Not for the Authoritarian

Heifetz presents a post-modern view of leadership responsible to the multiple voices and viewpoints that must be considered in today's context. Leading while respecting personal autonomy might appear impossible upon first glance. However, through case study analyses using history to guide as a lens, Heifetz appropriately condensed multiple concepts of effective yet balanced leadership. Taking into consideration one's own place in society or scope of influence as a leader proves to be a central premise guiding decision-making and action. Published in 1998, one can easily see the concept of "leading from behind" not merely foreshadowed but illustrated in the text. A gift from Heifetz that becomes more relevant as time goes on.

This book provides meaningful clarity on the myriad aspects of leadership. Leading is the process of navigation through complex nuances that often lead to further conflict; and as Heifetz points out "disequilibrium." However, navigating through these may bring community vestment needed for reasonable solutions. The best advice is :"looking from the balcony " and using assessment to chart the way.

Significantly revised based on student and instructor feedback, the new Fourth Edition of Implementing Change continues to examine the ways in which change processes are experienced by those "on the ground" while adding new features, new material and the most current research. Based primarily on the Concerns Based Adoption Model (CBAM), this user-friendly text focuses on introducing constructs that can be used by those engaged in facilitating change processes as well as those who are evaluating and studying change.

 

As before, the major construct that is the topic of each chapter is evidence-based. For this edition, up-to-date citations from research have been inserted with each construct, tool, and application. The findings from important recent research studies are reported, such as the first studies linking Change Facilitator Style of school principals with student test scores.

 

About the Author
About the Authors

Gene E. Hall, Ph.D. , School of Environmental and Public Affairs, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has been a full professor at four universities and served as the Dean of the College of Education at two universities. Dr. Hall is internationally recognized for his career-long focus on developing new understandings about the change process in organization settings. He regularly serves as a consultant for schools, school districts, businesses, and state leaders on the implementation of various innovations and change processes from a Concerns-Based perspective. In addition to his work in the United States, he regularly collaborates with colleagues in other countries and serves on doctoral committees in relation to facilitating, evaluating, and studying change processes. His more recent research has examined relationships between Change Facilitator Style of leaders and outcomes such as increases in student learning. Dr. Hall has had a parallel academic career in regard to innovation in and national accreditation of teacher education. He is a co-author of The Foundations of American Education (Pearson) now in its 16th edition, and the lead author of Introduction to Teaching: Making a Difference in Student Learning (SAGE).

 

Shirley M. Hord, Ph.D. was the first Scholar Emerita at the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, and is currently Scholar Laureate, in association with Learning Forward (previously, National Staff Development Council). She authors articles and books on school-based professional development, school change and improvement, and professional learning communities. A sampling of her publications are Implementing Change: Patterns, Principles, and Potholes with Gene Hall; Learning Together, Leading Together: Changing Schools Through Professional Learning Communities, Teachers College Press (2004); with Patricia Roy, Moving NSDC’s Staff Development Standards Into Practice: Innovation Configurations, National Staff Development Council (2003); Leading Professional Learning Communities:Voices from Research and Practice, Corwin Press (2008); and with Edward Tobia, Reclaiming Our Teaching Profession: The Power of Learning in Community, Teachers College Press (2012). In addition to working with educators at all levels across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Dr. Hord serves as an educational consultant worldwide, in Asia, Europe, Australia, and Africa.

Implementing Change: Patterns, Principles, and Potholes (2001) is the latest book on the process of educational change and leadership co-authored by Gene E. Hall and Shirley M. Hord. It describes the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM), a framework they have been developing for use in organizational and educational settings for the past thirty years. Within it they describe how people can and do facilitate change. Leadership today requires the ability to organize and direct human resources for levels of constant change, most recently in educational settings. This book provides educational leaders and change agents with practical tools and advice on how to effectively accomplish their goals. Among them are: innovation configuration mapping techniques, stages of concern surveys and evaluative tools, and levels of use matrices, as well as information on leadership styles and how they affect change.
The format of this book is not only engaging, but entertaining. Chapters begin with quotes in first person narrative, from real/fictitious accounts of people involved in change. The figures and graphics, often using analogies and metaphors for text ideas, add to the clarity and the readability of the book. Case studies and examples are interspersed with humor and credible settings and characters. Focus questions within chapters and discussion questions at the end of the chapter invite further thinking and discussion which makes it an ideal resource for study/focus groups who are dealing with change. Chapter endings also include suggestions for fieldwork activities that provide opportunities for active engagement with the issues being discussed.
While they caution readers not to use this as a recipe book (p. 103) it is difficult to overlook the accommodating and sequential format they use, filled with useful advice and suggestions. Hall and Hord offer practical tools and a unique combination of theory, research and practice for coping with change in organizational structures. With good humor and practical advice this is one of the most readable and useful books ever to help managers and change facilitators navigate through the difficult process of organizational changes.

Carolyn Graham is the creator of Jazz Chants, which connect the rhythm of spoken American English to the beatof jazz. She developed the technique of jazz chanting during her twenty-five years of teaching ESL in the American Language Institute of New York University. Exellent teaching pronunciation book for ESL/EFL learners

I am a Korean MATESOL student studing in the US. I have heard that Grahamn's Jazz chant is very good ESL source,and I have used her chants in my classes in Korea. The Jazz chant is very helpful in teaching rhythm and flow that English cotains. However the Jazz chants I have used before was just chants. They didn't have any guide lines. However,what drove me to attempt to write review of this book is that while I was looking for a book for pronunciation micro teaching, I happened to find this book in the library(Actually I didn't know this book was what my professor recommanded in class until I went over my notebook couple of minutes ago!) This book is very well organized and presents clear lesson points. It is definately wonderful to teach oral skills to English learners with fun. Not only does this book present chants but also has written exercises. I strongly recommand this book to ESL/EFL teachers.

Absolutely Vital to a Good ESL Program

From the first moment I heard these everyday conversations put to classic jazz music, I knew that I would be using Jazz Chants as long as I was involved in ESL. As the author of American Accent Training, I use Jazz Chants in conjunction with Dr. Seuss for a well-rounded accent program. The songs are catchy, and students find that the rhythms and patterns become ingrained in their memories far more effectively than with text study. They are constantly amazed that "Americans really talk this way!" and "I can actually hear the speech music!" Mere words cannot convey what a wonderful series of exercises this is. Carolyn Graham is a musical genius.

More basic than "Jazz Chants"

"Small Talk" has less vocabulary than other Jazz Chants books, and thus is good for true beginners. Chants are wonderfully empowering for students; they make students feel fluent right away, as well as starting them down the road of acquiring the rhythmn and intonation so particular to American English. Great concept!

If Stern had limited herself to the cultural deconstruction at which she is adept, she might have written a work of cultural criticism But instead she links more than 50 often stunning and always intriguing pieces in a m?lange of genres, including fiction, memoir, history and criticism. Examining smoking from so many vantages, Stern touches on a number of themes. She offers glimpses of the tobacco trade in the former Rhodesia, where among tobacco farmers smoking was obligatory, almost patriotic, and she describes the tobacco sales rooms in Harare, Zimbabwe, where billions of dollars' worth of tobacco are sold annually. Stern's engrossing panegyric to nicotine is a complicated web of memoir and cultural criticism in 54 pieces (plus notes and glossary) that touches on nearly every aspect of the addiction--including the pleasure. The vignettes cover an extremely wide range of experiences and interests and span six continents (no smoking on Antarctica), though most are set in Africa, where the author was raised, and Australia, where she lives and works. But no matter the place or whether the encounter (or lack of) is physical or intellectual, smoking is the fulcrum around which revolve her desires. Often, a cigarette, the thought of a cigarette, the smell of her own or someone else's burning cigarette, or even the image on a pack of cigarettes sends her (and the reader) down sometimes funny, sometimes painful, sometimes poignant Proustian tangents of recollection or thoughtful examination. Stern's writing is witty and peppered with interesting references, and the best pieces are her recollections of her youth and family in what was then Rhodesia, where she grew up on a tobacco farm and where the pleasures of addiction and cultural inquiry took root. Lesley Stern has written a smart, witty literary book about a million things important to us, using hybrid forms: short story, essay, meditation--all of which spin like smoke from the cultural conceit of the cigarette. This is a book about Africa, tobacco, orality, movies, sex, culture, desire and loss. The globe-trotting narrator takes us through the streets of Manhattan, o'er the freeways of LA, into hotel rooms in Tokyo, dinner parties in Scotland, as well as the tobacco farms and factories in Zimbabwe. Great fun--a winner.

Even the best are human also

It was the worst period of my life both financially and personally. Unemployed, and struggling. I thought about quitting. I reached for a book on my bookshelf and put it back when I noticed Donald's book. The tittle stood out to me. I am glad I did, because, I read it and I got fired up, and started focusing on solutions and not the problems. A must read for anyone who is struggling and needs help!

This is illustrated by Jed Henry, so there is a completely different style of drawing. The faces of the characters don't look right and there are many inaccuracies in the physical features of the characters and in the scenes depicted. I enjoy different artistic styles, but when the artist changes features, that bothers me. (Just look at Momo on the cover). The illustrations are not just redrawn screenshots from the show, so that is unique. The book covers all three books of the series, but there is not much variation. The images go in order, but it definitely doesn't tell the Avatar story. Many important scenes are not depicted (would've been fun to color a lion turtle or something), and shots of the same scene are shown... at least that is how it feels to me. It just feels... repetitive.

To be honest, the Appa in here is uglier than Shyamalan's Appa.
