introducing herself on the first day of school, she tells the class that she will choose a name by the following week. Her new classmates are fascinated by this no-name girl and decide to help out by filling a glass jar with names for her to pick from. But while Unhei practices being a Suzy, Laura, or Amanda, one of her classmates comes to her neighborhood and discovers her real name and its special meaning. On the day of her name choosing, the name jar has mysteriously disappeared. Encouraged by her new friends, Unhei chooses her own Korean name and helps everyone pronounce it--"Yoon-Hey.

Wonderful!

I love this book because it reinforces the idea that people have a right to their given names and that they have a right to expect people to learn how to pronounce them. I work with many Chinese, Korean and Japanese students and it is common for these kids to feel the obligation to change their name, allow teachers and students mispronounce them if they do use their given names, and their parents often tell them to get used to it rather than teaching them to assert themselves and expect people to learn how to pronounce them. If the child feels that they have a right to their name, the keep it, teach people how to pronounce it and feel better about themselves. If they change it, the given name still pops up on paperwork, people still mispronounce it and they are always trying to hide it away before it pops up again. Accepting your name and teaching people how to pronounce it, provides people with empowerment and a sense of some control over their lives. It helps a lot in the acculturaltion process.

Good book for the classroom and home.

Very good book. Name jar is about accepting one's culture background. Once Unhei accepted who she was, she was able to teach the class and the teacher about her Korean background. The books shows things from the viewpoint of a young girl who is a new American. I think this is not only a good book for kids at home to read, but a good book to assign for school children to read.

Missippian Culture for the General Reader

The author has both excavated and written profusely on the Missippian Culture, centered in Cahokia to the East of Saint Louis, and the builders of the largest pyramids in North America. The culture flourished in the later Medieval times, just before the white men came to North America. Cahokia should be a famous as Chichen Itza and Tikal--this book is a superb introduction to the culture and to the scholarly discputes about its origins and acheivements.

Every well educated American should be familiar with Missippian culture. Read this book!

A history of the Mississippian people.

A very readable and comprehensive history of the endemic peoples of the Mississippi valley. Although Cahokia was the largest site structurally, pains are taken to present cultural development throughout the larger environment in the valley. From the early, less planned and less financed archaeology, through a broad look at these peoples, the text is fact-filled and efficient. This short, but well referenced and indexed book gives a thorough look at the Mississippi valley, from the initial building stages, to the tie in with the far-reaching 2,100 BC dry periods which helped bring about the downfall of Cahokia and endemic groups throughout the central and western areas of America. A must read.

Provacative and engaging account of Cahokia

Pauketat is a bit of a bomb thrower and he lobsquite a few well directed missiles in this work, but they all land to good effect and he gives a very good account of the fluorescence of the Mississippian culture at Cahokia. His argument holds together very well and his genuine passion for the subject keeps it quite engaging. My only real complaint is that the book basically ends with Cahokia, and does not really discuss the Mississippian in the Southeast at all, nor does it have much to say on Cahokia's precursors. I would love to see a volume on either subject that was as passionately, thoroughly, and engagingly written.

In a way this is almost a mirror of Kantner's work on the Anasazi, which is part of the same series, suffers from almost the reverse flaw Ancient Puebloan Southwest (Case Studies in Early Societies), barely discussing the Chacoan period, but illuminates what happened after the end of Chaco.

Highly recommended for those interested in the largest center in the Precolumbian US.

GREAT BOOK

I really enjoyed this book, especially because it has a Cd in the back cover with all the pdf files of pictures and dwg files of CAD drawings for the floor plans of each project.

The only downside is that there is only 2 pictures per project, but on the other hand it does have all the main architects of the Twentieth Century.

Fantastic resource for students

This is a tremendous compendium of guess what--key houses. What's initially impressive are the author's editorial choices. The important, canonical, expected houses are here, (Farnsworth, Villa Savoye, Fallingwater, Aalto, Kahn, Gropius, Eames are represented), but there are many pleasant and welcome surprises, like the Wittgenstein house and the rotating Villa Girasole. Important choices you'd expect to be left out, like the Melnikov house or the Shodhan house, are included, so, along with the CD, which may have some flaws or limitations, nonetheless gives architecture students an amazing archive of case study material at their fingertips. Highly recommended.

Important examples missing | British bias | selections from the end of the 20th century less convincing, over represented.

Interesting but disappointing. Naturally, a book like this is bound to attract controversy and invite others to challenge the choices made. The author describes the book as derived from the artistic canon of 20th century houses, meaning the houses that are the most famous, well known and influential... so it's a worth controversy. Maybe the most valuable aspect of the book is that it shapes a discussion of what should be included in the canon of 20th century architecture. That said, I thought there were too many biases shaping the list that the author should have challenged in his own mind as he developed this book. Hence three stars instead of four.

The biases that seem to be at work here: 1. A British bias...a good number of British houses included would not be selected by an author who was not British or did not have a long list of books on British architecture to his credit. 2. A late 20th century bias...the houses from the end of the century are naturally less convincing and will be very different for any architectural historian writing the same book 100 years from now. 3. A modern architecture bias...as is often said, history is written by the winners and the polemicists of modern architecture enforced a ban on the serious consideration of the non-modern despite the fact that architecture other than modern was what prominent architects were building during the first half of the 20th century. The only exception to this tyranny, in this book, is a house by Lutyens (every modern architects favorite historicist.)

The two obvious omissions from the book that occur to me are the Palais Stoclet, Brussels by Josef Hoffman and the Walter L. Dodge House, Los Angeles by Irving Gill. To me these seem like glaring omissions, but other readers will, no doubt, have their own to offer.
