This book provides a framework for thinking about economic institutions such as firms. The basic idea is that institutions arise in situations where people write incomplete contracts and where the allocation of power or control is therefore important. Power and control are not standard concepts in economic theory. The book begins by pointing out that traditional approaches cannot explain on the one hand why all transactions do not take place in one huge firm and on the other hand why firms matter at all. An incomplete contracting or property rights approach is then developed. It is argued that this approach can throw light on the boundaries of firms and on the meaning of asset ownership. In the remainder of the book, incomplete contracting ideas are applied to understand firms' financial decisions, in particular, the nature of debt and equity (why equity has votes and creditors have foreclosure rights); the capital structure decisions of public companies; bankruptcy procedure; and the allocation of voting rights across a company's shares. The book is written in a fairly non-technical style and includes many examples. It is aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students, academic and business economists, and lawyers, as well as those with an interest in corporate finance, privatization and regulation, and the transition from socialism to capitalism. Little background knowledge is required, since the concepts are developed as the book progresses and the existing literature is fully reviewed.

One of the best economics books I've ever read

One of the best economics books I've ever read, a beautiful combination of wisdom and clarity. On the first page, Hart starts off with a real-life example of an incomplete contract--a home repair or remodeling contract, if memory serves. Then he shows you how prudent (shrewd?) people will tend to set up firms and financial contracts when the world is like that, when the only contracts you can write are incomplete ones, where you want to create incentives today for your partner to behave well in the complicated, unpredictable future.

Hart's book shows the payoff to pure economic theory. He makes his points with algebra and good clear microeconomic thinking. Strongly recommended for advanced undergraduates and anyone who has wondered why the economy is organized the way it is.

Brilliant piece

I was not interested in any micro theory prior to reading this book. I felt many modern advances in micro theory is purely mathematicians' game, which has little relevance towards reality. That view changed first when I had the pleasure to learn contract theory from Hart. His immensely interesting lecture lured me into actually reading his book, from which his lecture draws and is as fascinating and lucid as his lecture. His explanation is very clear, and refers back to his canonical model of GM to illustrate how theory is relevant to reality. He demonstrates how contract theory answers some questions that neoclassical theory or any established theory could not answer. Another strength of this book and of Hart is that he is able to answer intriguing and important questions using simple mathematics--All the models presented are striped-down, with no unnecessary complications, and the core insight and intuition is not buried in messy complications. To conclude, this is a wonderful book if your are looking for some insights into the organizations of firms.

In this sequel to No Safety in Numbers (Dial, 2012), a fragile system is taking shape as Senator Dorothy Ross, one of the detainees, strictly rations food, assigns work schedules, and tries to keep a handle on the restless teenage population. As in the first book, the plot unfolds in alternating third-person perspectives. The senator's daughter, Lexi, is skeptical of her mother's ability to control the quarantined people to keep the virus at bay. While breaking the mandatory curfew, she has a chance encounter with Marco, who is newly allied with Ryan and his football-team buddies because of his stolen universal key card. Both boys adore Shay, who feels responsible for her grandmother's death and is trying her best to protect her younger sister. Survival is only part of what's at stake for these teens; all of them are attempting to redeem or reinvent themselves in some way. It isn't the terrible circumstances changing them; the quarantine is the catalyst to act on their desire to become the person they want to be, for better or worse. Lorentz wastes little time on establishing events from the previous book and plunges forward into the second week of detention. Crises and the mundane are handled with similar earnestness, although the action becomes monotonous once the author sets the narrative's rhythm: daytime scheming leads to nighttime partying. Scary stuff!!

Plague, trapped in a mall, riots.......what more could you ask for in a exciting story?? This is book 2 in the series and well worth the read. Can you imagine not being able to contact anyone you care about outside the mall? Being herded around like cattle to the slaughter? Scary stuff to say the least.

No Easy Way Out is not a sequel to No Safety In Numbers. It is a continuation and escalation of the fear and chaos from book #1. No Easy Way Out picks up just two hours after No Safety In Numbers ended. It appears that the thousands of shoppers quarantined inside the giant mall have calmed down and are cooperating with the new rules and new rules enforcers. Appearances can be deceiving. The trouble makers and rebels have found ways to stay out of sight and are content to operate in secret. Things might have gone on uneventfully, but Marco and Lexi uncover some dire secrets and make the mistake of telling others. Paranoia and vengeance take over and violence erupts. Readers need to be prepared for bloody fights, senseless killing and characters who started out as good guys turning into monsters. Oh, and the virus is still killing people, too. No Easy Way Out is compelling and terrifying. Readers can understand how the mall detainees feel abandoned and abused. They, and the reader, know that the government may have no intention of saving them. Book 3 will end the story, but readers will remember this series for a long, long time.

Like the cars that American motors built, solid reference information concerning AMC's products is getting scare. The Standard Catalog of American Motors is a good, but not great, addition to the American Motors enthusiast's library given the occasional gaff in the text. But, all things considered, a good value for the price.

Great reference book for the Last Independent automaker..

This is an excellent book, which ties together the entire history of the car from the early Jeffery thru Nash, and with the merger of Nash and Hudson, into the last form of independent automaking until it's death in 1987 ( although some '88 models were sold ).
Many technical sections, covering models and options, history and photos, experimental models. While not 100% accurate, there are some bloopers, it is about as close to fully documenting AMC's history as has been done nowhere else. A fine addition to anyone's home library.

Good, but many errors

This would be a great foundation text for anyone interested in learning the arts of French patisserie. But this edition has misplaced ingredients and incorrect yields. Not that what you produce is bad, no, but you must follow each procedure and method, and read the entire formula before proceeding. I don't recommend this for inexperienced bakers, at least until the editors correct the errors.

About the Author

Larry Goldstein has received several distinguished teaching awards, given more than fifty Conference and Colloquium talks & addresses, and written more than fifty books in math and computer programming.  He received his PhD at Princeton and his BA and MA at the University of Pennsylvania. He also teaches part time at Drexel University.

 

David Schneider, who is known widely for his tutorial software, holds a BA degree from Oberlin College and a PhD from MIT.  He is currently an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland. He has authored eight widely used math texts, fourteen highly acclaimed computer books, and three widely used mathematics software packages. He has also produced instructional videotapes at both the University of Maryland and the BBC.

 

Martha Siegel holds a BA from Russell Sage College, attended Rensselear Polytechnic Institute as a special student, and received her PhD at the University of Rochester. From 1966 until 1971 she taught at Goucher University in Baltimore. Since 1971 she has been a professor at Towson State University, also in Maryland. Professor Siegel has been on the writing team of this book since the fifth edition and is also the co-author of a precalculus reform book.

Decent textbook

What I like about this textbook is that the chapter questions actually seem to correspond with what was written in the book.I should note I'm a little biased since I've taken other math classes recently, so the information is still fresh in my head. Also, our professor only covered about 6 of the 12 chapters in the book, so some material might be a bit harder.
If you haven't taken math in a long time, it might be difficult to wrap your head around some of the material, but not impossible. And there are worse math textbooks out there.
The price is ridiculous, buy it at the end of the semester so you can get a good deal on a used one.

Piece of garbage

I hate this book so much. First, you can find a lot of these problems online. Second, the book does a horrible job of explaining how to answer problems. 90% of the problems in the book are unsolvable with the help from the explanations. The only thing this book has is problems for you to solve and no explanation on how to do them. This thing has caused me so much pain. Will burn again.

Although animation has finally begun to be thought worthy of serious attention, the spate of books on it in recent years has focused primarily on commercial Hollywood animation. Bendazzi ambitiously attempts to fill the gap. He covers more than a century's worth of animation, from the 1888 th{‚}e{ƒ}atre optique (a device for projecting moving painted images that predates motion picture pioneers Edison and Lumi{Š}ere) to today's cutting edge computer-animation technology. He covers American animation, of course, but also describes developments in more than 70 other countries, in many of which animation emerged more as an art form than a box office draw. His work is not without shortcomings: the writing (the translation, anyway) is occasionally awkward, and despite or because of its exhaustive depth and scholarly approach, the text seldom conveys the delightfulness that makes the best cartoons so compelling. Carping aside, this valuable effort, already well received in France and Italy, promises to be the basic reference on its subject for some time to come. Gordon Flagg

Great Documentation of Artistic Animation. Not your average animation history book.

It's clear that the author derives the majority of his references from Europe's history of Animation, which might explain why many people have not heard of the animators he talks about. But considering that these artists did take part in the history behind animation, it is good that Bendazzi made the effort to bring their names to light. He makes some remarks and does look at other countries, such as America's infamous Walt Disney and Japan's rising anime films, but for the most part, he concentrates on the growth within Europe's artistic groups.

This book is less about the big names in cinematic animation and more about the independent artists and studios who worked in animation during a time when the animator's names and the dates their works were created weren't exactly recorded and copyrighted properly. Many of the animators here can also be identified as fine artists, often working experimentally within the media. This is how animation as cinema started (way before the time of Walt Disney and his overshadowing fame) and is continuing to be produced on the other side of Hollywood.

This book definitely has a text-book feel, but as far as a text book goes, it's not too terribly dry. It's informative and gives a very in-depth look at animation, from its beginning as optical illusions to the cinematic phenomena it has become today.

Also, as a final personal comment, this book is like a documentation of the independent films (as well as mainstream films) of the animation industry. Most people will not have seen them (unless they have access to an animation/video library), but that doesn't mean the films aren't important to history.

Better with some revisions.

As a brazilian animator I tried to start to read this book by the Latin american section, and comprehensively, by the one that shows the status of animation in my country, Brazil, a reality that I know very well.I don't know where Mr. Bendazzi got his informations for this part of the book.What I know is that it's full of strange or, at least unknown names of people for most of the brazilian animators, illustrators figuring as animators, besides the absence of five or six of the really most important animators in my country.Because of all that,I'm affraid the rest of the book, at least in those sections telling about the animation in Latin America still needs to be revised.

A excellent resource

I love and I am actually studying animation, and this book is excellent and very interesting, not only for us the animators, but for everyone who likes history. My mother was an professor of History, tells me how interesting is this book every time she takes a look. The book has a enormous resource about the animation, since the first toys that made animation in our eyes while moving it, until actual animation. I admire all those who made animation, because for a short or long animation, of whichever method, we need to be crazy enough to be able to make one! I recommend it to everyone, this book is not only made for studying, it is also entertaining, until the point that I want to carry it everywhere I go and take a little read each time.
